yes we have no passports

Planned vacation to Ireland... supposed to leave Friday for 10 days... hotels, planes, car booked 6 months ago...applied for passports for 2 kids 13 weeks ago...post office guy says, no problem, 6-8 weeks... still waiting... lots of automated phone talk..lots of pressed buttons... lots of hold... lots of talk of expediting and overnighting... no action...actual live human being says passports being processed in New Hampshire... New Hampshire?... tell us go make appointment at Chicago passport office, stand in line for 12 hours... try make appointment... automated line says no appointments available...

very nice effort by G. Bush government...

1st we go to war on false pretense, then we stir up hornet's nest we can't possibly fix...

where is Bin Laden?

we proclaim war on terror by making people traveling to Mexico, Caribbean and Canada acquire passports... don't understand said requirement might swamp passport offices...

then we rescind that requirement, so the people who created the problem in the 1st place can go to mexico, canada and caribbean...

good for them.

meantime, vacation of lifetime is screwed...

now I know why I never voted for a Bush

Paul,
Take it easy buddy. You want to blame everything on the governement, you are sounding a little crazy.
Where is Bin Laden... who cares right now? We haven't had an attack on our home country since 9/11, that is what matters.

Hey... it's hot outside today. Let's blame Bush! It's cold tomorrow. Let's... blame Bush! There's a delay in passport applications... Let's see... ummm... how about... let's blame Bush!!!!

Should've applied for those passports a LONG TIME ago. The delays in passport appications are well known. Oh well... Live big and learn!

Use your big-time media connections and call Rob Portman. Bet he can secure these passports for you this afternoon.

at 11:12 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Give me a break!
I don't care if you don't like the president, but to actaully blame him for your passport problems??!!
I also wonder why the passport issue wouldn't be the very first thing you would do after booking the trip. It is the government after all, and it doesn't matter who's running it!

at 11:12 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Someone sounds a bit bitter...but for apparent good reason(s).

Having gone nowhere outside the United States aside from Tijuana and Toronto, I can't wait until I have to run through the obstacle course and jump through the hoops you're currently encountering.

Especially since a full-blooded Irishman like myself would kill to take a trip to the Emerald Isle.

Hard to believe but Dubya is still apparently 'the man of the hour'in solid, stolid Cincy! And Bin Laden is still running free six years after America's biggest massacre!

at 11:26 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

this one is on you, pd. perhaps you can explain how it is bush's fault that you had 6 months to get this together and decided to call this late in the game. Your lack of accountability on this is surprising.

at 11:37 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The government has been advertising 12 weeks, and you listen to your mailman? Brilliant. With that type of trip, should have paid extra for the Expedited Serivce.

at 11:53 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Same story here for a trip to Canada, so its not so crucial, but.....they sure cashed our $150 worth of checks to pay for the passports.

Doc --

Your situation really stinks. This is a classic case of the people in charge – who are supposed to be smarter -- not being able to see what is plain as day to average folks, that increasing the number of people who need passports without increasing the capacity to handle passports will create a major strain on the system.

If you need a hand with something in Chicago, I’d be happy to help out…don’t have connections or anything, just a former Cincinnatian willing to lend a hand…

Paul: Honestly, blame the guy at the post office who should have told you about the logjam with passports. Don't always blame the man.

at 12:38 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bush or no Bush, the problem is simply that if you are promised a timeframe, and it's missed, there is recourse or remediation unless you're the government. Same goes with balancing the budget and a number of other things.

Oh and an Anti-Bush voter does not a liberal make!

Paul, I'm not a big fan of GW right now but (1) I'll still take him over Al Gore or John Kerry and (2) you are smarter than making a connection between GW and your passport. Act like it.

I really hope you aren't one of those screaming for government run health care either...this is merely a glimpse into the black hole that is government bureaucracy be it Dem or GOP

Come on now Paul. I understand why you are frustrated but are you really going to blame Bush for this? Are you telling me that if John Kerry was in office the passport process would be any more smooth? By the way, can I make a request for the seperation of sports and politics? Two things that should never be mixed

To answer one of your questions:

Bin Laden is probably in Pakistan. I guess from the tone of your question you are suggesting we should put a couple US Army Divisions in Pakistan to hunt him down? Even if we didn't invade Iraq (disaster I agree) this would be impossible.

