Ultimate Hose Job and Matt Hamill

Watched the fight from London the other night featuring the Brit Michael Bisping and Matt Hamill, the Loveland guy who made his mark as a world-class wrestler. It was a joke.

If mixed martial arts intends to go mainstream -- if its goal is to broaden its fan base beyond testosterone-fueled, quasi-adolescents and the 18-35 male demographic -- it needs to judge its bouts with a whole lot more credibility than it judged this one.

Three rounds, 5 mins apiece... Hamill dominated Round 1, won Round 2 and broke even in Round 3... yet the three wise guys judging the farce saw it as a split decision in favor of the local, Bisping. No wonder... Hamill comes into the arena to a chorus of "Born in The USA'' and boos from the crowd... Bisping is cheered so loudly, my TV shook. When it was over, the fans cheered Hamill, partly because they knew the result was idiotic and felt sorry for him. Hamill, to his credit, handled it well, saying Bisping "won fair and square.''

Uh, not exactly.

I wasnt a huge MMA fan going in, but because I know Matt, I had a rooting interest. After the decision, I'm still a fan of Matt. The "sport'' remains on the outside, looking in.

PD-I'll be your seeing eye-dog for Ultimate Fighting...

Anyway, Hamill did win the fight--you are correct, he got screwed. Unfortunately, he didn't help himself by allowing Piss-bing to stay in it by staying on his feet so much. Known for his wrestling, Matt felt pressure to show he's learned how to trade standing up, and, well, he hasn't. He should have stayed with what he knows and knows thoroughly, grappling. Also, his condition surprisinly seemed to fade.

Anytime you're fighting more than just your opponent (like a home crowd that wuss-judges feel they've got to please) you have to leave no room for doubt. Matt should have taken him down, and instead of the ground and pound he attempted but wasn't real successful at, he should have looked for some choke-outs. People tap out when they can't breathe, and Matt didn't attempt a single rear-naked choke. A couple slams would have added needed exclamation points, too, but Matt was happy with simple leg-attack takedowns. I was puzzled at the outcome, but moreso by Matt's gameplan.

Matt Hamill did an outstanding job in his fight against Mike Bisping. He was the attacker in every round. The criteria for scoring points are effective striking, takedowns, grappling, aggression and octagon control. Matt Hamill won in all those catergories. Hands down Matt beat Bisping every round.

Hey Paul, a piece of advice: no one gives a damn about ultimate fighting.

Also, Marvin gave a great quote tonight:
"Consistently we need to be more consistent."

Nice insight Marvin.

Hey, Aaron: 11,000 no ones bought tickets to an event in October at USBank Arena, on the first day they were on sale.

I read a blog (www.elizybarra.blogspot.com/)which seems to agree with you. In her blog she seems to think it was the hometown favorite who won not the best fighter.

Hey Aaron, Isn't "consistently consistent" better than plain old "consistent"? But your point is well taken - Marvin is so guarded in what he says, that he rarely says anything worth listening to.
I'd like to see the Reds keep Pete Mc just because he's fun to listen to and usually talks to the points of interest or concern - plus I'm not hopeful anyone else can do better with the players the Reds have.
Sorry to get of-topic, PD.
