What's up w/X?

I'm at the UC game last night... every few minutes, we get printed updates on games around the country. We 're getting Xavier updates, and shaking our heads. Duquesne? Really? Something's wrong here. Really wrong. X starts 2 seniors and 3 juniors. They have 3 players who played big roles in the Elite 8 run 3 years ago. They play in a bad league. They have top 40 talent. They lose at Duquesne and Justin Doellman figures they played pretty well. Is that right?

21 turnovers. 93 points allowed. Say it again: Duquesne.

Please don't tell me how good the Dukes are. They really aren't. Xavier should win that game by 10, just by showing up. When teams with good talent underachieve, the blame has to go to the coach. I like Sean Miller, but I wonder why his most important players havent gotten a lot better in 3 years, and why, as a former point guard, Miller can't get through to Drew Lavender. If this keeps up, even the stoic X fan base will begin grumbling. Miller is a good guy and I know he's wracking his brain trying to reach this bunch. But it ain't working. If things don't pick up, things could get dicey at Cintas Center. Have they ever fired a basketball coach at X?

Has XU ever fired a coach?

Well, back in the early 70's, in the days of Jerry Helmers and Doug Alt, there was a coach named Dick Campbell.

He went 15-37 in two seasons, then disappeared. (fired?/resigned?) Whatever. They were so anxious to get that guy out of town, they hired a UC guy to replace him, Tay Baker.

I remember seeing Dick Campbell a couple of years later running a motel in Pigeon Forge Tennessee. I don't think he ever coach again and I think he died a few years ago.

It is truly amazing, listening to the Cincinnati media, which is hard to avoid here in the Dayton market, when they are surprised by something that they should have seen coming if they would pay attention to the team 45 miles to the north (UD) UD lost to the Dukes about 10 days ago at Pittsburg to the same team on a last second shot. Note to coach Miller: Next time pay attention to what your neighbor A10 team is up to and you may avoid running into a similiar situation.

Paul, have you seen justin Doellman play recently??? You can honestly say you don't think he has progressed??? Really???

It's funny. Xavier has Duke expectations but Duquesne resources. If I were to bet, Miller is in the bottom 1/3 of compenation in the A-10.

Lay of Miller for a bit Xavier fans. In a year you'll bbe throwing a fit when he goes to DePaul, or Pitt, or Iowa, or St. John's, or Miami.

Xavier is 15-7, with an RPI of 52. 52nd best team in the country, out of 320+, & coming off of an NCAA tournament appearence... and a major newspaper reporter hints at the possibility of firing the coach? Is it considered good journalism if comments like this draw reactions from people, even if they are way off base? I miss the good old days when people said what they meant, and were held accountable for their words.

Why was there no mention of "Ocho Cinco's" homicidal tendencies in your book? Why did you gloss over that interesting aspect of his ever-involving personality?

Paul, you wanna see some good college basketball??? I'm not talking about UC, or XU, or Indiana, even UK, Miami of Ohio, or NKU. How bout them Buckeyes?? They're ranked #5 in the country and they have the best freshman center in the last two generations (and it's only 80 minutes from Loveland - WOW! only 85 minutes, Yes!). You wanna live big??? Turn on the Bucks game on Saturday at 4. That's livin big.

Paul:

Some RPI's of note:

6 Ohio St.
7 Kentucky
48 Kansas St.
50 Xavier
62 Dayton
90 Mississippi St.
141 Miami OH
146 Cincinnati

Which program is in the most trouble? (Hint: it ain't XU)

Paul, I couldn't agree more. I can never figure out X fans. One minute it's elite 8 and final 4 here we come, the next it's a 52 RPI ain't all that bad. A 52 RPI means you probably don't make the show unless you win the league tourney. I don't think they spent the money on Cintas with these goals in mind. I've long felt this is an upper class team, with under achieving talent. This is a put up or shut year for Sean Miller. My fear is maybe he was put in the spot a little too early, and needs more seasoning himself. A decent guy, but needs to learn the ropes at a lower level.

Paul: another RPI update!

Through games of Sunday, February 4

5 Ohio St.
6 Kentucky
41 Kansas St.
48 Xavier
61 Louisville
65 Mississippi
70 Dayton

305 Wofford

I see a trend here....

Let's see. The Muskies have the Rhode Island Rams on the table for first place supremacy in A-10. Hopefully, they'll get it done.

A reliable source claims that talk among fellow players, namely the point guards and Ryle grad, includes laughing at Mr. Duncan's work ethic and injuries. I truly hope this backstabbing will cease, and that Joshua rises above the cocky Wolf and plays his heart out. Give em hell Moeller baller!
