Hoss Harang
Spent an hour on the radio last night arguing for my nickname for Aaron Harang. Got a bunch of alternatives from callers. None as good as Hoss, which describes Harang perfectly. He's a horse, he's big, he's got that gentle demeanor Dan Blocker had playing Hoss Cartwright on "Bonanza.''
(Hey, kids: Bonanza was a very popular TV western in the 60s... Google it or something.)
Are you with me? Had my buddy J. Crasnick on last night. He covers MLB for ESPN.com, said Harang is the most underpublicized very good pitcher in the majors. Dude needs a nickname.
Hoss. When he's on Leno, remember you heard it here first.
On another matter: A little taken aback by the strong e-mail criticism of my column this AM re XU's obligation to Drew Lavender. I said X was there for him when he was playing a big role in their Elite 8 run; it needs to be there for him now, after his apprehension last weekend.
It's simple: XU brought DL in knowing he had baggage. he fulfilled his end of the deal, on the court. X needs to do the same. I have little doubt the school will do just that.
Reaction was wholly negative. Drew is 23. Drew should know better. XU has no obligation beyond his scholarship. Don't excuse irresponsible behavior.; Et cetera.
My favorite came from an X employee, who said it seemed I held the school to a higher standard than others. As if there's something wrong with that.
I wonder how many of the folks dumping on Drew now were cheering him wildly a few weeks ago.
60 Comments:
I agree with your point that Xavier should do what they can to help Drew. I just don't know what exactly it is that they might do. They have apparently tried interventions that appear to have been somewhat successful for the short but not the long run. What is it that you suggest they do?
A group of my buddies started to call Aaron, Harangatang. I believe this nickname has spread and should be the fitting nickname for him.
Doc, from a moral standpoint I believe Xavier will do the right thing by Drew. My only reservation is whehter Drew is committed to doing the right things? Repeated negative or anti-social behavior is no excuse for expecting anyone or any institution to maintain unwavering support for anyone. Drew has to man up and do the rights things too and if he legitimately gives it the effort required, this whole thing is nothing but another lesson learned about life. In the end Drew is holding on to some anger and contempt he needs to let go to move on. We're worried (too) about the "little guy" too.
My vote is for "The Hulk." While I like "Hoss" (and, yes, I watched Bonanza back in the day, The Hulk is more of a hero and Harang certainly can be a hero for the Reds. JMO
Harangatang. Period.
Most Reds fans in Chicago affectionately refer to him that way. The man is simple a beast.
Can't wait to see his domination next week against the Baby Bears.
Doc-
I missed your show last night, what were some caller suggestions for Mr. Harang?
You didn't specify what you think they should do for him, so you left people's imaginations to go wild. If you meant they should help him with some counseling that seems appropriate.
I'm going to have to second Harangatang. I guess you could type it this way too - Harang-a-tang. Either one works. Best. Nickname. Ever.
Seriously, why was there a search for Harang's nickname. It has and will always be Harangatang. Open and shut.
As for our Cueto and Volquez and their Dominican descent. I propose a Strikeout Counter in the Bleacher section. However, instead of the typical "K" sign, we should use a "Qué" sign. It would be a funny and unique to Cincinnati and would celebrate one of the more exciting storylines on our team.
RE: Drew Lavender
The sense I got from reading your piece on Xavier and Drew Lavender was that Xavier was quietly somehow not fulfilling its commitment to DL.
My sense obviously did not come from the comments made by Bobinski, which indicated XU is doing all it can for DL, but from the tone and implicit - but unwritten - allegation that Xavier was looking to screw DL over.
After all, why write a column, with a somewhat negative voice, calling on Xavier to "honor its commitment" unless you suspecting they were looking to dump the kid?
I was cheering Chad wildly this season too, before he turned himself into a jackass. People change and do stupid things. No one deserves unconditional support, especially coddled athletes.
Hoss? That's it? Pretty original. Hey, let's nickname a big guy, "Hoss." Might as well call him "Dude" or "Chief." Hoss. Come on, I thought you journalists were supposed to be more creative than that. Hoss. That is lame.
I'm not fully informed on Drew's story. Is there any concern about him not being able to graduate becuase of this incident?
If that is a concern, I would think X has a vested interest in sticking up for him, considering the BB program's pride in graduating thier athletes.
I like Hoss. Just like the Bonanza Hoss picking up a calf and returning it to the ranch. Hoss Harang can carry the Reds on his back.