I have no problem with you slamming Bush for Iraq and even the passports.

I have a big problem with the Democrat/Liberal question about where is Bin Laden when they know the answer and they also know there is not much we can do about it.

Good luck with your passport.

Put your life in perspective Paul!

at 5:12 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The first thought that crossed my mind was "made plane and hotel reservations 6 months ago... applied for passports 13 weeks ago...." Why the heck did you wait so long????????????? I would have applied as soon as I had my reservations made (did that, in fact, for a trip to Europe three years ago).

The State Department is in the process of adding 1100 people to its Consular Operations staff (the people who process passports). They have already added 750 of those folks. But the volume of passport applications went from 1 million a month to almost 2 million a month. No one can be expected to have forseen that.

In the end, you have no one to blame but yourself for the 3-month delay. If you want to blame the President, go ahead.

Hey Paul,

This happened to us! We were taking the kids on a trip and applied for our passports FIVE MONTHS early, and the passports still hadn't arrived the week before we were supposed to leave!
I got stuck in voicemail hell for a solid two hours, then got mad as hell and drove to the Madeira post office, where an unbelievably nice and patient postal employee tracked down somebody with the answers, and got our passports sent to us in 2 days! (I think it helped that I had two kids in full-on meltdown stage with me!)
I'd recommend going to a PO in person and pleading and begging until you get somebody to make a call for you. Also.. didn't the passport rules change recently so that you just need a receipt that shows you've applied, plus a driver's license or birth certificate?
Keep the faith and good luck!

Amen, Paul. I had my first trip out of country -- a trip to London to visit family -- canceled by a longer-than-life delay on my passport. I hate to tell you this, but you should abandon all hope. I got mine nine weeks after my scheduled vacation date.

Tsk, tsk ... it is too bad about your holiday. Of course, the global war on terror does not really exist. Luckily, the new Congress now led by the Democratic party has removed that term from being used, so we really have nothing to worry about. We just need to bring back our troops from Iraq and Afghanistan where they have been attacked by innocent locals outraged by Bush tossing out Saddam and the Taliban. Since there is no war with terror, the Alqueda fighters from different parts of the world really never entered Iraq in the first place. And once we leave Iraq, all we be good with the world since then there will be no one to attack since we are so well isolated by our two oceans. Of course, this would prevent any bad guys from crossing over from Canada or Mexico. So why worry about tightening up the border controls ... we may inconvenience ourselves.

Butterball, you always knew how to stir the pot; kudos to you this is a good one.

Shame on all of you who are slamming him! If you don't agree with someone's politics fine, and if you want to resent someone for having an open forum to express his thoughts then fine. (even though he's kind of earned it) But cut the guy some slack. Passports have always been a 6-8 week process and now because te government is behind this guy's gonna miss his dream vacation. I'd be mad too

A social science experiment

1) Prior to leaving for vacation, post a polarizing political statement.

2) Open up commenting for all readers.

3) Enjoy your respite (unfortunately stateside...but hey the dollar is so weak right now the Ireland trip would cost a small fortune).

4)Upon return, check and see how many comments have been made and pick out some of your favorites for analysis.

PD, liberal or anti-bush, I still enjoy the columns, and the polarizing statements.

Hey, 1232...read the post again. Or, maybe, have someone read it for you. I have a passport. The issue didnt become news until a few weeks ago. Why? Just a random guess... because passport problems werent an issue until a few weeks ago. As for not blaming Bush: Buck Stops Here. That saying was on Truman's Oval Office desk. He was a Democrat.

at 1:43 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Paul,
Anon1232 (or Dan F) here...

