Things that make you say Hmmm
The Drew Lavender Saga gets curiouser and curiouser. Sean Miller says Drew asked out of the game last night. That answers 1 question, sort of: The Xavier party line had been Drew's ankle could only get better by playing on it. They stuck to that logic in expecting Lavender to play Saturday. Though, to me, it's hard to understand how a bad ankle gets better when you run, jump and cut on it.
Lavender obviously feels the same way. Question: If he thought he could play, why would he opt out? There's money to be made. Missing games now equals missing auditions for NBA people. Why would Lavender want to do that, unless he felt his ankle was so bad, he couldnt perform well?
Why would he bring this team this far, then opt out?
The guy that Miller has praised for his toughness suddenly goes soft?
Makes no sense.
Until someone invents a Painometer, I'm not going to question an athlete's injury. Only Drew knows Drew's pain. And it has been obvious since the injury that he's not right.
Miller and athletic trainer Mike Mulcahey have made it clear they expect Lavender to play through whatever pain he has. In other words: We've handled the injury properly. You suck it up and go. The fact that Drew isnt playing is on Drew.
I'm not sure that's fair, for the reasons stated above.
Regardless, last night's W notwithstanding, this is only a decent team w/o Lavender, not the very good model and wild-card Final 4 group some of us believed. Another 10 days to get something straightened out.

Isn't it quite possible that Drew wanted to sit out because a: he knew that Xavier could handle Richmond without him; b: even if his ankel is better, why play in a meaningless game and chance hurting it for much more meaningful games to come; c: NBA auditions???
Don't be too confused; it's common sense. No reason to play Xavier's star against a team that could possibly be handled by the second string...Say Miller does play Drew and something bad happens...then as a writer, what exactly are you saying in the paper tomorrow? I don't know, maybe something along the lines of how irresponsible on Sean's part for letting him play?
Paul, you certainly have been hard on X during the past few days. Or are you being hard on Indiana's future head coach?
Enough about the Muskies, what do you think about the Bearcats and where Mick Cronin has this program going after two years? Your man Koch is taking on a storm of angry UC'ers over at his blog - the world awaits words from you on this subject.
Hey Paul, we havent had a three dot lounge in quite a while. Just a thought
"Enough about the Muskies"
No, enough about the Bearcats and their woes since the departure of Huggy...As long as Xavier is pushing top seeds in the NCAA and the Bearcats are trying to make the NIT, you better get used to Muskie news. We've had plenty of Bearcat news to last us for ages. It's March, SHAWDOW KNOWS, we usually discuss teams that will be playing.
As for Indiana's future coach? Better do some more homework and try to avoid being so easily coaked by a flash-in-the-pan news story.
PD
The X saga is interesting but I too want to hear your thoughts on UC. In particular, are you still of the mind that UC fans and Huggs supporters should "move on", Mick's got this program moving in the right direction, support the kids, etc. Mick appears to have lost the team this year and the program dropping to a new low. Makes the Huggins' backers look prescient.
What's your take now?
This is not the best time to have a rift between Miller and Lavender.
I guess Miller decided to call out Lavender by not offering compliments about him to the press on senior night and making him look like a weak quitter.
I guess it could work. Maybe Lavender will now try to prove himself to Miller.
But Lavender won't have to prove himself to X fans, who mostly view Miller's actions as a bitter ploy.
I haven't been following the Drew Lavender saga extremely closely, but from afar I don't quite understand how Xavier is handling it.
I would almost not even play him in the A10 tournament.
I'm sure Sean Miller has a better handle on this then the rest us, but I don't understand why he'd be upset for Lavender not playing the other night.
Without a 85-100% Lavender the Musketeers probably lose in the second round or 3rd round.
With him they could definitely be a dark horse for the elite 8 or Final 4.
Lavender's interesting, Paul, but is something like a revolt going on in the UC Bearcat locker room?
Blowout...worse than that, really.... by a team they lost to by one point about a month ago.
5-6 straight ugly losses in a row.
Mitchell expelled from team for reasons no one knows.
Where there's smoke............