Harangatang is demeaning- not a positive name at all.
Xavier doesn't really owe Drew Lavender anything, not because he's no longer a member of the team, but because they've already given him so much. Xavier has given him an opportunity to play college basketball and has given him a world-class education worth $17,000 a year, despite all of his baggage. It's not Xavier's job to hold Lavender's hand for the rest of his life as payment of two years of contribution to the Xavier athletic program.
I get so sick of people saying that athletes need more protection and support when they've pretty much been given a free ride through college. If I made a mistake like Drew Lavender did the University would not provide any assistance to me or back me up in any way, much less offer me a scholarship.
Paul, I was a little confused by your story on Lavender. You seemed to be chastising X as if you didn't think they would support him now, but then you quoted X as saying they're committed to supporting him now. It's kind of like telling somebody to "keep up the good work" by telling them "you better not screw up." An odd angle to the story if you ask me.
Couldn't get through last night, not sure if someone came up with it, but how about
HaRANG em up!!!
"Harangatang is demeaning"... Clearly, you are not a tall, stocky man. Nothing is worse than being called "Hoss" for us, I promise. I heard the topic on the radio last night and I changed the channel. It's a silly conversation. Why not call him Aaron, or Harang and let him be our li'l secret who mows down the NL Central and collects all the dubs for the hometown team?
Harangatang >> very imaginative but image of a big ape doesn't work.
Hogan was too much of a cartoon character.
Hoss works and I think he'd be OK with it although probably wouldn't even want a nickname >> not a "big-timer", thankfully.
For all you "Harangutang" geniuses out there, the animal is not an orangutang it's an orangutan. And anybody with a brain doesn't pronounce it with a "tang" either. Figures something like that would emanate from Chicago.
I agree with anonymous 10:28. Bizarre indeed.
I also like Harangatang. But isn't Harangutan a more accurate spelling?
Also, this is neither a nickname nor original, but I like the cheer, "Hip Hip, Harang!"
I think Harang's nickname should be...Joe Blanton!
“Give me a break! I’m special!” That song just doesn’t play well anymore.
Did XU take Mr. Lavender to the bar? Where fans sitting there screaming “drink, drink, drink”? Was Coach Miller riding in the back seat of the car telling Drew “don’t move out of this intersection until I say so”?
XU could teach a valuable lesson here. Every individual is responsible for their own actions and the consequences that come with those actions. It’s a shame that a 23 year old man hasn’t learned that lesson yet.
Mr. Lavender, you’re on your own!
Paul,
I read your articles from time to time and more often than not find myself scratching my head. What was the point of yesterdays article about Drew Lavander? Should Xavier help the kid? Yes! Will Xavier help the kid? Yes! Why even write such an article? The bottom line is Xavier can't reprogram Drews mind... The kid needs to help himself.
I have been around Xavier basketball my entire life and have had a rather unique perspective as to how the program works. Xavier changes a lot of these athletes lives in a way that no other university can. This is 100% attributed to Sister Rose and the overall commitment of athletic department to do everything it can to make athletes better people the day they leave Xavier compared to the day they arrived. Believe it or not Xavier has accomplished that
mission with the vast majority of it's basketball players. Of course there are exceptions such as; DeJuan Rose, Llyod Price and Dedrick Finn. What did all these players in common? They were all unwilling to commit themselves to improving their own lives.
So Doc, before you preemptively set the framework for bashing an institution that turns it's back on it's players. Let's remember one thing. Xavier is one of the few universities left that takes the term "student athlete" seriously. T
Let's be honest here... Drew was arrested for a misdermeanor offense. And if being drunk and smoking weed were the sign of an awful person, a lot of us wood be going to hell. By no means am I approving of what Drew did. But this isn't manslaughter or tieing your roommate up and putting cigs out on his chest. Before we start writing articles about what is X going to do for Drew. Let's see what Drew is going to do for Drew. Xavier will be waiting with open arms if he decides he wants to change.
Harangatang is much better than Hoss Harang.
11:49,
Thanks for saving me the time. I'm with you 100%.
Ah, leave it to 11:49 to try to change the subject. "Hey, look at UC!" Speaking of manslaughter, where's X's old point guard, Andre Smith?
UC has certainly had their share of players with legal issues, but if it's such a huge deal there, shouldn't it be an equally huge deal at X?
