For XU fans only

What do you make of the loss last night? I see both sides of the coin, and when it comes to determining what this outcome -- and this performance -- meant to the rest of the season, you might as well flip it.

Hopeful, rationalizing side: Must win for St. Joe's, emotional night for the Hawks who were playing on Senior Night the last game at Memorial Hall for two years. Meantime, X has been grinding out conference wins for a month, had clinched the reg. season title, tough to win anywhere on the road, shouldnt hurt Madness seeding etc. etc.... all good explanations.

Or...

Concerned, stay away from sharp instruments side: The team of January is a shell in March. Might have peaked too soon. An ordinary D. Lavender equals an ordinary X team. Healthy Drew made the game easier for his mates. Gimpy Drew didnt penetrate once last night, that I recall. His contribution was limited to bringing the ball across halfcourt and giving it to S. Burrell.

What to do about Drew?

Nothing, now. It's too late to rest him, if you want him sharp in 13 days, when all are convinced X will open its tournament run in D.C. Xavier should have sat him as soon as he hurt the ankle, for as long as it took to get him right. Now, there are rumors that his Achilles is a bigger problem than the ankle.

It's an easy second guess, but just because it's easy doesnt mean it's false.

It's also a shame, because this is arguably Xavier's best team. If not, it's in the top three. But without a healthy Lavender, it could be a first-weekend tournament casualty.

Good point Paul. I enjoy your points on your blogs... may not agree with all, but certainly enjoy them. Today, I agree. This year's team is certainly top three, if not the best ever. Did anyone else notice the stat around halftime showing that X has four active players at the top of the career scoring list? I believe it mentioned that it was the first time in Div I history this happened. That says something about X this year.

Paul,
You can't make too much of the loss. St. Joes was playing their final home game, against a ranked team, and basically a must win for their tournament chances.

I also saw that Drew didn't penetrate much. Xavier will be fine as he continues to get better.

The big thing will be having Xavier bounce back and win their last home game. I wouldn't get all to concerned with the NCAA tournement yet, it will be all about the seeding anyways.

Lots of questions, but I think Xavier is just fine. They're absolutely a round of 32 team, and almost certainly a Sweet 16 team.

The experience and intelligence on this team is probably the best in the nation. They play very smart basketball.

I don't care much about the A-10 Tourney except as prep for the NCAA. At any point that it looks like they need some player to get a rest, they should do the "NCAA-wise" thing and give that player a rest.

...have we all been watching the same team this year?...this team is not as strong as people have been giving them credit for with or without drew...x has had their share of close games that yes they won but better teams would have put these supposed weaker opponents away...and with all of the inconsistent teams in college ball right now i would say they are in the top 25...but they are not a top 10 type team...but with that being said i could see them get on another roll but then again i could see them get knocked out early...just hope they do not have another temple type loss...

In hindsight X will look back and say they should have sat down Drew L. when he got hurt.

The Achilles rumor makes sense. Any kind of ankle "sprain" should have been healed by now.

Tough environment to win in last night, even at 100%. The late comeback came as St Joe was trying to kill some clock and got careless with the ball a few times. Doesn't that always happen when a team with a big lead eases up on the accelorator in the closing minutes.

Muskies will be fine, with a big senior day win this weekend and a run thru the A-10.

From UC fan.

Not a Muskie fan, but rooting for them.

I think it exposes the quiet concern of XU fans, and maybe some of their players ... that they are not really a Top Ten teams and are still the not-quite-ready-for-primetime players.

It is one thing to emerge from the shadows of UC and put together an excellent season with some impressive wins ... and they certainly have. But it is another thing entire to reach a level of excellent where you ALWAYS take care of business (especially in the A-10). At least in my mind, it has me thinking about XU as one of those surprising Gonzaga-type team that could leave very early or reach the Elite Eight. And I can already see my bracket falling apart because I, once again, predict what I would like to see happen, rather than what I expect.

Glass half-full:

The Muskies' only loss without a healthy Lavender is by 5 points at Saint Joe's.

Glass preparing to spill:

I'm more concerned about their performance at home vs. GW than last night. Peaked too soon? We'll see.

The A-10 tourney was going to be an after-thought. Now, I think it's vital for XU to solidify its NCAA seed and, more importantly, to recapture the swagger they had in Jan.

Hey anonymous 9:52,

How long were you waiting for Xavier to lose until you spoke up? "This team is not as strong as people have given them credit for", you're right, and six players averaging double digits is just medicore. Please.

I don't care what conference you're in, unless you're Memphis in Conf USA, only losing two conferences games is pretty strong. Inconsistant? Sure...but try not to forget, the selection committee doesn't make their selections based on the margin of wins, just wins. By the way, we have 25 of them. It was my inclination that beating teams like K-State, Kent State, Indiana, Dayton (all teams that have been ranked or are still ranked in the top 25) would be conisidered pretty strong...hm, teach me a thing or two if you would.

Paul, interesting question. I'm a sophomore at Xavier and the campus isn't sure what to make of this loss yet either. The general consensus is not to worry, the A10 Tournament is coming and we'll still have our 2-3 seed. But it's always been my theory that Xavier plays to the level of their competetion; so if they're playing Tennessee, they'll play like their playing the 4th ranked team in the nation, and if they are playing GW, they'll play like a team who won't be doing much in March.

Sucks, but it is what it is. It's always been that way.

Probably a mixed blessing for XU. Pundits are so critical of mid-majors, this will probably hurt them in the rankings more than say, Carolina losing on the road to a marginal ACC team, but the factors are similar. Emotional, must win for home team, with better road team having little to play for. Hopefully it sends a message to X that they have to bring it every night and allows them to refocus for the tourney. If they win out they should still get a 3 seed, which is just about the same as a 2.

I hate when people say that a team just isn't that good because they have won a lot of close games. Lets define a close game as a game won by five or less or in overtime.

I guess Tennessee isn't that good since they have 9 games close games.

Same with Texas, they have had 7 close wins.

Xavier has only had 5 close wins, granted they have come more recently, but regardless, a win is a win, a loss is a loss.

only real negative about losing last night is it pretty much kills the chances for a 2 seed. Win the A10 tourney and get the 3 seed in DC.

I think X has handled the Drew ankle situation fine. If they had rested him until the NCAA tourney he would be rusty. All signs point to him being near 100% for the tourney and so far they have only lost one game with a gimpy Lavender. I will trust the XU Training Staff and coaches who have examined Drew's injury over speculation by a columnist and anonymous internet posters.
