It's been awhile

Speaking of the Reds: The dog days are here. P. Mackanin allows in the morning paper that the Reds "have to start thinking (about). . . the little things.'' God help us. Where's he been all year, Venus?

Hedline says "Games in Florida, Atlanta set tone for season.'' Not for me, they won't. The tone's been set since the end of April. Losing teams don't expect to win. They usually don't think they can. The Reds have the players to be a .500 club. They don't have the heads for it. They're losers. Key Mackanin quote: "The last few innings (Sunday), the guys were in the mode: We're not going to win this game.'' Yep. Clubhouse culture needs an overhaul. A new manager with a ring or two might do the trick.

Meantime, curb the can-Krivsky talk.. good teams have stability at GM and manager... Reds playing the best example of that in ATL tonight... 2 years isnt enough time to evaluate a GM... hire a proven manager... give Kriv another year...

I'd expect a little trade before any big ones. People assume there is this great, big market for A. Dunn out there. Contenders don't covet hitting, though, especially when hitting long balls is all the guy does. I'd bet Lohse or Weathers goes before Dunn; I'd guess Hatteberg or Conine would also go before the Donkey. Note to Kriv: Take yer lumps and a few prospects for Dunner, and be grateful his 13-mil is off the books.

I'm not even slicing irons now. Thanks to 2 jobs -- and my own pitiful excuse for a golf game -- I'm shanking. It's embarrassing, pathetic, worthless and weak. Any tips welcome.

Program note: Me on ESPN News tonight (Monday), talking about...something.

Rescue Me has been a huge disappointment this year. I love frat/firehouse humor, but the show's going nowhere. Have a point, OK, Denis?

Anyone been to the Deveroes Summer League? Anyone lighting it up regularly? Any superstar cameos?

Here's hoping if Odell Thurman is straight and reinstated, we grant him the same kindness we heaped on Josh Hamilton...

Driving range is calling. God help the dudes on either side of me.

As long as Odell shows the same humility about his past and gratitude for another chance at his future as Josh has so eloquently done, I'm right there for Odell. Also.... Donkey?? what's up with that? I thought you guys buried the hatched (and not in your head). Best wishes on your golf game.

Silver lining?

No offense to Mackanin, but if the Reds keep losing he will only be here until the end of the year and then they might bring in someone else. I've been around long enough to see interims stay on for another year because they "earned the right." Last I checked, Pinella and Anderson weren't brought up through the system.

agreed, the Reds season has been over for three months.

As Reds fans we're now re-living a combination of the Bearcats' season under Andy Kennedy and the Bengals 2002 season, in that we have to watch three months of games before we can find out who the new leader of the ship will be (like we did with the 'cats), and yet we also have to suffer through just bad play, poor attitude, no motivation (like the bengals of 2002), almost hoping that we remain bad so that there's no chance of keeping the current leadership.

With all of that, it's still hard to believe this team has been this bad.

Doc, what's your take on Ronnie Oester? I doubt they'd even consider him, but he is fiery....you were around the clubhouse, is he the fire they should have hired in 2001? or does he wear on players quickly?

Good teams also have good GMs. No reason to keep a bad GM just because you want stability.

Apparently there's this golf guy who has "turned chess into checkers." I wonder who gave that endorsement? :)

The Reds won't get anymore for Dunn this year than they will next year at the trading deadline given that he becomes a FA at the end of this season if he's traded. Therefore, they might as well hold onto him until next July to see if the kiddie corps bullpen is learning anything this season and can perform next season.

Did you see the FA market this past offseason? $13M for Dunn's production will be a bargain. The Reds won't replace his runs produced for less than that, and the FA starting pitcher market for the coming offseason is pretty lousy. $13M won't buy much there, either.

Did you notice that the Indians just gave Eric Wedge an contract extension? It proves to me that you dont need a big name manager to win in the big leagues. Give the manager enough time and find him better players he will win. I think the reds could learn something from the Indians.

Here's the thing about Krivsky:

Always has an excuse, keeps his cards close to the vest, constantly gives you the impression he has no idea what he's doing.

It's not the Washington trade. That one worked out poorly for both teams so no one got hosed. Let's try: Extensions to the wrong people, Castro and Moeller as our big sticks on the bench, Jeff Conine as the only upgrade to an offense that couldn't hit down the stretch, failure to acquire solid pitching behind Harang and Arroyo(?), his refusal to be honest with the fans about the direction of the club, etc., etc.....

And really, the only excuse not to fire him is the brevity of his tenure. Hamilton and Phillips were low risk acquisitions. No need to go there, gang.

Open up that left foot a little bit towards your target. I can tell by your stance in the picture over there that you're not getting your hips all the way through. You can thank me later.

Why people like you think that Dunn is bad for a baseball team is beyond me. You take Dunn out of the Reds lineup and replace him with Norris Freaking Hopper, and you go from a decent offense to a not very good one.

Home Runs are a good thing. Why in the world would you want to turn Dunn into a slap hitter?

Hey, 607... don't miss the point... HRS are fine, just not that important to winning...and the Reds dont spend enough money to afford a 1-tool HR hitter who'd make 13 mil next year...

