Short Attention Span's guide to the weekend past

Before I start, anybody seen a decent movie for grown-ups this summer? Are there any? I mean... Transformers? C'mon. I'm not hunting Bergman here, just something someone over the age of 6 can watch.

Now then:

What kind of idiot takes heroin to an amusement park?

A. Pujols who hasnt hit a homer in 70-some at-bats, volunteers to be in the Derby tonight, anyway. It's why we root for him and boo Bonds.

Field announced for W&S tennis. It's great, as usual, might get Federer and Nadal in the final. This event is the best run, least appreciated sporting event in this area. It has been for so long, it has retired the crown. Go watch it sometime, even if you don't like tennis.

A few Favorites I failed to mention from a post a week or so ago: Esquire Theatre, Half-Price Books, the incredibly varied, cheap and good public golf courses here. A continued source of appreciation and amazement.

P. Mackanin's big personnel move is to give J. Valentin more PT? Really?

Brantley gets better and better.

Dumbest show I fell into while doing nothing: Man Versus Wild, on Discovery... dude gets dropped into the middle of the Costa Rican rain forest with, like, a pocket knife and a bottle of water, and we're supposed to believe he's Balboa. Watch it and laugh.

A. Harang snubbed 3x by Genius La Russa for all-star spot... could it because of the beaning Harang laid on Cards catcher Barrett?

Live big, Ray Fosse.

Any idea when the actual draw will be released?

Unlikely I can get off work during the week, but I would love to see the semi-final round.

I'm sure Nadal and Federer will be on opposite sides of the bracket. But what a treat it would be to see back to back matches with Federer and Nadal.

Any insight PD, or any knowledgeable blogger??

Matt.. those guys will play almost exclusively at night, especially after the early rounds... the draw will not tell you when they will play... that's almost a daily decision, depending on the match-ups

A hell of a post here, Doc. You're not the only one with a short attention span. Allow me to add my two cents.

As far as movies go, I think I can suggest one I saw just last night: License to Wed. Robin Williams at his best. I mean, the man just gets funnier. Basically the movie portrays every reason to not get married.

The HRD field this evening should be spectacular. Too bad I can't watch it, at least live; I'm at work. God it sucks working evenings, but I'm sure you do a lot of that as well.

Good suggestion on W&S Tennis. It's something I've wanted to get a glimpse at for quite some time. I've heard, and continue to hear, nothing but positive things about it. I am far from a tennis fan, but would probably enjoy a day there.

Considering I haven't played a round of golf in 7-some-odd years, it doesn't mean I don't want to. Bringing it up as you have makes me want to get out even more. Sure I'm nothing but a hacker, at the very best, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the game.

As far as P-Mac's move to give Javy more PT, it's not all bad. I don't believe in keeping someone on the payroll as just a DH and/or PH. If he got to this level, he had to have decent defensive skills at some level.

I'm not sure there's much more room for improvement with Brantley. I've loved him since he was a player, and now his ever-growing commentary career. However, there is one position that I think might suit him well: Reds pitching coach. Or even a pitching of some kind anywhere. Give me your opinion, Dick Pole or Jeff Brantley?

Paul- I'm curious why doesn't anyone suspect Pujols for steroids or HGH.
He is built like a brick sh*t house. But he never gets critizised or questioned.

Jeff Brantley is such a cool addition to the booth. He has great style, charisma, and baseball sense. Observation: Marty is really coming off pretty snarky these days. At times he seems to be taking is "self-annoited right" to say anything that is on his mind to a level of obnoxious. It's one thing to state his opinion yet another to do that AND stick his knife (in this case his mouth) in and twist. He could learn from Jeff Brantley. Jeff criticizes without making it personal.

The W&S Masters draw comes out the Saturday before the tournament begins. So that's Aug. 11 I believe.
Federer and Nadal will both have first round byes. So Tuesday would be the earliest either would play. Wednesday more likely if they go to the finals in Canada the week before.
While it's true that they're usually pegged for the night matches, don't be surprised to see one or the other playing in the day session for two reasons; to have an attendance draw during the day time and to placate the European TV audience that would be able to see such a match in prime time on the Continent.

