A dream debuts

Permit me the occasional self indulgence. Jillian Daugherty is dancing at halftime tonight. Loveland against Somebody. It could be the Lakers, for all I know. Doesn't matter. Jillian is dancing at halftime. What a win for the human spirit.

It isn't just because she is my daughter. OK, maybe it is. But it's also this: She's good at this. She's nearly as good as her teammates, which is remarkable, given she was born with Down Syndrome. Jillian's no charity case. She went to summer dance camp, she has never missed a practice. She spends hours in front of the full-length mirror in her bedroom, practicing.

Too often, we define the lives of people with disabilities by what they can't do. Jillian never got that memo. The last time we were on the Loveland bike trail, we rode 20 miles. If you've ever seen a dance team at a basketball halftime, you know these kids need the bodies of a contortionist and a pro jock's coordination to pull it off. That J. Daugherty can manage this, and manage it nearly as well as "normal'' kids, well, you have no idea how that makes me feel.

They'll be bouncing to Run DMC's version of the Aerosmith tune, Walk This Way. If you're in the mood for a little miracle, come to Loveland HS tonight and check it out. Live extra big, my beautiful little girl. You make me very proud.

Prof,
This is not self-indulgence. For those of us who have followed your columns for years and come to know a little bit about you, Jillian has become a small part of our lives too. Wish I could be there tonight to see her big moment and your beaming face. This will undoubtedly be the best sporting event you have ever covered. Congrats, my friend, and enjoy the moment.

Now you've gone an ruined everything....how can we write in and tell you that you are an ignorant bum who doesn't know anything after you've let us inside your family like that!

Seriously, that's so cool it defies description.

Paul--
I wish I could be there...got Lost in Yonkers tonight...good for Jillian. Good for the Daugherty family.

Didn't send Jillian a class gift this year for her birthday since I don't have a class, per se (I pull and work with individual students this year), but I should tell you it was the favorite thing some of the students I had for consecutive years did. I'm gonna seek out Eddie, Antonio, and a couple others and share this with them. They'll love to hear this update. Need more dads like you, especially down here in the hood.
Your friend,
Nick

As the parents of a beautiful 4-year-old girl with DS, we look forward to each update on your Jillian. They help us to keep dreaming big...as Jillian lives large. Thank you and go Jillian!

Paul-
I met you two years ago at my high school. You mentioned Jillian, and told the students that we should "write about what makes [us] come alive."
This is probably the best advice I've ever gotten. And your story is one that exemplifies a great father. You take pride in Jillian, and yet you don't treat her any different than anyone else- she's your daughter, and that's all that matters. That's an attitude this world needs more of.
Bravo.

Doc,
Thanks for your transparency. It's one of the things which makes appreciating your writing so easy. I commend you for sharing and I'm certain that J did you proud.

Doc, what a great story! I've written to you on several occasions that I almost prefer your "human interest" stories to your normal sports coverage! :-)

We were at the Loveland HS game the previous Friday because my 5th grader got to join the older cheerleaders at halftime. How cool is that? Her whole squad had a great time.

Watching your kids achieve various milestone's in life is such a great thing to see and treasure. I am really enjoying the journey with all three of our kids.

Keep up the great writing!
