skip's Mass
Was as simple, eloquent and life-affirming as the man himself. Pat Kelsey gave the eulogy and said Skip would have been proud at the turnout. Kelsey was right. At least 500 people, maybe more, at Cintas Center, including former assistants and players. It ended beautifully, mournfully, hauntingly, with a bagpiper playing Amazing Grace as the mourners filed out. The tones of the pipes faded as the piper climbed the stairs and out of the building. I could feel the finality of Skip's death right then. Damn. All prayers to Skip's wife Nancy and his sons, Scott and Mark. Our loss is Heaven's gain.

Ironic that Skip's mass were to fall in the same week as Rick Reilly's latest column, where he plays to living a day in Hell, surrounded by a variety of sports characters, coaches, and athletes that may one day join him there. In no way will we ever read of Prosser being included in any similar piece.
Well put Doc.
God Bless Skip Prosser and his family.
On a lighter note...
Is that a new photo on the blog page? Nice pink shirt Doc...
I just wanted some other people's take on my thoughts below:
I am very excited about the young players coming up through the farm system, but I cannot help but worry about the added strikeouts that will be coming with Votto and Bruce (two guys the Reds are going to rely on heavily for a successful future). The Reds already strike out beyond an alarming rate. Imagine if the Reds decide they want to lock up Adam Dunn long-term in left field. Add Bruce to center and Votto to 1B and the Reds will likely get a pair of 150+ strikeout players. Imagine a 2008 or 2009 team where 500 strikeouts come from just 3 players. Some worry that the Reds will be unable to replace Dunn's power in the lineup, but have they not been watching Joey Votto and Jay Bruce in the minors? Other players that might very well be on those '08-'09 teams send some pretty nice breezes into the seats quite often:
K/AB (Approximations)
Josh Hamilton 1/4
Ryan Freel 1/4.6 ('06 numbers)
David Ross 1/3
Alex Gonzalez 1/5
The Reds need more Jeff Keppingers, and not just because he hits in the clutch, but because he makes productive outs and simply does not strike out. It is safe to say that the Reds will stick with their inexpensive young guys (Bruce and Votto), but Adam Dunn is another story. The poor guy has been argued about for years. He is having his best big league season by far, and I congratulate him on that, but the bottom line is: By keeping Dunn, the Reds will improve in two areas in upcoming seasons. Strikeouts and home runs; two things we DO NOT need.
Hey 2:33,
I could be wrong, but I think the shirt color is salmon.
his shirt is more a taupe-majenta-ish salmon...that dude with the afro who used to paint landscapes on tv--he'd know the color for sure...he had all kinds of names for his colors...me and a buddy of mine use to watch him paint while we were getting high...it was freakin' hilarious-crazy...of course, that was in high school and know I don't do that kind of stuff anymore
I think it's coral.
Doc,
When you lay your head on your pillow tonight ask yourself what Coach Prosser would say about you criticizing coaches so much. You have never had to make a coaching decision in your life - sometimes those decisions have to be made in seconds and heavens know we all make mistakes. You are a wonderful writer - too talented to be in sports - but you do not have to criticize coaches to be successful. If you are going to criticize - find the coaches that are bums and write about them. We have a lot of great coaches in Cincinnati in high schools, colleges and with the Reds and Bengals. You do not have to be a schill to be positive. Did you ever hear Coach Prosser talk the way you do? I didn't think so.
This went well.
hey, 10:17... you don't cite specific examples... my job is to write opinion... as you said, we all make mistakes, coaches included... your notion that I can't criticize b/c I've never coached is specious... does that mean I shouldnt vote for president b/c I've never been one? Taking heat/being accountable is part of the job, especially on the pro and college levels... I don't recall ever ripping a high school coach, b/c my wife was one and I know all about the long hours, low pay drill.
Paul:
I dont quite get the infatuation with UC FB Coach Brian Kelly. I know the guy leads the league in glibness, but I think I'll wait to see if he can back up all the talk off the field with a couple of big wins on it before professing my awe of him. Guy has spent his entire career in the minor leagues and his first recruiting class was ranked among the worst in the country. Team should be competitive this year simply because the coach who preceded BK left the cupboard full for him. Also, attendance at Nippert this season will be way up, but only because Marshall, U of L and WV fans will buy up all those tickets the locals here in Cincy would not take even if the athletic dept at UC tried to give them away.
Paul,
I'm very sad that folks like this tarnish a blog page about Skip's Mass.
I am a Bearcat football fan and am appreciative of the attention that Coach Kelly & the Big East is helping drive to UC. Thank you for your coverage. I enjoyed most :) of your story this morning.
In close though let me put this line of discussion where it belongs. On Skip Prosser and his untimely death.

Saints of God, come to his aid!
Come to meet him, angels of the Lord!
Receive his soul and present him to God the Most High.
May Christ, who called you, take you to himself;
may angels lead you to Abraham's side.
Receive . . . and Give him eternal rest, O Lord,
and may your light shine on him for ever.
Receive . . . Let us Pray.
All-powerful and merciful God,
we commend to you, Skip, your servant.
In your mercy and love,
blot out all the sins he has committed through human weakness.
In this world he has died: let him live with you for ever.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
AMEN.