11:08-
Alternate pronounciations from dictionary.com: o·rang-u·tan, o·rang·u·tang, o·rang-ou·tang
All equally correct. Please stand corrected.
Hurangatang.
I know it is spelled without the "G" and i dont care.
I cant believe anybody would ever argue over nicknames when the man already has one. Its hurangatang. Period. I am dissapointed Doc. To think... Hoss? Perfectly descriptive of his style ill give you that, but It is Harangatang!
All joking aside though. It already was, is, and will be Hurangatang.
Carson Palmer will win the NL Cy Young (just saying)
Mike from the Oakland A's
10:22 AM Chris, just a minor point of correction but a full-time student on campus probably is paying near $30,000 a year, not $17,000. And an athlete probably has some perks everyday students don't get!
Hoss works for me. What I would really like is to have the Public Address system crank up "Johnny B. Goode" by Chuck Berry in tribute to Johhny Cueto. 40,000 fans chant/singing "Go!..Go Johnny Go! Go! would be quite a spectacle, IMO
As for the Lavender thing? Don't expect too many people around here to behave rationally in the face of evidence that the demon weed has been partaken of. Or to forgive any human weakness other than perhaps greed. It ain't happening. Pat
'Harangatang' has been his nickname since he got here (probably longer than that) and always will be.
Go blacktop your front yard or stand out there and chase deer or something. Nicknames are a spontaneous thing, not something that you sit around a try to conjure up when you don't have a worthwhile topic to talk about.
St CSA
Doc
I'm sure you're boy, Adam out in left, already has a nickname for him.
Are you guys on speaking terms?
Next time you talk to him, let him know your bloggers need some help.
Also, please ask him the correct pronounciation of "Orangutan", so we can lay that to rest.
Thanks,
Mike
At the 11:08 Anonymous "tan not tang" elitist:
Please step off the soapbox. Had it occured to you that Harangatang, with the "g" on the end, sounds significantly better than Harangatan. Isn't the sound of the nickname the all-important factor?
Let's please leave the etymology of apes out of a baseball discussion.
It is obvious that X should be there for Drew and the assumption is that they will be.
It is up to Drew to accept their help.
On Drew "The Kid" Lavender: I think your article gave ample room for X to comment. The kid messed up in a way many many college kids mess up but he also helps the school earn millions of dollars. I think X showed they understand that. Heck, I'd even argue UC does too.
On Harang: Hoss works (my kids has the same nickname on his BB team) but it's kind of generic. Haranga tang makes no sense.
How about BoomHarang? Too ESPN?
Doc,
Gary Coleman, child star of "Diffr'nt Strokes" was an adopted child. His adoptive parents were greatly enriched by him, even though he had a serious illness during childhood that required transplants and regular dialysis. After coming of age, he sued his parents for his approximately 8 million dollars, claiming mismanagement.
He won his suit and the money that enriched them but was earned by him during his childhood.
Whose money was it and why?
What ethical (not legal) responsibility did his adoptive parents incur by adopting a child with a chronic illness and why?
Should he have had to sue?
What is his responsibility to his parents?
While this parallel only touches on the Lavender case at a few points (no parallel is perfect), answers to the questions just might relate to the Lavender/Xavier relationship.
Doc-
If I ever hear Leno call Aaron Harang, Hoss, I'll fly you to The Masters...
Mike
Cueto and Volquez = Thunder and Lightning
11:08 obviosly doesn't have a clue as to what a Harangatang is. Never heard of an 'Orange U Tan'. Is it some kind of a tanning salon?
Doc,
You wanna know something else that's funny? In 1974, the great Charlie Rich won the award for Country Musician of the Year. Do you know who he had to hand the award over to in 1975? Mr. Sunshine-on-my- -Shoulders John Denver. I'll be damaged if Mr. Rich didn't take out his cigarette lighter and light the award on fire right there in front of everyone.
Same as the Drew situation...
Simply "Truck"
I like Truck, Not as much as Hoss. Pass me a Keystone Light.
PDaug, when you mix 2 completely different subjects in one blog, it can get very confusing (especially for us "more mature" guys).
Lots of good suggestions here (aside from arguing the spelling?!). Let's just ask "the Man" his preference? Guessing Aaron'll say "What?" He's too cool.
Alliterative "Hoss Harang" is still leading!
I vote for Harang-a-tang
Its catchy...
Its unique...
It plays on his last name...
It works.
