B. Knight in the studio
First off, I'm a Knight Guy, god help me. The good so far outweighs the bad, there is no adequate scale. But this isnt about that.
Every time another ex-coach or -player gets a media gig, it's one fewer job for a guy who spends at least 4 years in school learning the trade. And by and large, most of the ex's on TV suck sewer water.
Most are unwilling to criticize. Some are barely understandable. Some are unwilling to put in the time to do it well. They believe their status as athletes confers some special exemption from learning a new trade.
(The fabulous C. Collinsworth is entirely exempt from this rant.)
Some spent their careers either trashing the media or refusing to deal with the media. Which brings me to BK. Someone who so often belittled the Fourth Estate now will make his living in its heathen, unwashed midst. A bit hypocritical, no? Lump Knight with Sterling Sharpe, Bill Walton and, to a lesser extent, Marshall Faulk, as a guy who disdained the people he now so willingly joins.
Too often, the personality that attracted a network to an ex- in the first place disappears when the red light comes on.
That said, I'll watch Knight. I'll TiVo his first effort, as I'll be on the radio at 6. But only out of curiosity. If he's a Dick Vitale gusher, I'm done. If he's arrogant and condescending, I'm done. Knight's a brilliant guy. Let's see if he can be one of the few ex's to make TV sports better for having hired him.

I remember Solomon Wilcott's first attempts at stories for the local news. He was horrible but he did seem to actually care about the answers and was actively listening. He then seemed to do the work to become a better broadcaster. He's the rarity though.
Paul,
You found the perfect adjective ("gushing") for Dick Vitale. Has this guy EVER criticized a player or coach?
That said, I've pretty much been a Bob Knight supporter. But one of his strengths has never been the ability to deal with criticism from the heathen media -- always looked down his nose at most reporters, in fact.
It'll be interesting to see if he is indeed objective in his observations, given the fact that he didn't appreciate those from others when he was coaching.
I hope he can be, if only to counteract the "gushing" Vitale and Jay (Mr. ACC) Bilas.
Of course I'll tune in to see, so they've succeeded.
...that's the problem...his "good" outweighs his "bad"???...the problem is the bad...the repeated bad...they don't cancel each other out...as sparky always used to say..."it doesn't cost anything to be nice and civil to people..."
I'm going to have to disagree with you on a few counts, Paul.
1. Ex-jocks are in the role of expert commentator/analyst. In that role they don't take a job away from a school-trained talking head. It's really no different than a news department retaining an ex-general for insight they offer on military operations. I appreciate their input for the most part. Do they prevent some deserving, civilian, school-trained broadcaster from offering armchair, egghead, military strategy to the nation? (I sure hope so!!)
Restricting ourselves entirely to Cincy, I'll see your Chris Collinsworth and raise you a Warren Spahn, a Joe Nuxall and a Bob Trumpy.
2. Entrenched media talking heads are no better at criticism than anyone else. They play politics so they can get access. I'm sure they play politics for other reasons as well. Perhaps you can tell me why we've yet to hear peep one of criticism about Mick Cronin's job from any of our talking heads in this town.
Even giving credit for the bad situation he inherited, at best he rates a C this year on an A-F scale. The vast majority of his freshmen recruits have been found wanting and been unused. Arguably, Cronin has not LED that team. One could even claim they are passive/aggressive with him.
Steve from Florence says
Let me see, my choices are
A. A wanna be jock whose jealousy over never being athletic enough to make the team, has left them jealous and condescending, but they sure are hell with those commas and periods
or
B. A former athlete or coach who can accurately describe the reality of competition at its highest level and who from time to time gets irritated with us for not appreciating the circumstances the competitors find themselves in, even though it is a reality that we can never truly know.
All in all since they are more qualified with imparting the substance of the issues themselves, I'll have to chose B.
Are you kidding me???
Talk about the pot calling the kettle black...
You're a print "prominent" journalist leveraging your position with the Enquirer with a plum job on radio. Do you really think you would be on radio if you weren't a columinist with the Enquirer???
I think we all know the answer to that: No Enquirer gig, no radio for you.
Paul, I've struggled to see your side of BK. Hopefully this gig will be a chance to show-off his good side and a sense of humor (other than the condescending variety). It could work out well for everyone. Just don't have the grandchild on the show.
