Gotta love the competition

Great post from J. Fay re J. Cueto and the rotation. If Cueto makes it, I'm guessing it won't be with W. Krivsky's complete blessing. To me, Fogg is In, Affeldt is in the 'pen. If Cueto is In, that leaves 3 guys for 1 job: Bailey, Belisle, Volquez. Whom do you choose?

If Cueto is In, do you want Bailey, too? That's a lot of green for a manager not big on having players take their lumps in the bigs. Belisle? OK this spring, not lights out, but a vet. Volquez? Nope, not yet.

I havent been big on D. Baker bringing in Guy after Guy... Fogg, Affeldt, Patterson, Hairston. If you want the kids you refused to trade to play, then stop bringing in vets over top of them.

But I understand the logic... make players compete... perhaps w/Fogg, Affeldt, Cueto etc., H. Bailey is a little more receptive, shall we say, to sage advice.

With so many candidates and so few spots, everyone has to be a little more alive in March. Nothing wrong with that.

Competition is nice. The problem in team sports is measuring results in a rational and impartial manner.

That's why the Olympic Competition this summer is real sport. It's the clock and the tape measure in the purest of sports.

A pitcher might miss because some old radio fogey doesn't like the knife he wears on his belt. What the he__'s that got to do with baseball?

I hope Dusty is the guy and I do support him. However, I question the way Bruce is being handled. Why did Dusty go out of his way to question his health/durability? Its simply erroneous, particularly for a team with Griffey's history, Dunn's arthroscopic surgery last fall and Ryan Freel. Sounds to me like the decision has been made to send Bruce to AAA and every opportunity along the way to manufacture an excuse , he will embellish. Dusty's closet includes 3 main criticisms.
1.) He prefers veterans over youth
2.) He destroys young arms
3.) He prefers HIS instincts over stats and will stick with a guy who cant get the job done despite objective evidence to the contrary.

These arent my criticisms, this is part of his legacy in CHicago/SF.

By putting PAtterson/Freel in CF as a lead off hitter over Bruce, he is validating two of those 3 criticisms. Both guys have woeful On base percentages. AS a lead off hitter, nothing is more important.

Dusty is quoted in C10 today of the Enquirer re: Bruce and Patterson's acquisition meaning Bruce is AAA bound, "No, I didnt say that. I dont leave open ended sentences. I say whats on my mind."

One article over on C10, in regards to roster cuts , he answers, " I dont know" when asked when the first cuts would be made. "If I did, I wouldnt tell you."

How do you reconcile those two quotes Paul?

If Jay Bruce is in Louisville and Corey Patterson or Ryan Freel is in CF Opening Day, the Dusty honeymoon is over.

For the record, I also think hazing Bruce is growing old quick. Sure ,a little fun at the rookie's expense is tradition, but Griffey and Baker could end it...yesterday. Maybe if Dunn worked as hard at getting better, instead of being the clubhouse goofball, he'd be a perennial All-Star,clubhouse leader, and revered in this city. This does nothing to change the perception of Adam Dunn.
Grow Up, Adam.