Odell has burned our trust already... (even after he was damaged goods) Hamilton hasn't. A world of difference that you should be able to see for yourself.

at 8:27 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Odell has already shown the same "humility and gratitude" for his second chance. So yes, Odell should expect the same treatment as Josh hamilton. unfortunately, that will not be the case in cincinnati with the fans and the media. I seriously doubt odell will be picked out for movie roles or given a nice litle nickname like "the natural". but we will see and it will be very interested in seeing if Cincinnati results back to it's old conservitive white doulbe standard that has plagued the Cincinnati sports scene for the last 30-40 years.

at 10:48 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

...and you don't think at one time Hamilton hadn't burned the D-Rays fans trust twice-over? So much so they ditched him and it took him years to earn the opportunity back into baseball. Are you kidding me, 0749?

at 11:50 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Odell will get the same love hamilton got, as long as he comes back and makes an impact. He'll need to produce some big hits and/or game changing plays. Hopefully he won't be injured or sick every other week.
Paul, what do you think the chances are that the reds try to contact barry larkin about the coaching position? I emailed marty and tom about this but didn't get to hear if they answered or not, so maybe you can tell me.
Josh

Of course HR's are important to winning. Scoring runs wins games. Without Dunn, this team would be even worse than it is.

Dunn is one of the two the most productive hitters in the Reds lineup. Tell me, when they trade Adam Dunn, who do they replace his production with? Norris Hopper?

why don't you ask those people in georgia anout odell's humility and gratitude you bengal nuthugger. He's a thug, period!

UC Hoops is about to be really good, really soon. Saw most of the guys over the weekend and was really impressed. They are STRONG. I'm talking Brennan, Fletcher & Ruben strong. Vaughn looks sharp and is going to lead the team. Alvin Mitchell is about to be an absolute stud and Mike Williams gives us some inside force we haven't had since Hicks and Max. Darnell Wilks can jump out of the gym, but will need to get stronger. I'll predict close to a 20 win season getting bumped to the NIT b/c the Big East is so deep and the NCAA Selection Committe caps off teams in power conferences so they can take the Air Force's of the world.

if Odell is a "thugg" then what does that make Josh hamilton......a reformed crackhead or the Natural..........dont go there......you can't win........ever...........pete rose

Apparently it takes a genius to wrap one's bean around the concept of trading Adam Dunn.

Here's how it doesn't work:
We trade Dunn, replace him with Hopper in left, gain absolutely nothing. (Yes, if you're unfortunate enough to have this severely limited perspective, it does seem like a poor idea.)

Here's how it does work: We trade Dunn, receive players in return that potentially make us a more balanced team and use his freed salary to acquire more players that might accomplish the same goal.

(also see: Bruce, Jay and Stubbs, Drew)

No shortage of outfielders, folks. Severe shortage of about everything else.

12:51, I love your anger. I am always angry. If any of you have a problem with me come find me at the tables Staurday night. I don't play for less than $10/$20. Because that's how I roll, Wooooooh.

When are people going to realize that home runs are worthless when no one is on base and your behind by 6 runs. Dunn is a good home run hitter, but he is a lousy RBI man. Long live Tony Perez!!!

Number one golf tip that always gets me through the rough patches: Take the club back low and slow while keeping the face pointed at the target as long as possible. Golf 101, but I'm constantly forgetting it. The joy will return, Doc!

Big East football does not have the mega stadiums of the Big Ten or Southeastern Conference. It does not have any team with the tradition of USC or Texas. But it does have one thing. Today, Big East football is better than ACC football. And who saw that 3 years ago? *

I just priced flights into Providence and surrounding airports with a 14 day advance purchase.
Flying into Providence is pretty pricy.
Flying from Dayton to Boston... not so much. $205. Boston is about an hour drive.
A four star hotel on HOTWIRE> $115
for a hotel next monday night.

lots of us have 2 jobs...just not a lot of high falutin folks like you...quit whining already...Also, as far as your golf game I dare you to come over to the West Side and golf...you'd get two things accomplished...you'd prove your not all talk and you'd actually visit the side of town whose sensibilities and reverence for all things good you write about, and you'd fit in perfect with the rest of us who hack like a mother...i dare you...leave whatever country club you belong to and golf on the west side just once. hell, do ANYTHING on the west side just once

In a defense of the Enquire's decision, last night Paul said on WLW that a round trip from Cincinnati to Providence was over $700 with a 7 day purchase.
So just for big fun in the summertime I thought about how they could have gotten there on a budget.

I picked the next Monday departure- Tuesday return available (after 7 days)
July 30th & 31st

Flying out of Dayton-
Dayton as you know is an easy option for folks who live in Cincinnati... if you live in the northern half of Cincinnati flying out of Dayton is actualy quicker because of better parking and shorter in airport lines.

Boston is about one hour drive to Newport. Not the closest airport..... but not a bad drive at all.

Flight- the lowest $205 on USAIR connecting through DC or Philly... for those who prefer United (thru Chicago, NYC or DC) they have some available flights running for $225. For more flexability in times $356.

Car Rental- Since you don't want to take a 49 mile cab ride a car rental is needed.
Two day rental of a standard size car (a little more in the notheast than here)
..... $134. One fill up, this trip shouldn't take a full tank of gas.... so I'll say $50 to be safe.

Hotel- a 4-star hotel booked on Hotwire $115 per night (1) night.
Or you can stay at a nice 3 star about 20 minutes away from the event for $75.

Food- You can't write on an empty stomach. northeast so I'll give 'em $35 a day. Keep in mind the Big East will be rolling food out to them at some of the events.

OK.... Totals are...

Airfare- $205- $356
Car rental (fuel)- $189
Hotel- $75-115
Food- $70
Add another $50 cause something always comes up on trips....

Total (min-max)- $589- $780