I did READ the post, why I types "passports for your family"
I was referring to the news -regarding- the new requirements, not the news that the passports were -backlogged-?. We should have expected the backlog coming. Last year I went to the Bahamas, wifey has no PP, I heard the about req's, and checked and double checked both our State Dept and their travel ministry to make sure. She didn't need one then, but almost got here one anyway, seeing the new reqt's.

I heard PP's for Canada and Mex...said to myself "what a mess that will be". I agree it is a stupid idea and does not foster good relations with our neighbors. I suspect it was added to the Patriot act by some Lobby.

As for the veto..."well its his fault for not vetoing the bill our lawmakers passed anyway?"..whatever happened to the talk about the line item veto anyway?

at 11:27 PM Blogger Scott Evans said...

Paul,

If you truly thought the "Buck stops here" was anything more than a slogan with Truman you really should study the history of the Presidents.

I hope you now realize though that the Federal govt was never setup or intended to be a public service organization as many liberals want it to be and how most conservatives elected have made it. My professor for my last MBA class worked for a govt check processing office in Columbus. No one is truly accountable for where the money goes and the red tape created is rediculous. This is why government ran health care would be a human rights disaster.

As far as Bush's presidency is concerned, he will probably be judged in history somewhere in the middle. Somewhere along the way he forgot how to communicate to the people, even if those reporting the news refuse to write headlines that praise him when he does do something right or has a victory on an issue (such as the diplomatic victory with Russia on missle defense systems).

My opinion on Bush is he was the best canidate both times he ran, in 2000 and 2004. However, he lost all ability to speak English somewhere around 2005. However, your assertion that we went to war under false pretense is also misleading. There were more reasons we went to war other than WMD's. We had been at war with Saddam pretty much since the end of the first Gulf War as he would fire at our planes on a daily basis and violated nearly ever part of the cease fire agreement signed in 1991. That was reason enough right there to goto war. As far execution of the war and most importantly, communicating why it is important for us to fight, we have failed on that front.

Ya know you could always do what C Trent does and require everyone to log in. His blog is very popular despite that and most of the time avoids the anonymous attacks.

Let's place the blame where it belongs, BIG Government...you get what you asked for...and since apparently you voted for Gore and Kerry the last 2 elections, I would assume you'd be happy with the results of BIG Government. Also, how do you know Bin Ladin is still alive? Did Harry Reid tell you or did Nancy Pelosi (the san fransisco treat) go visit him when she recently played "speaker of the state" and met up with our enemies and kissed their behinds? If he is alive, he's hiding in the mountains while motivating gullible morons to go kill themselves for misguided reasons (talk about anonymous bravado) Mike in Fairfield, email available upon request, i'll check back. Hilarious that if you can contact your congressman (or pay to expedite) things seem to work.

The problem, and I DO blame the president for this, in insisting on implementing a program that the government infrastructure was in no way ready to handle.

Similar to the president's insistence on fighting a war the peace for which we were not prepared to establish.

Similar, honestly, to Bingo Bob Castellini's insistence that the Reds "win now" and yet failure to realize the team is in no position to do so without some major overhaul.

That's many Neo Con's for ya, can't see the forest for the trees.

The best part is this is as a result of the Canada/Mexico passport crunch. If you will recall, this is supposedly to protect us from terrorists. Apparently it is so vital that the government decided to allow 9 months or so between the announcement of the requirements and the actual enforcement of the rules.

While I think most Americans should carry passports like the rest of the world, and I don't mind the implementation of this sort of program, couching it in this "war on terror" catch-all and then allowing nine months to implement and fees to expedite is silly.

Wonder how many terrorists slipped into America between the announcement and the implementation?

Let's please not pretend this is about fighting terrorism. Like much else that has gone on since 9/11, terrorism is being used as a cloak to cover true motivations and desires. The people that blindly buy it aren't patriotic, they're sheep.

This man is LESS conservative when it comes to governance than Bill Clinton. If you don't understand that, you don't understand politics.

And I doubt Paul D is a liberal. If you are any sort of regular reader of his, it's fairly obvious he is much more of a Libertarian than anything. As the government, be it Democratic or Republican, continues to erode our rights and the constitution, more and more people will be like Paul.
