Volquez, IKEA and the US Mail

Very likely Volquez starts the year in the bullpen. Somewhat likely Cueto begins it in Louisville. Is either ready for the Reds rotation? Nope. Should it matter? Nope.

Was Jeremy Bonderman ready a few years ago in Detroit? Hardly. Was he ready a couple years later, when the Tigers made the World Series? Absolutely. By deciding not to deal kids for vets, the Reds have cast their lot with the future. Why not get it started? Put Cueto and Volquez in the rotation and leave them there. Is that any worse than winning 80 games with (pick two) Fogg, Belisle and Affeldt?

why are people camping out at a big-box store that sells dorm room furniture? It's not as if IKEA won't be open, you know, all the time beginning Wednesday. This isn't Opening Day or a Springsteen concert in 1985. It's not even Xbox 360. Supply is fairly unlimited.

Because I'm famously cheap, I drink Keystone Light (30 for $11.99) and, now, I'm mailing things to the Enquirer that I used to drive downtown to deliver. Think about it: I live 25 miles from 312 Elm. That's a gallon. Round trip is about $7. I just dropped something in the mail for $1.25. Not only that, I'm doing my little bit to save the planet.

Which prompts a question: You do anything different like that, now that a gallon of gas costs as much as a sixer of Milwaukee's Best?

I'll take your bet on Cueto.

I think he starts the season in the Reds rotation with Belisle and Fogg rounding out the 3-5 slots.

First time poster, but enjoy reading the blog.

I hope you are wrong about Cueto. It appears that he is ready to at least be a 5th starter. Can't do any worse than the guys they had there last year. I also hope that if they do let him try they don't give him a short leash and send him down after one rough outing. It doesn't seem like they give some of these guys much of an audition.

I certainly think about combining trips to save gas. Looking for a carpool too. If you really want to look for a cheap alternative for you deliveries, isn't it possible to email the document? Then it costs you zero.

I think the IKEA people are camping out for the fabulous prizes that are available to the first few through the door. What's funny is that it appears that the door prize is a $100.00 chair. This almost makes the people who camp out for black friday seem sane.

Why do we get so bent out of shape about gas prices?

Sure, I bargain shop for the lowest priced pump, but the price of most commodities, milk, bread etc., have risen at a much greater percentage rate than gas.

Perhaps we'd notice that if milk prices were displayed on a large billboard outside the grocery store, or if the price was calculated by the fluid ounce every time we poured.

I would like to know how gas prices are truly calculated. I mean, how can the cost change twice in a day!?! Oops, there I go paying attention to those signs again.

Doc, I'm in college and I can't even stomach the $2 pitchers of Keystone on Thursday nights. If you're going to go cheap, you gotta go w/ Natty Light. Not much different than Bud Light in my opinion.

As far as the Reds lineup this year, you are dead on, there is no chance the Reds do the right thing and play the young guys. If Krivskockkety sees the light and decides to go young, is there any chance we can trade Fogg for some prospects? Somebody has to be interested in a 5th starter for $1mil, right?

Bailey is obviously not ready, however I don't understand the logic of not having Cueto and Volquez in the rotation.

If tomorrow were opening day the rotation should be:
Harang
Cueto
Arroyo
Volquez
When do the Reds even need a fifth starter for the first time? I know there are usually several off days early in the season. I am too lazy to look it up. Belisle, Fogg and Afeldt compete for the fifth spot. Bailey starts the season in Louisville and hopefully is ready when the fifth spot is needed on a regular basis or Arroyo pitches like he has for the past season and a half.

Based on what he's done so far, if Cueto is not in the rotation on Opening Day I will be very disappointed.

I live about 2 miles from where I work, I've decided that once it warms up to, say, above 40 that I'll make the 29 minute walk rather than drive. It may not be much, but it's a start.

You should try Miller High Life Light. It's not much more than Keystone Light for a 30 pack and I think it tastes good. I buy it because of the taste, not the price.

