The Reds and B. Phillips

I said this Thursday night on Extra Innings on WLW, but it bears repeating: If the Reds marketers don't take BP and turn him into an ad campaign, they're nuts.

Young player. Very good, chance to be great player. Exciting, passionate, fan friendly. Many, many people have mentioned BP when I ask them who treats them the best... signs as many autographs as anyone.

Joy to watch... if only everyone played with his passion.
Great smile, great hip-hop edge to him..
Etc...

The Reds do a great job marketing their past. Their future? Not so much. And how many heads can there possibly be left to bobble?

They've made GABP a more fun place to be, though I swear, the times I go as a fan, there's still something missing. Oh, yeah, winning. Lots of nice bars, though.

Anyway, time to sell the players. Sell the product, not the entertainment. If, that is, you believe in the product. It starts with BP.

Couldn't agree more, Doc. BP has a great chance to go 30-30 this season. He's easily the most fun player on the team to watch. He called himself "The Franchise" when he was with the Indians. Becoming more and more true now that he's a Red.

Here in the Charlotte area it's pretty much Braves' country. I ran infield drills on skills day for fall ball this past Saturday, and the lone Cincinnati jersey in the bunch sported a #4 home jersey. You might be on to something.

Couldn't agree with you more Paul.

I also believe that the Reds can do so much more with BP. I've been saying all year that the Reds need leadership. They need to designate a team captain, someone to "round-up the troops" when times get rough. I think BP is the perfect fit for that position. He's played quality baseball since he's been in the bigs and on top of that, he plays balls to the wall every game. His hustle has garnered him respect from the veterans and he is still young enough to relate to those that are new to the majors. He's a perfect fit for the Reds to use, not only for marketing purposes, but also to be the leader on the team.

Me and a group of buddies traveled to Shea in July to watch the Reds and Mets play. We met BP in the hotel lobby and he talked to us for about 10-15 minutes. Then asked us if we needed tickets for the game later that night. He ended up getting us 4 tickets for the game...
He would be perfect for an ad campaign.

Don't say that to C. Trent.

Paul,

Sell the players?? Winning??

The taxpayers paid 500,000,000+ to build two fancy stadiums for the Reds and Bengals. Why pay to win when you get decent attendance(Bengals sellouts + Reds not so bad) with taxpayer financed stadium + nice bars + cheerleader crew + t-shirts out of air guns + kiss cam + YMCA dance + Mr Red Races. Am I missing anything?

Only a foolish businessman would pay to win. Ask Brown, Lindner, Castellini.

After what he did last night, I think he's their clear MVP this year. Should get a Gold Glove and is a joy to watch. Glad to hear about people's interaction him off the field has been positive.

Why would you market to the future? There is no future until Major League Baseball addresses revenue sharing. Get real.

Thanks for pointing this out. The Reds need a leader, and BP is it. Build around him. Let's get some positive chemistry back to this team. But please, don't bat him cleanup. He needs to be in the #2 slot.

Agree with you completely, Paul. However, knowing this wonderful Reds organization, we will trade Phillips for 2 unknown minor leaguers, just as they have unceremoniously in the past traded Perez, let go of Pete in '79, dumped Larkin after 19 years of loyalty, failed to hire Oester or Griffey Sr. as managers, fired Doggie, etc., etc., etc. This organization continously shoots itself it the foot, but figures they can keep people around by trotting out the '75 team a couple times a year. Let's enjoy Phillips while we can, for sadly, he won't be long for Cincy.

My 8 year old son attended a celebrity baseball camp this summer. Both BP and Freel partcipated. They are two of the classiest, most genuine guys...autographed more items than you could count (BP signed my son's jersey, glove, and hat, my daughter's notebook, and my infant son's baseball...and that's just my own children...did the same for the other 75 kids, as well!), posed for oodles of pictures, talked to the kids. These guys even posed for pictures with younger siblings. I've got an excellent photo of BP holding my five year old daughter. By all means, the Reds need to acknowledge the amazing contributions by BP...he's a keeper.

Thanks Paul, I've been saying this for years, but disagree with that club's marketing is what is lacking. I think most of the problem is the players themselves. Let's face it professional sportsmen don't exactly have the best image in this town.

For the life of me I do not understand why players don't understand why projecting a good image off the field is as important to their future as on the field. Arnold Palmer hasn't won a major tournment in 40 plus years, yet he is still one of the highest paid athletes year in and year out. Will Barry Bonds be able to say that?

When I was a kid, every week we use to have the Reds and Bengals on Bob Braun or Paul Dixon shows. These programs served as a way to get the fans to know them as real people. The players don't have that outlet but they could still be active in the local communities around town. Wouldn't it be nice to have players realize that it is better to visit a school room than a court room?

You might be right about BP, he is great on the field and seems like a fine citizen off the field, but how can you critize a marketing team for being a little nervous about investing millions on a ad campaign where your "face of the organization" might show up on the nightly news wearing an orange jumpsuit rather than the team colors? Or fighting a paternity lawsuits because he is having his fourth child with four different women?

The Reds or the Bengals marketing team might be more aggressive in promoting their players if their players were more marketable!