Doc,
So I'm a little confused regarding Lavender.
Just because Xavier knew Lavender "had baggage" when they brought him in doesn't mean they owe him anything if he then displays bad behavior and breaks the law. They gave him $35,000 a year in free tuition and the OPPORTUNITY to restore his image and as you would put it "a forum to display his skills".
I also recall you writing recently in disgust that "If it's tournament time, someone is writing about college basketball players being used...I tend to get a little worked up about this, one because it's a cliche and two, because I've known too many college kids not on scholarship working very very hard away from the classroom, who still have mounds of debt when they graduate...Personal responsibility matters. Except now, when we tend to blame others for everything unfortunate that happens to us."
Those are your words. XU owes Lavender nothing. Now it would be nice if they helped the kid out. And they likely will. But you imply they used him which is why they owe him now. But in that previous article, you said exactly the opposite. That a player gets a free ride, a forum to display his skills, tutors, etc. So which is it?
Just because you give a kid $150,000 in free tuition to play basketball and they then break every law possible after the season doesn't mean the university owes them anything. What if this had happened 2 yaers from now? Do they owe him because he helped them get to an Elite 8. If I go out and rob a bank tomorrow should my employer step up and do all that they can because I helped them reach their revenue goals for 2007?
I thought you cared about personal reponsibility Doc. XU owes Lavender nothing but will help him out. As for you, which is it? Are players being used or aren't they? Does personal responsibility matter or doesn't it?
Hoss Harang is just too boring. I know the guy is maybe the most boring player on the team and the guy who could care less about what people call him, but "Hoss" just doesn't do the man any justice. The nickname Harangatang did not originate in Chicago, trust me Chi-town your not that smart. Anyways, its the perfect name for the man. I mean have you looked at him, I've never seen another human with a face that looks more like a Orangutan. On top of that he is 6 feet 7 inches, he's a big animal. Come'on Doc, you have to see that "The Harangatanger" is the best name, and even if you don't see how perfect it is, your Hoss name will never stick b/c everyone already calls him Harantang.
It evidently doesn't take much Keystone Light to destroy brain cells.
ST CSA
why, did you have some?
11:07
Hyperbole sometimes help illustrate a point but when you describe a college kid getting drunk with the words "...and they then break every law possible.." you undermine your credibility.
CSA, you live in Cheviot right? Isn't your front yard already blacktop...
Absolutely, I paved it years ago. You still cut grass and pull weeds?
St CSA
Seems strange so many (or at least 1 CSA posting under multiple names as always) posters claim Harangatang as his already universally accepted nickname when it's never appeared anywhere but here??!
I'm open to correction... verifiable source please?
And oh BTW, I doubt Aaron'd be thrilled being called an ape. He's no George Clooney but jeez .. give him a break.
This Reds team is beyond pathetic. EE needs to be traded talent yes, but he hasn't put it together, Dunn is just a strikeout machine. And I still say Dusty is a horrible manager for the REDS. We can't hit for nothing. Ah yeah Dusty don't want the bases clogged. This is 6th or at best 5th place crappy same ole Reds team we have seen for the last 7 years.
1:28 >> "CSA, you live in Cheviot right? Isn't your front yard already blacktop..."
CSA doesn't do nuances - he thought you complimented him.
Doubt he understood PDaug's 9:13 either.
CSA, the Art blog could use some of your insight.
Paul, Very frustrating game (again) last night!! I Strongly feel as long as we have Dunn & Griffey, this will not change. Both are dumb, soft, lazy, and play only for themselves, they are big negatives to team success !! I blame Cluless Krivsky....WAKE UP CINCY FIRE KRIVSKY
what does wayne have to do with your perception that dunn and junior are sloths?
Paul, WK has failed to move Dunn & Griffey !!He has allowed the team to center around two guys who are not the answer to winning games !! We have a very disfuctional group...and what happened to our man CANTU,a much needed rh hitter !! We must all realize we have only gotten worse with CLueless...WAKE UP CINCY FIRE KRIVSKY
If I can count, there are 6 other guys on the team (minus the pitcher) that hold a bat on this team, too. Hatterberg isn't hitting like he usually does, EE is never consistant (2 games he has changed but would you take a hit to clear those loaded bases last night?) I agree Dunn isn't doing the part, I feel he has always been terribly slow in LF- but the other guys have to step up too.
For once the pitching is actually decent and we stop hitting home runs.
