Bowden rippers, give it a rest

It's hip to rip J.G.B. IV now... apparently, it's Bowden's fault the Reds are underachieving and have no decent players in their system over the age of 21....even though he hasnt been here in almost four years. A few things:

Jeff Brantley, Jeff Shaw, Pete Harnisch, Pete Schourek, Denny Neagle, John Smiley;

A few more:

Danny Graves, Ron Gant, Eric Davis, Kevin Mitchell, Scott Williamson, Scott Sullivan;

And:

Dave Burba, David Wells, Mark Portugal = 18 wins last nine weeks of '95 = division title... all acquired in 10-day span after all-star break.

Greg Vaughn.

Burba for Sean Casey.

Smiley for Graves... Smiley won -- count 'em -- two games the rest of his career after the deal. Graves is the Reds' all-time saves leader.

Felipe Lopez for Elmer Dessens. Edwin Encarnacion for Rob Bell. Who?

Not enough time to mention all the stats these gentleman accumulated for winning Reds clubs that Bowden put together. You could look it up.

What would the Reds record be now if their bullpen had the '07 versions of the '99 tandem of graves, williamson and sullivan? About 38-6.

If you don't like Bowden personally, fine. The grievance list is long: Tony, for starters. But to suggest Bowden was a lousy GM is idiotic. Fans and media scream for W. Krivsky to Do Something. Bowden did things, so cut the hypocrisy. Read an extended rant on this subject in Monday's Enquirer.

Live big, 5-Tool-Man. (OK, so Ruben Mateo and Willie Greene stunk.)

jb could make deals and knew the value of a good bullpen. Unfortunately, he didn't draft well and that is as important as the other things you named.

Doc,

Worst article you have ever written. There is exaclty 1 player (Dunn) on the roster that Jim Bowden drafted. For all the Adam Dunns and Austin Kearns he drafted, there are a dozen Chris Gulers, Ty Howingtons, Chad Mottolas, Dane Sardinias, etc. Any time the Reds had a decent prospect, Bowden tried to play Mr. Yankee and traded them away. When he left, the minors were a baren wasteland, and Reds fans are still suffering because of it.

Seriously, did you lose a bet or something that made you write that?

Nice column today, Doc. You are spot on. Bodes wasn't prefect, but for a long time, he kept the Reds viable. You forgot to mention Ryan Freel, who JGB picked up for nothing his final offseason here.

Yup, Brad, far better to watch a sub-.500 club while eagerly awaiting a future that never arrives... better, too, to trade 2 everyday players for two young pitchers who can't seem to get to Cincinnati... much, much better to have studs in the minor leagues (Bailey, Dumatrait) that management doesn't promote... the next time the current regime trades for a 50-homer guy (Vaughn)or acquires an 18-game winner (Schourek) or remains even remotely interesting after Labor Day, gimme a shout...

Paul,

I did not mean to infer that the current regime is much if any better. The point is that Bowden's ineptitude led to some of the problems of today.

Great article, Doc. When they fired Bowden, I said at the time it was a very bad move. He could wheel and deal with the best, and he never stood on a pat hand, if he thought he could improve the team.

Let's not forget Neon Deion, who led the league in stolen bases into late september, even though he went to football full time in late August. He made Dumm look like he was going backwards. And of course Marge, working for whom is a category all in intself. He managed that whole circus quite well. In fact in some strange way, they fed off that atmosphere.

Go Reds, go Narron, go Krivsky....somehwere else.....right to the bottom.

"But to suggest Bowden was a lousy GM is idiotic"

Yes, look at what a good job he is doing in DC. The only team in the NL worse than the Reds.

He is a stellar GM

We are talking about the job he did here which, until 2001, was very good. In MLB, you win or you win. Doesnt matter how. Bowden won with enough regularity to keep things somewhat interesting... too many small-revenue teams plan for futures that never arrive... I couldnt care less how good dayton is... or chattanooga... most of those "prospects'' won't see MLB without DirecTV... "Prospect'' is baseball-speak for "ain't done nothin' '' ... give me a proactive GM... and don't forget, the last 2 good mgrs Reds have had -- D. Johnson, J. McKeon -- were Bowden guys... (we won't talk about Boone and Knight) good discussion, keep it coming...

I don't get it. I don't really understand who is complaining about Bowden today, besides the fact that there's an argument he pushed damaged goods on us in the Majewski trade.

So, it's a non issue to me. Bowden is about as relevant as an ex girlfriend.

