Madness

I'm not crazy about cliches, but Madness is such a good description of what goes on the next 3 weeks, especially this Thursday and Friday, I'll keep using it. A few thoughts:

When I retire, among the first places I want to go is Vegas for the opening weekend. Been? What's it like?

The best 2 days in sports are Thursday and Friday of this week. The best activity in sports is bellying up to the sports bar at noon with your bracket(s) and taking in 4 games at once.

Why do they have to start the title game so late (9:21)? No other sport has this late a start time. Nobody wants to stay up until almost midnight on a Monday night.

Are you with J. Boeheim in wanting more (many more) teams in the tournament? Not me. I get that more schools are D-1 than when the Madness went to 65, and parity has become a (bigger) fact of life. But let's reward due diligence between November and March. The best event in sports needs no tweaking.

The only irritant in March (not including D. Vitale and B. Raftery) is coaches control-freaking so many games by calling timeouts every 5 or 10 seconds. Here's a thought: Trust the players you recruited, signed and coach. If they're down 1 with 15 seconds to play and get a rebound, let them play. Calling a TO allows the other team to set its defense, so the advantage gained is minimal in most situations. Sometimes, their playing is better than your coaching.

Nothing kills drama in these games like excessive TO-calling. What is it, 5 TOs a team, plus the 4 TV TOs? That's potentially 18 play stoppages a half. Ridiculous. Basketball is a game of rhythm and flow. Don't ruin it by playing puppeteer.

We'll hear, if we havent already, that players should be paid. We'll hear about the NCAA's $6 billion deal with CBS while the poor players can't buy a cheeseburger or do their laundry. Just stop. They get tuition, room, board, books, tutors for zip. The best get 4 years (or however long they choose to stay) of a pro audition. If you think they should be paid, run that by a regular student working 25-30 hours a week waiting tables while taking a full course load.

Here's what the NCAA should do, though. Pay the transportation costs of parents/guardians to the Madness. That'd be a great gesture and wouldnt cost much.

Don't go nuts with the upsets. The committee knows what it's doing. It gets better at it every year.

If you must, I advise these bracket-busters: St. Joe's over Oklahoma. Davidson over Gonzaga. Either WVU in Round 2 or Xavier in Round 3 over Duke. I think the only 1 seed not in San Antonio is Memphis, which will lose either to Pitt or Texas.

If all of this happens, I will gloat until the Fourth of July. If none happens, I will disavow all knowledge.

Dah-dah-dah-dah-Dum-Dah-Dah-Dah.

Spending week one in Vegas is amazing but BRUTAL on the body. Up by 8am... plan your bets... placed by 8:30... find a seat (Mandalay Bay is our book of choice).. spend the next 12 hours watching hoops, drinking, and placing more bets. Then we typically go out and aren't back to the room until 2am or so - only to do the whole thing over again on Friday. By Saturday around 1pm - I'm usually fried. But I absolutely love it.

Xavier's two losses to St. Joe's in eight days is an issue, though both can be explained partly: Each involved the Hawks fighting for their Tournament lives.

Paul, above is a quote from your article today. What??? Are not 90% of all teams in conference tourneys fighting for their tourny lives. What a lame excuse.

You mean every regular season conference champ automatically has an excuse to lose in the conf tournament because of this excuse.

Paul, think this through again.

Leaving for Vegas in 2 days and I can't wait. Hope to place my round one bets on Wed night to avoid some of the rush and allow me to sleep in a bit-assuming I make it to bed. Poker, craps, NCAA tourney, booze, and cigars sound like a nice combination for a couple of days. Note to self, pack visine and excedrin.

2 things. I agree with your point on Vitale because he's such a Duke homer, but how can you not like Bill Raftery? I mean "Send it in Jerome!" "the onions!" "Mandaman defense!" He's the best color man of any sport. Secondly, my Miami math shows that 4 tv timeouts and 5 team timeouts = 14 potential stoppages for a half, not 18 as you spoke.

Also, Keystone Light is urine water. At least go for the Natty Light if you are going to go cheap beer.

DD... yeah, my math not so good. 14 is still about 10 too many. Let 'em play. Raftery is annoying. He speaks very little comprehensible English, and that pseudo-sense of excitement at the end of many of his sentences makes me wanna hurl. He is a Vitale knockoff. Why would anyone wanna be a Vitale knockoff?

And, as always, Keystone rocks.

1. The tournament does need tweaking. They need an entire play-in round where the 16-20 Coppin State's of the world from the garbage conferences have to play any deserving team that is rated in the top 64 but is left out.

2. Money: see below

Athletics Scholarships Fall Far Below Expectations, Report Says
The athletics scholarships that many parents and high-school athletes perceive as hard-won tickets to a college education actually amount to only a fraction of the total college cost, The New York Times reports.

In a three-part series titled “The Scholarship Divide,” which concludes today, the Times reports that parents’ and athletes’ expectations for winning coveted athletics scholarships are frequently at odds with the financial realities of college sports, in which few scholarships cover anything close to the total amount of tuition and other expenses.

The Times cites data, provided by the NCAA, showing the average athletics scholarship to be $10,409, with awards in some sports, like baseball and track and field, dipping as low as $2,000.

