Monday Morning at the Three-Dot Lounge

Great championship game tonight... 2 coaches with brains enough to let their players play... seems simple: You recruit them, you sign them, you teach them, you trust them. So how come college coaches all want to play puppeteers? Calipari and Self are among the few that don't. Memphis wins if Memphis plays the way it has the last few weeks...

Why do we give pro athletes credit for not getting in trouble with the cops? Is the bar that low now? Does your boss ever say to you, "Great job, you havent been arrested lately?''...

Props to Krivsky... Trades a no-name minor league pitcher for Keppinger... gets Burton in Rule 5... Exchanges a bad, old LH specialist (Stanton) for a good, old LH specialist (Mercker) with Castellini's help... gets Mike Lincoln for nothing...

UCLA picked Xavier to play its only solid game of the tournament. If Collison played v. X the way he did v. Memphis, maybe Xavier makes it to San Antonio...

Sean Miller last Thursday on SportsTalk picked Memphis to win it all. Mick Cronin picked UNC...

Gale Sayers on SportsTalk tonight... sayers among the best running backs ever, kids. Might have been The Best, were it not for 2 blown knees...

Careful Doc - giving Krivksy credit for anything brings out the crazies.

That said, you're right. Krivsky's one of MLB's best bargain hunters.

The Amazing Krivsky is terrible. Jocketty is not here because Krivsky is doing a great job. Who signed the bad old LH specialist for 3.5 Mil in the first place?

Why are the Reds paying Ryan Freel 4 mil? Who signed Cormier, Hammond, Saarloos, Santos, Lohse, Sun Wo Kim, Ho Che Min, Burns, Stone, Estaban Yan, Majewski, Joe Mays, amongst others? Not to mention David Ross at I believe 3 mil this season, Alex Gonzalez for big bucks (won't crucify him for that one quite yet, but he looks to be a big bust)?

If the Reds do not win this season, Mr Personality will be out of here.

Your comments about the Reds opening the season in Florida, show just about how much you know about baseball. I guess thats why you write excessively about the Bengals soap opera during baseball season.

I am surprised that Lord Mick didn't pick UC to win it all. Of course they would have if it hadn't been for this, that and the other.

Paul,

Great Blog. Too bad a few bad apples like the CSA charactor add nothing but an ignorant negativity towards all people and topics.
In sports as well as in life few things are as good or as bad as they seem. The lunatic fringe folks like CSA live on the extremes and will always say otherwise. What sad little people.

How about Krivsky basically paying 50k for Hamilton, turning Hamilton into Volquez? Best deal ever.

St. CSA,
First of all, you really need a life (or Job). You are always the first one to comment with something negative on any number of blogs. Second, If you really are that negative and not just trying to get the townies fired up, go find a quiet place and smoke the business end of a 45. We'll all be better for it

Thanks,
The Plain Truth

I agree this should be a great championship game. But what coaches are you talking about that are puppeteers? In the back of your mind, you still have to wonder if the free throw shooting will bite Memphis in the rear. I know they have done well so far in the tounry, but clutch games bring out the worst in some and best in others. I think Derrick Rose has increased his stock quite a bit and he should be the #2 pick behind Beasley in the NBA draft.

When I get arrested it doesn't make the news and doesn't do harm to my company. Pro athletes are on a different level of scrutiny and you should know that.

Yes, nice work on Krivsky. The Reds are rounding out and look to have some nice young talent that should keep this team competitive for years. Cueto, Volquez and Bailey should all be good starters and the sooner they are able to join Harang, the better that staff looks. Then adding Bruce and Votto to that young mix along with the other young fellas like Phillips, EE and Keppinger should be nice. The big weak link this year looks to be at the catcher spot. Lets see what Krivsky can pull off there.

I completely agree about the Xavier game and UCLA. On Saturday UCLA looked little like they did against Xavier and it had little to do with Memphis. UCLA had several unforced errors:
- Keefe letting a rebound go off his hands and out of bounds
- an inbounds pass that were off there own players foot and out of bounds
- dumb fouls
- Mbah a Moute losing the ball off his hands and out of bounds

The bottom line was that Westbrook was the only one to show up and play.

I'll give Sayers the #2 spot. Sanders is #1.

I left out that The Amazing Krivsky is also the guy who gave Bronson Aroyyo a huge contract after one good season. This guy is another dud and will be impossible to move with that big contract.

Do you think Castellini likes paying all this money to a bunch of non contributors?

