Willie and The Dunner

Just spoke with Bill Cunningham... he apologized this morning personally to ADunn, for saying on the air last Friday that Dunn was drunk during the previous night's game in Pittsburgh... Cunningham seemed truly contrite, said in 24 years of radio, he'd never before apologized to a Reds player for anything he'd said on the air. Dunn was not impressed. "Pathetic. You'll be hearing from me,'' was Dunn's response, according to Cunningham.

A few things: You can't say someone is drunk, not on the air, unless you know it's true. You can say he "looked'' like he was drunk or "played'' like he was drunk, not that he was drunk. It was good that Cunningham had the integrity to apologize in person; it was reckless that he said what he said. Talk radio allows a lot more leeway when it comes to passing harsh judgment on public figures. But there is a line.

I talked this morning with Enquirer attorney Jack Greiner, who said Cunningham's words probably were not slanderous. The irony is, the more hyperbolic the rhetoric, the better the slander defense. The theory is, if you make the words ridiculous enough, everyone listening will know you're not serious. So, if you're on the radio and you feel like assassinating someone's character, go overboard with it and you won't get anything but a fat lip from the assassinated.

I'm having Cunningham on Sports Talk tonight at 630, 700 WLW... we'll talk more about it.

Its a shame it takes someone of Dunn's prominence to get an apology from Willie. Every other unfortunate who was ever caught in his maelstrom of human verbal waste, but lacked Adam's profile will have to take Cunningham's apology vicariously. - Pat W.

Giving Cunningham one more platform to mouth his idiocy isn't helping any one PD. This guy needs to be banished - or worse, ignored.

Dunn is a cry baby. Apparently his mom over reacts to everything and he takes after her, no surprise.

Nice to see the ENQUIRER lead columnis helping out WLW's biggest loud mouth CREATE news. You are a sellout.

Hey, 130... nope, just following up on what was a front-page sports story this AM...thanks for caring.

I hope Dunn sues the hell out of Cunningham. He probably has a case, even though he's a public figure, since clearly Cunningham knew or should have known that what he said wasn't true and he arguably did it with the intent to impugn Dunn's character. Damages might be small, but he could win.

Cunningham is a pitiful blowhard with a weird voice.

I'd rather you play dead air than have him on your show, Doc, which I love.

Please reconsider.

We already know what he's going to say, anyway: it was a joke; it was just sarcasm and humorous exaggeration; no one could actually believe he was serious; he's sorry if he crossed the line; he's already apologized to Dunn personally; he'll learn from it and be more careful in the future (right...); etc., etc.

Paul, do you not think that Willie apologizing had anything to do with the fact that it kept the story in the news? From what I have read he didn't just make the remark in passing, but said it many times. In other words, he knew what he was doing. It worked by the way.

at 3:08 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's not the first time Cunningham has crossed the line nor will it be his last.

He can be entertaining but he can also look/sound like a buffoon such as when he appears on Hannity & Colmes.

The worst part of this is that there are people in this city who not only LISTEN to Cunningham, but actually take the jacka$$ SERIOUSLY!!! And people wonder why I'm so cynical toward Cincinnati...

Do you suppose Willie being contrite has anything to do with the fact that he is just about to launch a syndicated show on 325 stations, and he is concerned that his comments towards Dunn are far more inflammatory than the comments that got Andy Furman fired?

at 3:20 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

couple points to bring up to Willie tonight, if you so choose...

he crucified and made fun of a KID in high school after the kid missed a field goal that would have beaten your beloved Elder Panthers a few years back...he said he choked in his moment to advance into manhood (or something like that...

he said that he hoped the obviously mentally sick mother who shot her kids and then herself was "burning in the pit of hell" the day before her packed funeral at St. Dominic in Delhi...her family members were mourning 3 deaths, not just two...

...he talks about how Sheri Paollello...the good looking anchor on Channel 5 would be "pregnant all the time..." if she were his wife...

...and now this

I got one question...Does he have bodyguards? He should.

I agree with 1:30 -- guys like Cunningham think they're sports stories -- they're not. If the Enquirer wants to follow up on it, put it in the media section. Sports are the province of athletic performance, not media misconduct.

at 4:56 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

If Cunningham had integrity, he'd have never made the comment.

He said he was sorry because he was told to.

at 5:04 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dunn and his moms reaction were irrelevant side issues . The real issue is Cunninghams "drunk" comment . Someone with a decent level of intelligence may know Cunningham was kidding but unfortunately most of their listeners have such a low level of intelligence that they take him seriously.