Keystone Light? Pick up the PBR, it's a buck cheaper for the 30 pack, and is a much better beer. As for the Reds? Who knows what they are thinking, but with some more PBR, we can make it through the summer either way.

Yep, I buy only a half a tank at a time. That way if it drops or if I see it much cheaper someplace else, then I finish the job. It also makes me think before I go someplace.

The Natty Light is a far superior cheap beer to the Stones...but, that's probably since Coors is my least favorite beer, outside of Iron City Light.

You can pick it up in Indiana for $9.99 a case, whereas the same exact beer in a Bud Light can costs you $16.49.

pbr -- king of the cheap beers

There are lots of things to cheap out on--get Kroger brand or Giant Eagle brand stuff because there isn't really much difference. But beer? Never. That's where I draw the line.

...lifes too short to drink cheap beer ... and a beer that is not brewed well at that...

Mmmmmm, Beast. It's definitely better than Keystone.

Keystone's 30 has gone up to $13 something recently at my grocery and neighborhood UDF. Still worth it.
Plus, I like Keystone for a heck of a lot more than price. Yes, my Irish friends make fun of me. Actually, most of my friends but their commercials are correct: it's never bitter. Plus, I can drink a few and still carry on a conversation and without a headache the next day.

Paul, Paul Paul,

Couldn't agree with you more. Let's start the young guys now. Its the only way we'll ge closer to really winning, seeing as how the mgmt. has made it clear they wont spend their way to a pennant.

BTW: Keystone Light? Reminds me of standing outside convient Food Mart in High School hoping someone would throw me a bone. I know times are tough but there's no excuse for drinking cheap beer. Or "jack daniel's country coctails", etc. Suck it up and go get a sixer of Newcastle or something with flavor. And don't tell me you like the taste of over-carbonated stale water. But hey, now we know what to get you for a gift......;)

Light beer is the pelican piss that nobody wanted to drink 30 years ago. Give me an ice cold Miller High Life or a can of Coors Banquet Beer anytime. On second thought make that a case.

Keystone rocks. When I'm out, I slum it with a pint of Guinness.

Doc,

To take advantage of living in the city and rising gas prices,
I purchased a scooter last year and love it for my <1 mile commute to work. For the rainy days I jump in my 1975 Mercedes Benz 240D.

Cheers,
Drew

I'm no longer the only person letting Doc have it over the bad beer, but you've redeemed yourself to me, Paul: it doesn't get a whole lot better than a pint of Guinness in an East Side dive.

Ditto on IKEA. And ditto on Cueto, Volquez and Bailey for that matter. The team didn't make a move for frontline starting pitching so it makes no sense to not pitch them because (sorry everyone) unless the Fates align in the most amazing fashion, this team isn't going to compete for the division this year. Let the young'ns play.

And come on, C. Trent, I expected better out of you.

I switch to cans for the summer. Probably need to make the switch earlier this year. Harder and harder after drinking the longnecks all winter. I dont go lower than the 18 pk of Miller Lite. Keystone? Geez, why not Little Kings or Weidemann if your gonna go that low.

Alright Paul, Im ignoring the other stuff and heading straight to beer discourse. I love your frequent refereneces to the Reds on radio, can of beer perspiring in one hand. Which raises the question....with baseball/summer on the way.....whats the average number of beers required to mow the yard, trim, listen to the reds, grill on the deck, piddle around and burn a long saturday. Im starting the discourse at 5.

The Beast...brings back memories from college.

I'll never forget the spring break that I took 5 cases of the Beast to Panama City.....and ran out a couple days before we left......good times.

Brad, I can't match that but >> gang drank case, drove to Paducah and played really good golf at 8 AM..

Oh, to be forever young!

Strohs (when you can get it) is a real bargain - IMO.

Can we agree then >> good cheap beer is the essence of existence?

Yes, we can.
