Me, the Reds homer
Normally, I don't respond to questions of my integrity in a forum such as this, but today is an exception. Fellow Enquirer reporter John Kiesewetter suggested recently in his blog that I'm "soft'' on the Reds. That's an absolute first in my 19 years in town, someone suggesting I'm a cheerleader. Anyway, Kiesewetter surmises that's the case because the team's radio deal w/Clear Channel is up after this year, so CC talkers have to make nice. A few things:
I didnt know the deal was up after this year.
No one has told me what to say on the radio. Or even suggested it.
The specific instance Kiesewetter pointed to was a segment on-air last week, when I read a list of Reds promotions for the rest of the season. The intent was not to boost interest or attendance. It was to poke fun of the product on the field. I mean, "Build A Bear Night''?
It's called "sarcasm'', John. Look it up.
Trust me. A very good reason for keeping my "day'' job at the newspaper is, I can do the show the way I want. Integrity is all I have. I ain't about to give it up. Both the paper and the radio station have been extremely supportive.
Hope that clears things up.

Doc...relax.
I just read Kiesewetter's blog entry. He is being provocative to elicit some discussion. He simply asks the question and tries to gin up some interest. He's not "attacking your integrity" or calling you a homer.
Maybe the 2 jobs have you a little stressed out. Chill my friend.
I appreciate the response Doc.
Geez. First, C.T. Rosencrans is crying on his blog about all the mean people there and threatening to quit it. Now this? What's with all the sensitivity in the Cincy sports writers these days?
The Marquis Hill story is just one more sad reminder... sports players aren't immortal.
Inter-workplace combat can be fun, but can also cause more stress than it's worth. Kiesewetter's response should be interesting. Bravo to you for defending your comments and rationalizing how you go about your work. I just hope your readers give you the benefit of the doubt that has been placed behind your comments.
i admit i had the same type of thoughts around the start of sportstalk... but the recent blog entries/articles have had the same edge. i'd advise against whining about it on your blog, though.
Your colleague Kiesewetter is inept at best. Ignore him.
I have to go with the "we luv ya, Doc, but chill" corner.
I don't think Kies was slamming you for being soft on the Reds. He merely put together some comments to stir the pot.
He even offered an out by closing his statements with: "Or are CC sports hosts just bored and tired talking day after day about how to fix a bad team?"
Didn't Kornheiser freak out when one of his colleagues criticized his MNF performance?
I listened to your show that night on the way home from the game, and I distinctly recall you mentioning up front how at this point, you were going to approach the Reds season with a sense of humor (much as you've demonstrated in your columns of late), so if John (or anyone else, for that matter) took your reading the promotional schedule on the air seriously, then they clearly weren't listening, and simply "don't get it."
On the night of your reading that promotional schedule on the radio, I distinctly recall you stating up front that you were taking more of a tongue-in-cheek approach given the sorry state of the Reds season (something that has been clearly reflected in your recent columns), because it was better to maintain your sense of humor. I think anyone who took your reading seriously either didn't listen to the show, or simply "don't get it".
Yea? They once claimed Blackie was a homer...and the rest of the city laughed also.
Get a life, Doc, and leave Kies alone, please. He has a job to do just like you. Don't be so sensitive!
from the neighborhood
Me and the Boys at the establishment have been talking and think Kiesewetter is just left wing whack-job with an axe to grind.
Keep doing what you are doing Doc. You are just fine.
"Normally, I don't respond to questions of my integrity in a forum such as this, but today is an exception." Must have been something too it. And Doc, you were an apologist that day.
Whit and sarcasm at the reason i read your insight... dont entertain those who intend ill will... they'll make you sick
Didn't know John Kiesewette still worked there.