A couple of things:

Another movie about a "waaaacky!" wedding scenario?...stick with Transformers. I didn't find Robin Williams funny as a kid. Maybe an adult shouldn't.

Pujols is built almost exactly like McGwire...similar to a Mike Tyson's punchout character. Baseball isn't suspicious?

Brantley is doing his best Harry Carrey routine and I'm eating it up.

I'd say Marty has earned the right to get his snark on. Rather be an Indians fan than candy-coated Jerry Narron/George Grande style 24/7. Doc, anyone ever ask you for a good, positive twist on that 2002 Bengals season?

Doc, great article on Brandon Phillips. Although, I think C. Trent will take you off his Christmas card list now....

Summer movies always suck unless your 13 or so. If you're a little older you go to the drive-in and then who cares about the movie. Plus the popcorn sucks. So stay home, rent "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia", cook up some popcorn, and as we used to hear in Boston, put your feet up and be a Sox watcher.

Your comment on Bear Grylls is absolutely unbelievable. It is the best show I've seen on tv in years! My buddies and I get together to watch it on Friday nights at 9 PM while we pre-game to go out. The things that man will eat and his knowledge of how to survive are incredible!

Your comment on Bear Grylls in Man vs. Wild is completely off base. He's a man's man and a woman's man. If you don't appreciate Bear and his crazy survival tactics, then you are no man. Call me when you scale a 100-ft waterfall with no equipment, catch and skin a rabbit with your bear hands, and build a fire with only what you find in the wild.

Hey, 9:07...
Uh, no.

and re Pujols', um, size: He looks to have shrunk a little this year. Could be the SlimFast.

On Man vs. Wild... Bear Grylls is a man's man and woman's man, and if you don't appreciate his outrageous survival tactics then you are no man. Call me when you climb a 100-ft waterfall with no equipment, catch and skin a rabbit with your bare hands, and then build a fire and hut with only what you find in the wild, all in 30 minutes.

Barry Bonds is nearly 43 & has bad knees. He must be a bad guy (everyone says so), but this criticism of him skipping the home run derby is just piling on. Has anyone his age ever participated?

Also Doc, ironic, that in your article on Brandon Phillips, you seemed upset that Bonds was the face of baseball, yet in your blog you imply that you want to see more of him.

Phillips, by the way, is comparable to Orlando Hudson defensively, has more power & speed, but gets on base far less often, plus the Reds suck. Last place teams seldom get multiple All-Stars. If the team were better, he & Harang probably both make it. Of course, Harang is often overlooked, even in Cincy. He led the NL in wins & Ks last season, got zero Cy Young votes & wasn't even named Reds pitcher of the year. He needs to hire a PR guy.

Yeah, John, I'm as conflicted about Bonds as the next guy... I watch him kinda like I watch a wreck on the road or NASCAR... he's the most compelling american jock now, maybe since Reggie Jackson... and tonight is his night... if a man lives long enough, he gets the face he deserves...baseball's face looks like Buddha Bonds' inflatable noggin... you make a devil-deal with Dr. Longball -- come on down, Big Mac and Sammy! -- you get what you deserve... and I still think that guy in that phony survival show is a dork...

Anyone know how CheviotZoo feels about Man vs. Wild?

Les Stroud of "Survivorman" is the man. Alone, with a camera, for seven days.

He makes Bear look like a second year Boy Scout.

No camera crew to keep him company or safety lines when he's climbing, like Bear.

Paul, funny you should ask about any good movies for grown ups, and then 2 paragraphs later list the Esquire as one of your favorite place you'd miss from here. In fact, there have been quite a few good movies this summer not marketed towards the 13 yr olds. just to name a few I've seen in the last couple of weeks: La Vie En Rose (outstanding Edit Piaf bio-pic); Crazy love (documentary of a NY couple that proves once again that fact is stranger than fiction--you simply can't make up stuff like that!); Once (Damien Rice-like singer's story in Ireland). And all those played where? The Esquire.

Otehr things I'd miss if I left Cincinnati (having lived here now 20 years exactly): the Southgate House in Newport (the best venue for live music in the city); having WOXY.com around the corner (broadcasting from Longworth Hall); Skyline.

Did you quit blogging??? By the way it has been days... but the interview with Kelly was strong.
Do you know what plans the Enquire has for Big East Media day?
