Baseball pressure (?)
Much has been made about P. Mackanin's ability to get the Reds to play loose. To M's credit, he's certainly managing that way. Witness his bringing in R. Freel to be a 5th infielder last week in Atlanta... he's managing as if he has nothing to lose, which he doesn't... but, I don't know, isn't "Baseball pressure'' kind of an oxymoron?
Pressure is running out of money before running out of month... it's dealing with a sick child... A. Gonzalez knows what pressure is... pressure is being falsely accused of a serious crime and not having the money to pay for a lawyer... it's losing your job, getting sued, a marriage falling apart. It's any number of things. It's not a millionaire losing a baseball game. What pressure, really, is J. Coutlangus under? Or K. Saarloos? Who else are the Reds going to wheel in here right now that's going to do any better?
You could argue the Reds havent felt enough pressure. The so-called "sense of urgency'' never really kicked in, did it? What, exactly, were the repercussions when J. Griffey loafed down to 1st last night, then got thrown out by about 6 miles going into 2nd? Will he feel "pressured'' to run harder next time? Uh, no.
Please give the rest of us the pressure of playing a game for guaranteed money, where you make no less a year than something like 325k. Where, when you go to arbitration, you either get a big raise or a bigger one, even if your performance lacks. Where you can be T. Coffey, bless him, and be rewarded for your badness with a 2-year contract. Where you can be M. Stanton and know you're making 3mil next year, no matter what.
Give the rest of us some of that pressure.Sometimes, a little perspective works.

having to wake up everyday with the last name "Coutlangus"... anyone ever see the Saturday Night Live skit a few yrs back - Christopher Walken was the host and he played a Southern General from the Civil War -"Colonel Lingus"?? i chuckle everytime Jeff Brantley says his name - it reminds of that skit.
Doc,
I agree with every one of your statements; but those by Anonymous 9:31 I'm not so sure about. Being under the pressure of having a similar name to that of a character Christopher Walken acted as in a Saturday Night Live skit? We should all be so lucky. I sure wish someone thought of me as Christopher Walken, a guy who is in EVERY movie, each time my name is mentioned. However, I get the occasional comparison to the Saturday Night Live character "Pat"...
You are absolutley right. Which is why Reds fans need to give a mulligan to Alex gonzalez and his "off-year" defensively at shortstop. He's under morepressrue than anyone can imagine. He's still a huge upgrade over Felipe Lopez. Fleipe Lopez's idea of stress was deciding which $800 outfit to wear that night and which buxom blonde to..... Felipe Lopez will never amount to anythign and everyone should rest assured that Alex Gonzalez is the guy.
Pat, what anon 9:31 said was a joke. obviously having a name like coutlangus doesnt really cause any pressure. I know you atleast used to have a sense of humor since you used to work at the news record.
Perspective is great, but c'mon...Maybe these guys don't feel the pressure of the situations you talked about, but they do certainly feel pressure...pressure induced by us, by fans that boo and whine, radio hosts that yet and demand change, tv personalities that get personal because of things that happen on fields. I just have to laugh a little whenever we try to give perspective in sports, and then lose that perspective during the next 8th inning collapse.
I was in Lexington on Wednesday afternoon and caught the Reds/Braves game on TBS. When John Coutlangus came into the game, Chip Caray wondered aloud what his nickname might be. Joe Sampson began to laugh hysterically and said he could think of a few but couldn't say them on the air. I'm just glad Dick Pole didn't have to go to the mound for a consultation.
Doc,
You're bleeding heart side is coming out(allusion to WLW promo). I do agree with you somewhat though other than your money argument as its not what you make its what you spend and save as far as pressure..just ask guys like Mike Tyson, some of the NFL stars who testified before Congress recently, and of course, MC Hammer. If a player at the minimum 325 k per year has bills and spending above 27k per month then he is worse off than me who spends less and saves the rest from my fractional salary.
Also who is J. Griffey? Is that Ken's cousin James?
All that said is it real pressure for you to do show prep or meet a deadline compared to the things you've mentioned in your article. All workers go through "work stress" that will always pale in comparison to family and life stress. Whether you are a customer service guy, a radio personality, or a major league baseball player there will always be job stress and pressure. Its basically as my former Program Director used to say, you have to put God first, family & yourself second, station third.
sure hope Junior isn't passing his "work ethic" onto his own children.
Go Bearcats!
Hey Paul - Did you see the NYT article about your buddy Bear Grylls being a bit of a fraud?
Hey, 648... nope I didnt...link it... kinda what i figured...

Doc-
This is not, necessarily, a post to this comment on the blog. But, I want you to write a story on how BAD Mike Brown still is for the Cincinnati Bengals. Here is a quote from the Wed. Enquirer regarding Mike Brown's view of Marvin Lewis:
"Listen, Marvin came here when we were down," Brown said of Lewis, hired after a franchise-worst 2-14 finish in 2002. "He turned this thing around. It speaks for itself the job he has done. Everyone in town respects him. Everyone inside the organization respects him."
Doc...Marvin Lewis hasn't "turned this thing around." He has 3 .500 seasons and one winning season in 4 years!!!! We've been to the playoffs ONCE. The Bengals finish the season flat, tired, and out of shape every year. Sure, it's not like the lost decade...but it's not "turned around."
Mike Brown has NO fire in his belly to win. He is satisfied with mediocrity.
Angry Bengal Fan.
chris - do you really think I was serious? Oh come on; most things said here should be taken with a grain of salt, even those that are intended to be serious.