No one I have talked to has suggested that Bowden was a poor GM in the 1990s, and I haven't heard too many people place the blame of the '07 Reds on Bowden, so I'll start out by not accepting your premise. That aside, his horrible decisions/moves in his last three seasons helped lead the Reds to the mess they're in today. He drafted guys he called "five-tool players," but those guys only ever seemed to be able to use one with any consistency. Let's not forget Jeremy Sowers, whom Bowden drafted even though he knew he couldn't sign him in 2001 ... pure stupidity ... and Trevor Hoffman, whom he left unprotected in the 1992 expansion draft ... you say he valued a good bullpen ... wouldn't it have been nice to have Hoffman these past, oh, 15 seasons?
That's why most people bash Bowden (that and his personality) ... it has little to do with the body of work of his entire time with the Reds ... it has to do with the mess he left. There are lots of people to blame for the 2007 Reds, and to suggest Bowden is blameless, to borrow a phrase, would also be idiotic.

"Prospect'' is baseball-speak for "ain't done nothin' ''

That's fantastic, Doc.

I always thought Bowden was one of the "do more with less' guys." He took risks in order to keep us competitive, and made some great trades. Plus, when he fired tony, he was in his first year as GM, i think, and was all of 33?

Bottom line -- teams that are consistently not competitive don't get free passes and don't get to say "it's not the manager's (or GMs) fault the players don't hit." Bowden was consistently aggressive, and more often than not made good moves. Were still waiting for current regime to do that.

BTW, if the reds can get to 2010 -- only 3 1/2 more seasons --without making the playoffs, they will have officially matched the bengals ineptitude. Will that officially make this The Lost Decade II?

How many years did Bowden have at the helm? Plenty -- enough to assume that among his many, many moves several would have produced players of value.

More importantly -- what kind of ORGANIZATION did he build? Methinks he did more damage to the front office as a whole than he did building. Have you read the columns out of DC talking about all the front office defections there? Great job there, jimbo.

If you think Bowden was a good GM then you don't understand all that the job entails.

This FO has been on the job all of 15 months. Give them more time before you start denigrating their performance vs. Bowden's, because, as noted, Bowden's track record, as defined by you, was as much a product of lengevity as anything.

P.D. - thank you for articulating the case for Bowden that I have been making for years.

Bowded was a crummy guy, no doubt. But he was a good G.M. and his shrewd and aggressive moves kept this small market team afloat and competitive for the better part of a decade. I would take that Bowden over Krvisky any day.

What's the name of the game in baseball? Pitching or something like that? Who was the last starting pitcher that was worth anything that the Reds drafted? Tom Browning you say?

Dunn is the only thing Bowden has to show for. Kearns stinks. When you're the Reds, you have to compete by consistently drafting and developing young talent. The Indians, Braves, and Marlins don't seem to have any trouble.

Bowden could sign free agents, but at the cost of giving up what the organization really needed, it wasn't worth it. He has a couple good moves in 15 years, but he had far more failures.

FACT 1 Bowden didn't dismantle the farm system: Marge did. Remember her famous comments on the scouts? "Why pay guys who just sit around and watch games?" He fought to get her to invest; she continued to divest her money out of the farms and scouting.
FACT 2 Every other year Marge would pull her money back from Bowden and limit the budget (even years). The Reds would be bad, Marge would be embarassed, and she'd let Jim spend the next year (odd years) and the Reds would be great. Schizophrenic, and not that different from Steinbrenner.
FACT 3 Baseball is entertainment. The "Jim and Marge show" was high drama entertainment at its best. I enjoyed it thoroughly, I tuned in frequently, and the Reds were never dull to watch. Contrast this with the last few years, although last year's team pre the Kearns Lopez trade was fun to watch.
FACT 4 Krivsky went nuts trying to win in July and August last year. He made some pretty bad deals and wasted a lot of the boss's money. When did a two year deal for marginal players become the best way to build a better team? Krivsky has to do a better job than he has.

I think maybe O'Brien might be getting the worst rap. Take a look at our minor league system now...not too shabby is it? The team on the field was never especially good...but the next few years aren't looking bad.

I don't like Jim Bowden but I can't place too much of the blame for bad drafts on him. With ownership unwilling to pay the going rate to top draft picks, the Reds were picking 2nd and 3rd round guys in the first round and then giving them much better $$ then they would have gotten as a 2nd or 3rd rounder to sign quickly.

PD--
Why is Bowden referred to as "Leatherpants" by many?

at 7:26 AM Blogger Paul Daugherty said...

Because he wore leather pants. Maybe still does.

at 11:56 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nobody could have foreseen Hoffman converting to a pitcher and becoming one of the top closers. The Marlins cut him also.

JimBo lousy GM and lousy person. Reds/Nats his sorry legacies
