Huggins, Xavier and UC fans

Something that B. Huggins doesnt get enough credit for: Taking the WVU team he inherited and not making wholesale philosophical changes, at least on offense. He liked the way Beilein's players passed the ball, how unselfish they were and how they thought the game. All Huggins did was give them a little more freedom, ask them to run fewer sets. Smart move, given the talent on hand.

On the other hand, R. Majerus had a tough year at St. Lou, because he tried to coach the talent on hand into playing his way.

Huggins has also worked some familiar Big Man magic, turning 6-9 perimeter player Joe Alexander into a guy who can play tough close to the basket as well. Alexander is a very difficult matchup. Derrick Brown might get the assignment Thursday.. Brown had a terrific weekend, providing offense v. Georgia and defense v. Purdue.

Now, a question: If you are a hardcore Huggins fan from his UC days, does it get much better than Thursday's game? Root for Huggs and against X: How great is that? Lemme hear from you.

Lots of animosity, still, over XU's success. How come?

This game, for me, will be a win-win. While I was always a UC fan first, there was only one game per year that I actively rooted against X.

If Huggs can beat X, I will be happy. If X moves on the the Elite 8, I, again, will be happy.

The only real shame is that it's not UC that Huggs can knock out of the tourney, but, shoot, at this point, and I like Mick, it may well be 4 or 5 years before UC sniffs the big dance, if even then.

I just hope that it's a great game, and not a blow out in either direction.

One thing Huggins didn't teach his team this year is how to keep their mouth shut. What an embarrasing post game scene, with several players ripping into Duke and its players. I'll be the first to say I don't like Duke, but don't disrespect Coach K and the program he's built. Have some class.

Speaking of class, Xavier beat a very good Purdue team this weekend. Can't understand the negative attitude people have with them.

I'm a UC Fan, and I'll be pulling for home town over old coach. I want X to win, and I think they will.

That's not to say that I don't like Huggins, because I do. I'm among those who believe the UC leadership showed historically poor judgment in how they administered the Huggins case, the basketball program, the hiring of a new coach. (If it's true that Kennedy was offered the job, if he renounced Huggins, then I'd say that someone in the leadership had an emotional screw loose.)

Long time UC fan here. There's lots of animosity, all right. But most of what some of us have is directed toward the UC BOT and Nancy Z. for decimating the BB program and bringing us a pretend team with a pretend coach. Even as ignorantly as Indiana and Myles B. conspired to unseat Bobby Knight, their fiasco pales in comparison to the bungling of the Huggins' situation. That leaves us with a sour attitude knowing that we have an inferior team with a substandard coach. And some of us aren't blinded by all of the excuses that the current UC coach spews out. Until we're really back, the animosity will continue and by some, directed away from where it should be directed, namely, the UC BOT and Nancy Z.

Perhaps another thing that annoys some about X, is all the fans they now have all of a sudden. Probably ten houses in my neighborhood are now flying brand new X flags, and the number of X sweatshirts and hats I've seen is nearing the all time high of when they played Duke a few years back in the tourney. Then again, maybe this is more of a comment on the typicaly Cincinnati area sports fan than X. A program can't help the bandwagon affect. And maybe, with it being Monday, I just feel like I have to be negative.

Hardcore Huggins fan?
He didn't do anything at UC in his last 12 years there. Except 12 oz. curls.

XU animosity? Heck no. Those guys are great. Good luck Muskies!

My question is: why is there so much Buckeye animosity when the fall rolls around?

at 9:19 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Paul - Huggs has done an outstanding job with the Mountaineers in adapting his style to his players skills. Alexander is impressive.

W.Va. matched up well with Duke, but still, 5 of BE teams no longer in tourney and Huggs team is.

You can bet there'll be a lot of Bearcat fans rooting for W.Va. and against the home town team/Xavier in their Thurs. game.

Not surprising in that when Kansas St. played Muskies two yrs ago at US Bank about 40% of crowd were Huggs/UC fans pulling for KSU.

Huggs definitely has mellowed and just hope he doesn't wear that Mustard Yellow leisure suit he wore in the Georgetown game some time ago.