This isn't rocket science, Paul. Miller is, and has been, trying to motivate a guy who he's had to kick in the rear-end a few times before. Lavender is a great player but he seems to have a 'tude. Being a former player himself - and a point guard at that - I would think Miller would have a better gauge than you about when a guy should be able to play and when he shouldn't. Everyone who follows Xavier basketball knows that Miller is a very tough-minded coach, and he wants his team to reflect that same mentality. It's obvious he's frustrated with Drew. Let him blow off some steam, handle Drew the way that's made the kid one of the best PGs in the country, and watch what happens.
It's always hard to tell for sure, but I suspect this team will perform better than expected without a 100% healthy Drew Lavender. Look at how many people wrote Kentucky off when Patterson went down. The Richmond win without Lavender just might've shown this team they have guys who can step up. Good coaches have a way of working through trouble spots like this, and I consider Sean Miller to be an excellent coach.
basic anatomy and physiology principle at work.
Davis' law states that soft tissue heals in the manner in which it is stressed. If you have drew lavenders ankle and you want it to be able to run/cut/jump when the time for his full return then you better have him run/jump and cut as much as possible within the limits of pain while you are rehabbing him. You can't mimic the stresses of playing for the injured ligament on the sidelines in rehab. The game is way more intense.
The best chance for a full and complete recovery for this tourney run is to play him continuously as much as pain allows.
Off topic from the XU game.
Did anyone see the halftime interview between Brad J and Fr Graham ?
The XU Prez showed great personality and enthusiasm for his basketball program. He's a wonderful PR man for the program and the university.
It no wonder XU has attained and maintained such a successful BB program with that kind of support from the top.
In Clifton, when was the last time Nancy Z even attended a BB game ?
Paul,
Seriously I have tried to buy into the Mick Cronin thing at UC. I want him to do well. I'm not one of the Huggins flunkies who want failure for everyong but Bob.
But I have a hard time trying to accept the headlines that talk about THE WORST LOSS IN 95 years!
He was a great player and a very nice man, but horrific coach never Tony Yates did that badly on any of the cold nights at RC.
I think it is time for you guys in the media to start looking at things criticaly over there other that just saying Mick's gonna be ok, or its just gonna take more time. I'm not sure anymore that its gonna be ok.
The game Thursday night is huge just to see if Mick can get a team to bounce back.
We may learn a lot about if he can handle the job or not.
Its rare for me to do this steppin up for an X guy.
But Lavender is the only one who knows just how much pain he is in.
I haven't seen him lay down before.
So why would I believe he is now.
Why the heck are people calling him out now.
Frankly thats crap.
5:53 - You must've written that post before you had your morning coffee. I agree totally about Fr. Graham, he's well-respected and appreciated at X, but what do you think would happen at Fifth Third Arena if Nancy Zimpher showed up? It would be mahem. There is so much hatred amongst the UC fanbase for her that she would need Secret Service protection - and I'm not even sure if that would be enough.
Bomber2musky,
I bet you also believed that Matta wasn't going to leave! Better do your homework.
I know this was a post about X - but give Mick 2 more years, that'll be his first total class. He has had tremendous bad luck. If they have Williams, they might have even made the NCAA's. Although I have been wondering about his comments and the attitude of his players.
In terms of X, I think it's stupid to play Lavender if you don't need him. He's the key to their post season success
Anonymous,
Everyone and their mother knew Thad was leaving. He was also Ohio State's first choice ( as he was asked the day after Xavier lost to Duke). Want a list of candidates for the IU job? Look it up and see where Miller falls. I have plenty of stats homework to do without having to check on some random guy's excited rant because he read an eye-grabbing story in the paper. Please.
Nancy is the University president. Huggins "thought" he was. See ya later.
"When was the last time Nancy attended a game?" Last night?
Paul:
After the Xavier-Richmond game, you said on your radio show that Coach Miller and Drew Lavender were involved in a "stare-down." I know it's your job to speculate, but you went way out on a limb and then proceeded to saw it off.
The "X" factor, so to speak, is the fact that Drew Lavender has never sustained a serious injury in his entire basketball career - until a month ago.
Drew played very well against the hapless UD Flyers today in the A-10 quarterfinal game, so I don't expect we'll hear any more talk from you about the nonexistent "stare-down" between coach and player. It was a good non-story while it lasted, I guess.
