Opening Day
I've always thought it was more pageant than baseball. You see people on OD you don't see the rest of the year, media included. Growing up in DC with the bad Senators, nobody I knew took the proverbial transistor radio to school, or blew school off entirely to go to the game. What the Redskins were doing was more important.
What about you? How special is today? Is it more the feelgood of tradition, of going to the game with dad and maybe now taking your kid(s)? Is Opening Day as much a state of mind as a ballgame? Why do you go? After today, how often will you go back?
For the first time since Junior's first year, you can look at this club and see potential. I still say the Reds are a year away. J. Votto isnt starting, J. Bruce isnt here. Neither is H. Bailey. Cueto and Volquez are, but about rookie pitchers you just don't know. It's a season-long shakedown cruise. That doesnt mean it won't be compelling, watching justifiably good prospects bloom or wither. And given the lousy-ness of the Central, a team close to .500 should keep us amused through Labor Day.
Anyway, share a few words about what makes OD special, if you like.

Opening Day is like Spring. It is a fresh start, year after year, whether we deserve it or not. It fills the Hope glass to the top again.
Will the Reds win the World Series? Most likely not. Will they get to the playoffs. Maybe. Should we see some much improved professional baseball this season. Definitely. Let's enjoy the ride that every major league team provides, even if the ride ends the way most of the other team's does, right? Go Reds!
I'm glad they've started going with the young players, a new coach, and a few new hires. The truth is that I was tired of the old. If any of them had been that valuable, the Reds wouldn't have been in the state they were in at the end of last year.
Sometimes it's good to ask yourself, "If I got to build a team from scratch from good (not great) players, which of last year's Reds would I insist be on my team?"
This is my *first* opening day! For more than any other reason, I'm going to see the tribute to Joe.
I hope I can find a parking spot :-)
Randy.
It means many fond memories of my father who i lost way to early. I long to be able to watch the game with him. Go Reds!
This is my favorite sports time of the year. Three weeks of March Madness, opening day and the Masters. For me, it's just the sign that spring is here and the weather will start to warm up.
I live in Key West so attending Opening Day is not an option for me but neither do I have to wait for the warm weather so I completely understand the excitement for the coming spring and all that it portends. Of course I would give up all the beautiful winter days down here to be sitting in the rain of Cincinnati watching the Reds get another year started. Not to wax poetic but OD symbolizes a rebirth and another start to the best time of the year in Cincinnati. Enjoy the game and hey, it's not rain, it's liquid sunshine!!
What makes it special for me?
The snow.
It's the only time of the when the snowball replaces the spitball.
I always enjoy the first Businessman's Special day game more than opening day. For some reason there's always less chance of rain.
Well before MLB's bastardization of what OD is supposed to be, (games in Japan and on Sunday night) it is/was about tradition and pride. The nasty Nati is alot of things, but it's biggest calling card is pride. We love the reds, most true fans would cut of a small toe to see another season like 1990 or anything that resembles the mid-70's. I was 7 years old in '90 and painted my grandma's broom red b/c of the WS sweep. Those are the memories that bring me back to a cold rainy ballpark in March. The hope that now that I'm in my 20's I can see a winning baseball team from game one to ticker-tape parade.