Should be a very good game. I'll be rooting for X and think they'll prevail.

Doc, Dustin Dow is asking the same question on the NCAA Board. I will post the same thing here I posted there. I have been a UC fan as long as I can remember.

Huggins coaching at WVU doesn't factor in to my decision. Normally, I would be rooting for WVU, since they play in the Big East, the same conference as "my team."

However, they are playing the other hometown team. Not quite the same as playing "my team," but close. I will be rooting for X.

Same reason UC fans get upset about Ohio State football...they feel like the red-headed step-child lately and it makes them look childish and immature.

UC has a strong history and tradition and can stand up on its own. You guys need to get over yourselves and realize that success at OSU, UC, and XU is not mutually exclusive.

Don't forget the Louisville-Tenn. game. As a UK fan, do I pull for the SEC and Chris Lofton from Maysville, or do I root for the in state school coached by Pitino?

at 11:08 AM Blogger Kantspelwrite said...

I think Huggins is better off at WVU than anywhere else at this stage in his career. He even looks more relaxed and seems to be less upset with officials and players than he did at UC and KSU. He has done a very good job of teaching his players defense and letting them play though some mistakes instead of using the quick hook like he did at UC and KSU.

Xavier is a talented TEAM and Coach Miller has done an outstanding job of coaching the physical as well as mental part of the game to the XU players. Their experience, poise, and teamwork shows on the floor and has resulted in a bundle of wins and national respect for the program.

I predict a Xavier win, 72-69.

This should be a fun and entertaining game and I'd give the edge to Huggs in this game. I think he has that team hustling and playing Huggins sytle ball. It is a real shame to see him having so much successful with a semi-talented WVU team, while the hometown Bearcats struggle.

Doc, consider the olive branch extended. XU could use a few more fans, regardless of school affiliation. I'm an XU alum, and still a Bearcat football fan. Support your local schools, period. Especially ones that epitomize TEAM on every level, like XU basketball and UC football. They bring positive exposure to this city.

For me, it's XU! I like Miller's style and the way he inspired his team at halftime during the Georgia game. I was hoping Butler would pull off the upset last night so that 2 of Matta's former programs would be in the sweet sixteen.

What is it about "rivalry" that you don't understand?

Did Reds fans root for the Dodgers when LA was in the World Series, back in the 70s?

Do Ohio State fans root for Michigan when the Wolverines are in the Rose Bowl?

Do Bengals fans root for the Browns? If the Bengals ever manage to make it to the Super Bowl (stop laughing, it's purely hypothetical), will Steelers and Browns fans root for them?

When a team is considered a rival, you generally want to see that team lose, almost all the time.

1137, Krivsky's rating is still on hold with me. I want to see what this year brings. I'm predicting a real shot at the central. Dusty Baker is a good pick up, and his competition at every position attitude is a great approach. This year's pitching rotation looks like it might be much stronger than last year's, and there's no doubt that the bullpen is stronger. The issue in my mind is this: Jay Bruce was supposed to replace Josh Hamilton's firepower. Since it appears that Bruce is going to Louisville, then will Volquez's starts counter-balance Hamilton's hitting? If we break even on that, then the rest of the team looks stronger to me.

As a UC fan I am rooting for WVU, the Big East and Huggs. Huggs should leave a ticket for Zimpher at will call. Generally I don't root against X but this is an easy call. The other item of note is Burrel and his less than classy tirade about which players made first and second team A-10. That stuff really turns people off.

at 5:12 PM Blogger JerBear said...

Huggins is in the perfect situation...he inherited a team with great offensive ability and smart players and added his tough man-to-man defense. They are a unique team to watch from what I've seen.

It always seemed like Huggins wasn't greatest teacher of the offensive side of the ball. Of course, hardly anyone has been as successful over the last few years as John Beilien in forming great offenseive teams.

I'm rooting for Xavier by the way! I was a big UC fan for a long time but also have rooted for Xavier. So I guess I'm not the normal fan in that regard when it comes to UC/Xavier/Huggins etc.

at 6:14 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

First of all, post 1:52 - WOW .. that's all I can say.