You guys in Cincinnati get what you deserve. Obviously, Bill Cunningham attracts a large audience to hear him spew hatred toward those who are different from those of you who listen.
In this case it just happens to be a white guy from Texas who plays for the Reds. That's why it gets headlines.
Born and raised in Cincinnati (white Western Hills), I grew up with these same attitudes. Thank God I moved away and learned how to treat others with respect, not disdain.
Cincinnatians including my own family) never change. You simply have to rip other people to you can feel important. That's what makes Bill Cunningham popular.
Is Adam Dunn a lousy outfielder? Yes. Why put he and his mother down personally? Only you can answer that question.

Willie might have bit off more than he can chew this time. Would anyone actually take his apology seriously? Not me. He owes Dunn's mother an apology also. From what I hear she must be one in a million. God Bless her!

at 6:00 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The ONLY reason Cunningham went to Dunn at GABP is because he was told to. The amount of cash that the Reds and sponsers shovel into the vault at CC/wlw is waaay too much for them to chance losing.

He absolutely does not owe his mother anything. Its not his fault she breaks down anytime someone mentions her sons name. This is between Dunn and Cunningham.

Dunn needs to apologize to her for bringing her reaction up in public if anything.

What a joke of a country this has become.

When will Castellini be apologizing to the fans for the horrible club he and his GM have assembled? Cunningham is a joke, but the 07 Reds are a disaster and the team is likely to remain in that state for a while.

at 7:35 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

eh...Cunningham makes his living keeping people tuned in to WLW in the afternoon. Never forget that. Out of line? No question, but this really isn't something to get all bent out of shape about unless your name is Adam Dunn.

That said...

Let's talk about baseball. Probably the worst thing about this is that it increases the likelihood Dunn will bolt after next year - assuming the Reds exercise his '08 option - which, sorry Doc, would be foolish.

KEEP ADAM DUNN!

Bill Cunningham well represents that insular element in Cincinnati. It can be a great town, but heavy conservative immigration in the 19th. century still shows through with the nastiness that is evident in Cunningham's comment.

at 10:07 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Its funny, 17 people commenting and not one person actually listened to the show from Friday, which is available free on Itunes.

It was not slander, it was a joke and hyperbole on how bad Dunn played. Not to mention the fact that Dunn made similar comments towards Marty, Thom, and Jeff Brantley earlier in the year that his mom gets upset when someone criticizes her special baby.

That said there was something much more damaging said in the hyperbole that was much worse than the he was probably drunk.

Also I find it funny that people who don't like what someone says or are offended want to have them lose their job or keep them from presenting their side of the story, all in the name of free speech and anonymity. All the anon postings here are hypocrites.

Just a wonderful sign of the times with both radio and TV news. Fox News, MSNBC, CNN and the rest have turned news into a series of two to four yelling heads spewing opinions and "facts" instead of real news and (w/o quotes) facts. AM/FM and Satellite radio have so much time to fill, so instead of dead air, they grasp for straws and hope a story sticks. In what, a month or so, will anyone remember this story?
People that visit from outside Cincinnati have commented to me that they wonder how an AM station has such a grip on a city. Yes, it does happen to be the most powerful station in the US (world, maybe...I've listened to Reds games at night while driving towards Ottawa, Ontario) and turned radio hosts that spew this kind of garbage into local heros.

Personally, Adam Dunn is on my top-10 list of people I would not like to meet in an alley to settle a bar fight. I'd also hope that Willie would start noticing the quality of his establishments rather than yakking up garbage.

I think Mr. Dunn has a better chance of winning a gold glove than he has of winning a lawsuit against Willie!

Hey Monclova Steve ! Check the mirror, baby, for a glimpse of small-minded bigotry in the flesh.
Now take your stereotypes and cliche about "white Western Hills" and go away.

And take Cunningham with you !

