Fire Narron?

John Fay suggests this AM that the Reds might fire the manager Monday. Your guess is as good as mine, though I doubt they will. B. Castellini is not blind to the incompetence of his bullpen, and knows that's not his manager's fault. Plus, to fire Narron after extending him a year ago would reflect poorly on ownership.

And there's this: Unless you've got Joe Girardi/Bob Brenly/Ken Macha ready to assume the corner office, what's the point? You bring in B. Hatcher or B. Dent for the rest of the year, so what? Beyond appeasing fans, I mean. And sorry, but no team ever got good listening to its fans about how to run the club.

If you say it'd finally be a show of accountability from a club that has shown exactly none of it to this point, I'd go with that. But it better not stop there. The owner needs to add some strong words about his GM as well. Then he needs to admit that the crux of his first-day message was misguided: There will be a 5-year plan here. Then bodies need to start flying out the door... and if there is a next guy starting Tuesday, he needs to stop loving his players so much, the way Narron has. To say they're not far from being good, or that his everyday players have been busting it, is absolutely ridiculous. Even if it were entirely correct (it's not), that is not what you say about baseball's worst team.

Regardless, Narron's firing would represent nothing more than a half-pound of flesh for those (myself included) who've banged for Doing Something for at least six weeks. It is something, but it's a drop in the bucket.

As much as I may or may not believe in the "pointing fingers", or "do something", game...There are certain things that need time and don't always need to be changed immediately.

Wayne Krivsky was hired in February of last year, promptly made the deal of the decade to this point, and now many are calling for someone's head. Sure, some of the details included in that trade haven't worked out too well. But who could have known the results at the time? While the Reds continue to tread water in the NL Central's basement, there is plenty of pressure being placed on several rookies. The bullpen has been a disaster, to be kind, and is now full of rookies. There has been little to no stability given the injuries and sudden demotions/promotions.

Junior is playing like the late '90s again but I have to give him some sorrow. He deserves to be helping a winner. You won't ever hear him complain much about that, at least publicly, but everyone knows he wants the same. It was very heart-warming to see him find his way back home, but at this point it might be time for him to move on. I'm not one of those that look at Griff and see nothing but injuries. I happen to be a fan of the man and would hate to see him go.

In my best guess and opinion, the Reds brass will most likely wait until the offseason to do anything. The Reds' season is lost at this point, so trying to bring improvement in and help salvage the summer would be pointless. However, if Castellini and crew are willing and able to fork out some dough during the free agent season, things could get interesting.

Doing what is possible to bring in positive clubhouse influences that just happen to be FA's after the season such as Sean Casey (former Red), David Eckstein (former Castellini bedfellow in St. Louis), Chris Reitsma (former Red), Joe Kennedy (versatile starter/reliever), among others, would help make things more interesting. Continue the grooming and growth of Josh Hamilton as a possible replacement for Dunn (a free agent after this season). Saying all that is much easier said than done, but I feel it is simply a better alternative to work out the kinks after October.

As far as Jerry Narron goes, what's the point? That said, what's the point of canning him now? Does ownership think it will be a wake-up call to the players? If something is going to be done, do so in the offseason where it might not rock the boat of the clubhouse further.

But, who am I?

You weigh in on all these blogs more frequently than Steve Howe had relapses...you not only like to weigh in a lot, you like to frequently write quite long entries (kind of self-important, don't you think?)...um...do you work?...let me guess "self-employed" right?

Move out of your parents' basement already and get a job/life.

Mr. Mike Kessler, how necessary was that?

Ever give a thought that (a) I'm a fan of Doc and enjoy "weighing in", as you so eloquently put it, and that (b) sports journalism is a great interest of mine. In fact, I'm going to school for journalism and will some day be employed in the field of sports journalism. I've even already had some experience. Maybe I'm trying to learn a few things here too.

I don't need to defend myself against anyone, so I don't know why I'm trying.

Sorry for my smartass comments; I was in a bad mood the other day, and decided to be a jerk. Good luck to you in your career pursuits.