I'm a huge XU fan, have been my entire life. Not a big Huggs fan and not just because of his time with UC. I think he's a very good and very smart coach and I respect him for that, I just find him rather annoying. However, I do root for UC when they aren't playing X and my reasons are simple.

Of course I want to demolish them come Crosstown Shootout time, but whether X wins or loses, the better UC does, the better X's strength of schedule. Also, since they aren't in the same conference, they aren't competing for the conference title, which means that where their schedule is strengthening is in its non-conference area.

I understand what 12:15 is saying about rivalries, because no, I would NEVER root for the Cubs, Cardinals or Steelers.... EVER (well, unless it somehow helps us). So I guess I'm just selfish. But, when UC has been in the tourney and not X, I root for them because they are hometown and I love my city.

GO MUSKIES!

Huggs and X in the Sweet 16, can everyone who cared about UC basketball pre-Zimpher whiff the sweet irony of this matchup? I am a UC Grad and despise X. You put Michigan's campus 3 miles from OSU and do you think their fans would really pull for their rival. I guess if you never went to either school you would give the old line "Gee, I am going to pull for the local school" garbage. Anyone that went to either X or UC during the basketball glory rival years will tell you the same thing. The fun of the rivalry is rooting against the other no matter what. I have not cared about basketball in 3 years since Huggy Bear left but you can bet I will be watching this week praying he humbles X and I can gloat proudly once again! Heck for the last 3 years I actually talked to X alums and was friendly to them. I sensed they missed the Man as well-guess that's why they played K State and will be playing WVU over the next couple of years, huh?

Viva La Huggs-Nancy you starting to feel silly yet? My diploma was good before Huggy Bear arrived on campus and it never had anything to do with a sports program!

I'm not from here, so I root for XU and UC, and I like Huggins too. I'm hoping for a good game.

On the other hand, I"m a Michigan alumnae and I do root for OSU when they're playing in a big game, like the Rose Bowl or the national championship. Not every fan is a neanderthal.

at 9:02 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Steve in Kenwood... you obviously don't understand my point. I don't root for UC because I like them or I can't find a winning team. If all I was doing was looking for a winning team you can bet I wouldn't be looking to Clifton (eliminated in the first round of the CBI, that's something to cheer about!)

I've been an X fan my entire life. I root for UC when we aren't playing them because the better they do, the better our strength of schedule. You understand how that works right?

My "WOW," in reference to your previous comment, was not about you liking Huggins, that is fine; it was about your grammar. I mean, one sentence and three misspelled words, that's what I find incredible. Your second comment gets the same reaction.

I would say that I root for anything that makes Zimpher look ridiculous. But then I catch myself, She does a great job of that on her own.

It would be extremely fickle of UC fans if they were to "hate" Huggins after all the years of basketball excellence he provided this city.

It would be like turning against Lou Pinella, who is still coaching. Lou had some rough edges, but he was also a winner for the most part.

Of course Cincy is going to be positive about Bob Huggins.

I can say in the same breath BOTH that I'm for the hometown team, and that I support Huggins. If he wins, I certainly wish him well. (To me, his success at both K-State and at WV are additional indications that the UC administration made a big error.)

The man can flat out coach. I think he loses on Thursday, though. XU's defense will shut down his 3-point shooters.

To respond to a few of these comments:

As an XU fan, I have been wearing my XU gear every day over this last weekend...I usually just wear it on game days. Sure X fans are more visible now (flags, etc.)...we're in the Sweet 16.

In terms of 'not rooting for a rival', the UC/XU rivalry is geographic and that is it. It is NOTHING like Bengals/Squeelers; OSU/Michigan; Duke/UNC, etc...Those are all conference or division rivalries where the outcomes of the games actually mean something. The bitterness of those rivalries is bred due to the significance of the games.

The Crosstown Shootout is great for bragging rights-but that is really it. I must say it was great to beat UC while they were #1 (2X)-but even still-those games were in November. Both teams want to be the best team in town-but I'd rather have lost to UC than lost to UD. The Cintas Center was more electric during the St. Joe's game than it was for the shootout.

