Odell and Homer

Thurman is why sports media are seen as cynical and "negative.'' I had Bob Holtzman from ESPN on WLW SportsTalk the other night, asking him why the Worldwide Leader continues to find fascination in Bemgals troubles that are mostly ancient. Then Odell goes and kicks and punches a few folks (allegedly) and I look dumb. Better to be negative than dumb. If Thurman doesnt want to help himself, no sense anyone else trying.

As for Homer: It's great and all, but someone explain to me how a guy who pitches 6 shutout innings in the big leagues Friday (Livingston) is sent out, while someone else who allows 4 runs in 6 innings in Triple A in his last start is promoted.

I'm not a Baseball Guy, but explain why J. Hamilton wasnt in Denver Sunday, spelling Griffey, who's hitting .191 with 3 rbi in his last 12 games... Hobbs hit 3 HRs in his 1st 2 games at 'Ville, yet not fit enough to fly on a plane nearly 2 weeks later?

Livingston sent down because he wouldnt start for 8 days... so, how come he couldnt pitch out of the 'pen? Reds replace him w/McBeth, relief pitcher, who spent 2 games on the pine in Colorado...

It's like the line from Forrest Gump: "I'm not a smart man, Jenny.'' I'm sure Kriv's "people'' had their reasons. I'm not bright enough to figure them out.

Paul, I know you're quite familiar with the Bengals lost decade of the 90s. Nearly ruined my childhood. I've argued that the Reds of this decade have gone about business in a startlingly similar fashion. Wondering if you were able to draw the same parallels.

To me, Narron IS Dick Lebeau. Jeff Conine as your major free agency haul reeks of Richmond Webb or Michael Westbrook. Many others....

Hey, 953... a little early to make that sad comparison. Hopefully, we won't have to.

I actually don't know that it's too early, Paul--2007 will make seven straight losing seasons and with Krivsky's apparent inability to identify competent pitching and willingness to throw money away on sub-mediocre players I think a Lost Reds Decade is an inevitability rather than a mere possibility.

Hey Doc...love the blog...but how is it a little early in 2007 to evaluate the Reds' decade? Seven years and so far no winning records since 2000 and a lot of bad baseball and no budget signings. Will 2008 or '09 be much different? Hope so.

It's the general attitude and tendencies of the organization. Sticking with the in-house commodities, giving big money to the wrong players, praising the players for merely competing when things are awful, telling fans they'll right the ship while doing very little to ensure we'll ever see the day. Bengals used to be the exact same way.

Maybe this is just a conservative Cincinnati approach to business. I know Mike Brown would never change his stripes until the fans just flat-out stopped showing up. I suspect Castellini and Krivsky will be faced with the same dilemma.

I totally agree with you Paul. This team needs a major overhaul and a call-up of the team's most coveted minor league prosepect isn't enough. Don't do it at the expense of a young pitcher coming off a good performance. There's plenty of has-been's that can't seem to justify why they're on a big league staff as it is. We're ready for the future, as we have been waiting for year's now to begin to see it. Bring them on!!!

Hey, Paul: Did you ask Holtzmann why ESPN seems only to be waiting on the Yankees to cure cancer? Talk about bias...this network has become completely unwatchable. If it doesn't happen east of the Hudson River, it must not be worth reporting. Sheesh.

Best way to get Castellini's attention would be to ignore the disaster that the current Reds organization is. Guess you are constrained by the relationship between the radio station for which you work and the Reds from moving on to other topics, but when the fans stay away in droves and stop buying the merchandise, the personnel changes that are necessary will occur.

I don't know Paul, sounding more and more like some of Odell's hanger on's - hanger on's might be taking their shot at the quick cash...Yet another reason though why he should be smart enough to stay away from those that would take advantage of his position in such a way...

THURMAN CHARGES A MONEY GRAB?

A league source tells us that the pool of persons who were allegedly roughed up over the weekend in Georgia by Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman has grown to four -- and that they are willing to drop all charges and put the matter behind them.

In exchange for a payment in the amount of $250,000. Each.

Per the source, the Thurman camp politely (or otherwise) declined. The quartet then threatened to take the thing to the media, to which the Thurman camp responded by providing the phone number to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Indeed, the charges already have hit the press. Thus, the threat to go public is, at this point, sort of meaningless.

I had heard a few rumors that those guys were trying to extort money from Thurman. He really needs to watch his step and not get baited into fights like that.

As for the Reds, I think they are still trying to clean up some of the messes from the previous management. Plus, they see to just simply have bad luck at times. Even though the NL Central is weak, this season is shot. I see no reason to bring up Homer other than a simple promo, which is ridiculous.