(The fabulous C. Collinsworth is entirely exempt from this rant.)
WTF Collinsworth has a great steak at Jeff Ruby's restaurants but he is the worst sportscaster ever. Your radio show is the second worst!!!
6:45 back again.
BK has been great tonight - Knight's Insights & sparring with Digger. He even had a calming effect on Digger so I didn't have to mute Digger as I usually do.
Digger talking about Louisville going to play zone against Pitt - emphasized "zone" and BK said "I don't speak Spanish".
He's really got a sense of humor?
Good post Paul. I agree, Collinsworth is one of the best. It's too bad he got stuck with Gumble on the NFL network. Hopefully they willl ditch Gumble soon. As far as the worst, it clearly has to be Emmitt Smith. That guy can't say anything correct on the air. He messes up names, grammer and somethimes looses his train of thought. As far as another good one, not to be a homer, but I loke Boomer. He works well with Marino and Sharpe.
"guy who disdained the people he now so willingly joins."
Digger and Dickie V...that is the big reason BK has made the exception. He is friends with two of his co-workers now.
I don't see how comparing Knight's decades of coaching experience to a guy who spent 4 years in college is valid at all. Nice try but wrong again PD.
PDaug, I commend you on your restraint in not "moderating" some of these posts.
Maybe it's best to just let them display their problems?
Hey anon 6:38
Is that you Geraldine?
Paul - thanks for the last 2 posts - they've been great.
You should check out King Kaufman over on salon.com. He writes a sports daily column I think you would enjoy. They'll ask you to sign up for a premium membership - don't sign up - and just get yourself a handle to write letters after the article.
You two are my favorite sports writers - and we have a handful of reds fans in that forum.
living big.
You were talking about good athletes turn bad anilysts and you left out emmitt smith. I suppose her deserves his own article though. look foward to reading it!
Mike in C-town up P-town down
I cannot stomach the "media are jock wannabes and retired athletes are expert" analysis.
That's from a jock-sniffing wannabe poster himself.
Most athletes SHOULD have insight into certain situations, but never let you know about it.
They're either too dumb to articulate it or to afraid of being critical of colleagues.
Emmitt Smith got a plum job on ESPN and was horrible. He would either just parrot what other panelists had said, fumbling over his words, or say things like, "they need to run the ball more to have more balance". Great. Thanks Emmitt, couldn't have figured it out myself.
Experts are needed and welcome when they're thoughtful and critical, see Collinsworth, Steve Young etc. or critical and entertaining, like Michael Irvin, but the bulk of them are pompous windbags who spout cliches and excuse away mistakes.
That's why journalists are needed, their education tells them how to gather, analyze and impart facts and opinion.
I'm so tired of ex-jocks who say nothing.
Even the "mastermind" of Bill Parcells never says anything the average 14 year old fan watching the game on his own couldn't figure out.

I'm kinda torn on this one. As an ex College baseball player, when I watch the MLB guys play, I don't wanna' hear Tim Mccarver's boring technical analysis, since I've been there, done that. I'd rather hear the colorful Marty B any day.
Now on the flip side, since I'm not a basketball player, I kinda enjoy hearing the technical aspects from the ex-jocks and coaches. Call me divided.....
Mason......I agree with steve from Florence, i would rather have an ex athlete doing the commentary than some wannabe sports talk host who couldn't make his highschool team. i would rather have a jock than some pain in the ass, cynical, negative midget who can find the good in anything invovling sports. i would rather have an ex jock than some sports writer/sports talk host who gives a free pass the Bob knight instead of holding him accountable for his deeds. Yes, i agree with you Steve. maybe ex jocks are the way to go because some of us are getting tired of the "Willie/700wlw/Cunningham style" of sports talk radio. Most of us like sports and get tired of the negative, cynical crap that goes for "sports talk radio" these dyas.
Would you like some cheese with that whine??
Sorry to break everyones consentration but - WTF is going on with 2008 Opening Day tickets magically available after the Reds raped their fans for email addresses last month. Just another reason to consider myself a foolish Reds fan ...
One thing a sports journalist would never do on the air is compare Bob Huggins to "400 pounds of butter."
That's why some ex-coaches/players should be in the booth.
Knight is self-centered enough (or self confident if you prefer) to let it loose and be hilarious. Of course, that might get him in trouble too at some point but, ultimately, the booth needs both.