Of course he apologized, he found out that he pissed off a guy that is 6'6" and goes 270 pounds. Even if Adam is laid back, when his Mom called him, I'm sure he got quite upset. Guys like Cunningham are all talk and verbal bullies, right up until someone stands up to them.

at 7:45 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kevin 12:44 said it first... You really are walking a slippery slope giving this guy another forum to spout off. What will be your defense if he sticks his foot in his mouth on air: I didn't know he would do that? C'mon. Is it your job to report sports news or create it? You mention following up on the 'front page sports story', that sounds like a cop out. You have a choice, both for your columns and for your radio show, on what is relavent in the sporting landscape and what you'll address. This story is not relavent. Either it was decided for you to keep the ball rolling on this, or you decided yourself. Pretty silly decision either way.

at 11:40 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Paul- love your columns and like your radio show but I lost some respect for you last night. You would have been better off not having Cunningham on if you couldn't ask him the tough questions like, "why should you keep your job when Andy Furman lost his for a lesser transgression?Unless you were compromised worrying what Daaaaaaaaaaryl Paaaaaaaaaarks would have done relative to your own employment.

It's time for Cunningham, and the rest of the WLW scumbags to leave what was once a good station. These purveyors of hate and lies should be banished to a 1000 watt station in Egypt. I have respected Daughtery for many years. I cannot understand why he sides with this scumbag.

To 1:34 Anon,
Thanks for the reply. I must have hit a nerve with you.
Thanks also for making my point about a lot of Cincinnatians. Anyone with a different viewpoint just needs to (in your view)"move away"!
I appreciate the lesson on bigotry.

Hey, 301: I wasnt aware I supported Bill... as for the Furman tie-in, it wasnt especially relevant to the subject at hand.

Hey Steve,
Thanks for proving again the cliche about "stereotyping" those who disagree with you. You and Cunningham seem to be intellectual soulmates: I find his schtick annoying and his politics repulsive.

By the way, I said "go away", as in leave the room.
You have already chosen to leave Cincinnati. I have chosen to live work, play, raise my family, and help grow a tolerant open-minded generation of Cincinnatians, welcome to everyone.

Hate is not welcome in my incus

I thought this was a sports blog?

Hey Doc, you think there's any chance they'll eat Stanton's salary next year? 3 million bucks is a lot of money but I can't see how they could justify letting him take up a spot on the roster after the way this year has gone.

at 9:40 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The whole issue here is people hate Willie, and this is the only thing they can hold on to. Get over it you cry babies if you dont like Willie turn off the radio. All I am hearing is people that have some vendetta against Willie. For as many of you seem to hate him you all sure seem to know an awful lot about him. I know if I hate someone that much I dont listen.

Grow up and stop being little children.

at 1:04 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey Monclova Steve
If you hate Cincinnati so much and "thank God you moved away" then why do you not only read, but post comments on a Cincinnati blog about Cincinnati topics. How sad is your life.

Paul,

Just curious did you get a chance to check out UC last night? What were your thoughts?

1:42 Anon,
I must not express myself too well. I totally AGREE with everything you've said -- especially about what you're doing to help create a more tolerant Cincinnati.
As far as Bill Cunningham is concerned, I HATE his schtick as well as his politics.
Cincinnati is a great town, and I miss a lot of things about it. I visit several times a year.
Keep up what you're doing.

PD = Arrogant

Dunn = Cry Baby

Kevin I don't like what you say so I banish you to the cornfields. Freedom of speech baby!!

Paul,

Did Seg and Willie really get into a fight, or was that just a stunt?

I mentioned the same thing to Lance yesterday.. yet amazingly the always straight and narrow, well thought out McCallister felt it was a "big fuss" that should be over with. Anyone notice the common thread (Clear Channel paychecks *cough*)?

Transparent garbage that a legitimate media member would have no issue calling out (see Rosencrans).

at 9:25 PM Blogger ewad said...

Paul,

Since I live in Georgia now the paperboy didn't make it to the house.
The online version didn't have anything from you so I was honestly asking what your thoughts were.

at 9:47 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

You think Trent is a legitimate media member?

The guy writes a blog of play by play and awful articles. If hes a good example of "legitimate" media then Cincy media is a lot more trouble than people say.

at 9:52 AM Blogger liz said...

Isn't it amazing that the "fight" between Cunningham and Dennision would take place right after the Dunn incident? Could it be just a gimmick to take the talk off the real issue. Isn't it time for Willie to take a vacation anyway?

at 3:48 PM Blogger Paul Daugherty said...

ewad... you didnt get the colum online? what a shocker... anyway, i was thoroughly impressed with the defense: fast, aggressive, angry... offense isnt there yet... but very hard to find anything wrong with that butt-whipping of the erstwhile 31st-ranked team in the country.. either UC is a lot better than most believed, or early season polls are as stupid as i've always believed them to be