Most scholarship athletes, far from living the high life, keep grueling schedules in exchange for their sometimes paltry awards, the series reports.

As coaches attempt to convince recruits’ parents that, indeed, the long-awaited scholarship is truly only a quarter of the overall cost, the varying amounts of scholarship money distributed to players can fuel dissension among teammates.

65 is almost too many teams to begin with. These coaches that want it up to more teams are ridiculous. Maybe they should play better during the regular season.

The timeouts are fine. I disagree that the coaching difference is negligible. The offense will almost always have the advantage if the coach is setting up a play.

Dick "ACC" Vitale is a mouth. He loves Duke way too much. Their are simply too many Duke homers as it is, that is why Duke is sooooo overrated.

Doc,

I was standing at my local Kroger on Friday trying to pick out a 12 pack to watch the SEC tourny games with, when I remembered your blog and went with the Keystone Light. I never had it before, and have to say it was a pleasant surprise.

Congratulations to X on getting a 3 seed and getting a VERY favorable draw. Georgia is physical, but a bad team. Purdue relies on freshman, and Duke is simply a 3 pt shooting team. These teams are all very beatable. It's hard to imagine them getting a more favorable bracket.

Xavier has a favorable draw, but I can almost see them taking an early exit. Honestly... what have they done that is worthy of respect? Who have they beaten who is still in the top 25? Indiana? And you expect them to make the final four? They're still fighting for respect because they can't even win the A-10 tourney, and you expect them to upset Duke?

I see Xavier getting upset.

Paul, hate to say it but Dustin is right. Raftery is fun to listen to and his not a Vitale knock off. Vitale is way to loud and outspoken, taking sides etc. Raftery says funny things and he is not over the top.

Cheap beer, go get some Rolling Rock. Good ice cold beer especially in warm weather and with a huge Cheeseburger.

X is a bit overrated this season, no question. They are a team that could just as easily take a first round exit going against a hot Georgia team as make the Elite Eight. They are deep, but they are a fickle team. Personally, I just don't see how they rated a 3 seed.

That said, they got the best draw of any 3 seed to have a chance to make the Elite Eight. They'll go as far as Lavender can take them.

Doc,

Do you think Nancy Zimpher might be able to call in a favor to Huggins and get some tickets for the BearCats to watch the big dance?

The NCAA tourney is great for many of the reason's mentioned. Especially the fact that 65 teams get a chance-which is a perfect number...the NCAA football folks could learn alot, but that's another story.

Rafferty is actually better than Vitale IMO. One thing people often forget is that on Thursday and Friday there is a considerable lull in the action between 5 and 7pm. This always seems to stun people at the bars. After about 5 hours of great coverage and thrilling finishes, you have to wait for the night games to start.

I also think the Committee takes $$ into consideration when setting this up. UK clearly did not deserve to go-yet they can draw a million fans-regardless of where they play. Also, last year's 2nd round pairing of XU/OSU and also the UK/UC match up a few years ago seemed to be somewhat staged to draw large crowds. It's still legit, but they definitely don't work in a vacuum.

Who cares about the NCAA tournament?

UC (13-18) with Coach Footinmouth are going to the CBI!

Paul,

Just to keep things light in this often "too heavy" world ... I tried to send over a truck load of Kleenex to Sean Miller's house Sunday night.

It was apparently turned away at the door.

The tissue was for Stanley Burrell.
I figured the "passionate" senior would find some sort of perceived slight with the NCAA committee in Xavier's #3 seed AND it's first round match-up.

Look, I know ... I know ... we don't pick on the kids.
Yet I've read and listened to just about enough of a guy who really ought to know better than to shoot his mouth off.

Burrell's ripping of the A-10, it's players and it's chief rival's best play (Dayton's Roberts)
shows that XU still isn't ready for prime time.

Do you know what we call his act of late:

"Mid Major."

And guess what?
We're X fans.

We are just tired of the guy who used to shoot his team out of contention, now either has such low self esteem or such a high opinion of himself, he has to rip others in the process.

Ugh.
The rest of the team is lights-out GOOD.
I can do without the drama of Mr. Burrell.

Any other X fan who applauds such behavior knows deep down that he's a bit embarassing and if he were on UC or UD they'd hate everything about him.

Definitely agree on the timeout thing. How about 1 TO/team in last minute or 2?
Still to many but a huge improvement.
Like you Paul, I don't see TO's giving anyone (except advertisers) a big advantage.

Paul Daugherty - Many of us look forward to this time of year. March Madness - Great! So...what is your problem? The reason I look at your Blog once in a while is to laugh at your off the wall comments. So today you don't like it that some games start too late for you. Or, because a coach wants to coach his team the way he should, not the way you think that he should. Oh yes! Also the comment from the moron about Nancy Zimpher and tickets for the Bearcats. For someone who coasts through life your outlook on so many subjects is depressing. I have said this before...give up the Blog, let someone who enjoys doing it, write the posts. I think the Blog is now show-prep for your radio show which I have never listened to. If Huggins team gets by the first round you will have a column praising him and all your followers will walk lock step with you.

Is the dah-dah-dah-dah-dum-dah-dah-dah referring to the CBS Basketball music whenever they go to commercial?

Who is this WE you refer to? Is there a group of X fans who want an anonymous spokesman?