So Mick picked UNC. Is that right? He's about as correct there as he usually is about basketball. Here's a little ditty about Mick and the condition of UC BB today:

Mick Lovers' Song of BB Hope

Hello, my name is Nippin' Nick
And my hero is Sippin' Mick
If he gets UC to the Big Dance
Finally they'll have a chance.

The greatest coach you'll ever see
East or West of the Mississippi
With countless fans left and right
He'll fill Fifth Third every night.

Mick Lovers rally to his defense
Whenever Mick Dislikers pose a test
They say, Mick needs time you see
He'll have the ship right by 2023!

Wondering how much Jocketty is influencing things vs. Krivsky?
Any sensible insights?
One observation >> if you want to tear someone down (Mick, Doc, Huggie, Kriv, Pete, etc), it's easy to do - just pick your own sound-bites (kinda like W on Iraq, but I stray).
Wouldn't it be cool (& much more fun) if we just posted balanced facts?

Please take it easy on CSA - not sure what his problem is ... but responding to him >> is only encouraging him. I surely don't don't need any more of him.

Can't we make this a fun blog (as PDaug intended)?

Somehow, at least in Cincinnati, we measure success by how much or how little the Reds pay for a player. I thought success in sports was measured by wins and losses. Hopefully, the Reds win more than they lose this year. If not, who really cares how many bargains they got!

If Dusty Baker sits Keppinger when Gonzales returns, I will curse his name and slap his children, should I meet them in the street. Keppinger is what we all hoped Freel would be. Someone who tries hard and produces results. Besides Griffey, he has the sweetest swing on the team. And he's a better defensive shortstop than Gonzales. Don't deny it, even his range numbers are almost equal to Gonzo's. Put Gonzo at third and drop Edwin to Lousiville for some more practice.

CSa why do you keep giving Cheviot a bad name?

at 7:22 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Krivsky's made his share of mistakes - so has every GM. Risk is part of investing. I'd take this team over the one Krivsky inherited any day of the week.

"Man, that Theo Epstein's an idiot...what was he thinking trading for Eric Gagne and paying JD Drew $14 million last year?"

But in fairness - send Bob Castellini a resume. If Krivsky's that big a fool, snagging his job should be easy.

72 and 90 tells you how good a job Krivsky did. Reds have played 7 games this year. After 162, we will all know how great The Amazing Krivsky really is. Won't we?

I'm not a Krivsky fan, but I acknowledge that he has made some wonderful moves. He has also made some awful decisions. The bottom line is wins, well actually it's money, but the point being if the Reds fail to finish above .500 this year Mr. Krivsky will not be back.

I hope he's back, but I'm not convinced he's got everything it takes to build a winner.

Doc
I don't like college coaches who over coach. But, last night they should have called a time out before the last KU posession and planned to foul to avoid the 3 point shot. Memphis went brain dead in the last 2 minutes from the coach on down.

at 10:34 AM Blogger Anonymous said...

Hey i personally think that Krivsky is doing a mighty fine job. (please dont tell CSA i said that, He might put me in my place) Im sure we can all do a five minute google search and name drop quite a few names from other organizations with much higher saleries that have signed a few busts. (to think, only the reds put people through what we go through) Like REdleggs in Colorado (who ironicaly never comments on the reds) CSA, the timing is just off. You dropped a bunch of names that are no longer with us. We actually got a deal out of a few of them. Point being, Why complain now? We actually have a starting line up as far as pitching (so arroyo had a bad game or two) and a bullpen that went from the worst in the league to one of the top in its class. We obviously have offense and that all adds up to a fairly well rounded team. All thanks to Krivsky. I think that anybody that knows Sports (not just baseball) understands that team building takes time. We have had bumps in the pitching rotation but look what we have now (we have waited). We took our terrible bullpen and fixed it. What else do you want? Cheviot (i took the sports authority out because you obviously havent earned that nickname you gave yourself) when someone in life has wronged you and then fixed it you might say "forgiven, not forgoten", but not in sports other wise we should harp on every other world series we havent gone to (i am sorry but that outways the ones we went to by a lot). Life sucks, wear a helmet and stick behind your team when they do well. Sports has evolved to much into a now thing. I understand we have gone through 6,7,8 losing seasons? (i hope your not a bengals fan) but now we have something thanks to krivsky! Give him some credit (paul brown would have taken all of your credit).

Carson Palmer will be MVP (oh yeah, football is frowned upon during baseball season, sorry)
(please piont out spelling errors, we are all trying to become writers)