If you hate XU for whatever reason that's fine...but don't rationalize your hatred by comparing the XU/UC rivalry to the many intense division rivalries out there-it does not compare. Most local fans I know whose teams (IU, UK, UC) are out of it at this point are rooting for XU.

I guess I “just don’t get it” as it has been said by local sports radio personalities about us. “Us?”…A generation of folks who either played at UC or are children of former players, captains and “C” Club members who know what is going on behind the scenes in Clifton. However, I think I do get it and our local sports personalities don’t understand the “old school”, main-line UC alumni who are really tired of waiting for next year. We see the money that has been spent to “keep up” but we are never really in the picture of winning anything of value on a national scale.

Tomorrow’s game is a Xavier vs. Huggins (and us) deal. For those of us who are Bob Huggins fans see it as that and it will never be anything else. I agree with one of the statements that was printed in the paper today…I do feel that Huggins should have been let go shortly after his DUI. The way that the President and 3 key members of the board handled Huggins departure was simply wrong. Isn’t it funny that the UC President is “booed” at every sporting event appearance? Is everyone wrong in their feelings of what took place and her involvement?

I also think it is interesting that Andy Kennedy has done very well at U of Mississippi. He was labeled as a great recruiter, coach, people person… And who can argue with the success of Frank Martin at K. State…who was labeled as a great recruiter, coach, people person… However, the “chosen one”, our local born and bread, hand picked successor keeps promising better things a head. Please don’t go off on what Mick inherited. He got what he wanted… his “dream job!” After all he was labeled as a great recruiter, coach, people person… the savior of the UC Basketball program and the fixer of the Huggins debacle. I wonder if the AD and the President would have been able to stay out of the local spotlight lately if it wasn’t for a good football program that is carrying the sports environment in Cincinnati. Don’t worry coach Kelly’s tenure will be short lived…he is too good to stay here long serving under this administration…after all, he is a winner.

Bottom line…GO WVU! (at least for tomorrow!)

To Anonymous 8:48 from last night...you are a UC grad, but haven't cared about UC basketball in 3 years? I understand your disappointment about the way Huggins was let go, but to totally ignore your alma mater shows your love for Huggins and your lack of love for UC. That is what frustrates me most about UC fans after Huggins left: the total disreguard they have for the program now. The real people that the fans of Huggins (and not of UC, as they claimed to have been) have hurt are the innocent players of the UC basketball program.

I find it amazing that even with Xavier's success we are still talking about UC basketball. Xavier makes the Sweet 16 and the homepage of Cincinnati.com bears an image of Bob Huggins in his WVU pullover.

Doc even does a story titled, "It's all about Bob". Hey Doc . . . the true irony here is that a team like Xavier that has had such tremendous success playing as a team, in a team sport (a rarity in modern sports) is overshadowed by story after story about one man - Bob Huggins.

I expected better from you.

Nice article Paul...really, great way to fire up every nostalgic former UC fan who is going to do an ignorant thing and root for Huggins. I have a brother and a load of friends at UC...my question is this: why all the loyalty? What does Bob Huggins know about loyalty? Maybe Kansas State can answer that question for me.

Last year I was at the US Bank Arena because I attend Xavier and cheer for my basketball team. Funny, Xavier fans' boos for Huggins were drounding out hundreds of people in purple "huggyville" t-shirts who had no relation to Kansas State. I wonder, what did all of those people do with all the purple gear they bought for the special occasion last year afterwards?

Ignorant. Cheer for your team, not a man's career. If you hate Xavier, cheer against Xavier. But for Huggins?

And Paul, anyone who is in the realm of buying these t-shirts and spending their money on Huggins attire are just sheep- shame on you for playing the good shepherd for them.

8:28, said, "Nancy Zim made a ballsy move...."

That statement is simply not true. Zim hestitated over that decison for a minimum of 2 years, and some would argue that it was longer than that. And then they hesitated over the Andy Kennedy decision.

That abrogation of responsibility, that cowardly timidity is the reason why this squad hasn't had a decent recruiting year during or since. (Since we now know how "great" Cronin's freshmen were last year.)

The manner in which she did NOT make a decision is the reason this team's in the state it is.

Let's all sit back, and imagine this scenario for a moment. The Cubs and Lou Piniella come to GASP, last weekend of the season, tied with the Reds for the wild card lead. Who do you pull for, Cincinnati? The man who took the Reds to their last world title, and was not so politely shown the door 3 years later, or your HOMETOWN TEAM? I understand that people have feelings for Huggins, and always will. I understand that people will always root against X. Whatever, that is the nature of fandom. What is eating me alive, though, is to continuously see one man dominate this week, when the hometown team gets slighted, both in print and radio. Would we be the same if Lou came to town with a playoff spot on the line? Will all you UC (but Huggins too) fans be pulling for WVU in football, or if UC and WVU are in the Big East title game next year? Just think about this, and, Doc, please inform the Enquirer Sports staff to seriously considering covering the HOMETOWN TEAM in the paper tommorrow. I know we don't win much in Cincy, but it's no reason to stoop to covering winning teams and coaches from DIFFERENT STATES!

What has happened here in Cincinnati this week with the talk and publicity surrounding this game is shameful. Instead of Celebrating the great acomplishments of a group of Student athletes at the local University and getting behind them as they try to represent Xavier and the City of Cincinnati we have instead decided to show our angst and ire against them in an attempt to show Nancy Zimpher we hate her and what she did to Bob Huggins. This is unconscionable, that you would Root against Xavier's student athletes b/c you hate Nancy Zimpher. It makes no sense and is embarrassing to this city. I can't imagine rooting against a local team because someone not associated with that team made me mad. Shall we start rooting against the Red's because we hate George Steinbrener? It's time we embrace the local team and get behind them. We don't get many success stories when it comes to sports in this town, perhaps we should embrace the one we have this year. I have, in one week, become a huge Xavier fan. For all others Shame on you and please leave Cincinnati. We don't need you!

Paul, in your "Madness" blog you talked about coaches "control-freaking" the last 2 minutes of a game.
Just for laughs, I timed the last 50 seconds of the X-Purdue game. It took exactly 8 minutes real-time, to go from 48 to 42 seconds = 6 seconds, BBall time. At least 4 foul shots (with substitutions between shots, of course?), 1 timeout and 1 official review..
From there they picked up the pace, so the final 48 sec were over in only 16 real minutes.

With 10 seconds left & down by 5, coach calls TO.

There oughta be a law!

CSA,

Totally agree with your thoughts on Zimpher. She recently embarrassed herself, the big O and the few remaining UC BB fans by applauding and applauding until everyone except Z, including the big O, was thoroughly irritated and embarrassed. It reached the point where the big O actually closed her hands to stop the facade. Of course, that's the kind of thing we've come to expect from someone so very educated and knowledgeable. And yet she struggles to reason herself out of a wet paper bag. This BB program goes nowhere until she and her puppet coach depart.

Sincerely,

President of the 'We Love Mick No Matter What' Fan Club

Anon 10:52 PM,

That's a rather narrow explanation as to why some of us berate this sorry current UC administration. I, for one, thought that Huggins had pretty much worn out his welcome after the infamous video incident. That, however, does not excuse the absolutely ignorant handling of his dismissal and the obliteration of the UC BB program, from which it has yet to come close to any semblance of recovery.

And, no one knows, including you and I, as to how long it will be until BB at UC fully recovers. In the meantime, we are stuck with a mid-major coach and a mediocre roster.

6:38,

Nancy screwed up the timing because Nancy is in charge.

It's that simple. It's her job to make the tough decisions and she hesitated for forever.

That's not to say she hasn't done other positive things for other areas of the university. She has. UC has some very highly rated programs.

But, let's not get wishy-washy about the university. She's in charge. The buck stops with her. She frittered away a minimum of 2 recruiting seasons.

Also, she's doing a deplorable job of establishing security on the perimeter of the university. It's a huge university, Cincy's largest employer, and she has great pull. Because of these things it's her job to provide security on site and to coordinate it off site. She's failing. It's badly hurting the image of the university.

I am a UC alum and was a big BH in the day but I have no problem rooting for X. It's a win win situation actually.

What I want to see from BH and WVU is if they are smart enough to continue the coaching philosophy into the future. While at UC he recruited plenty of offense talent but hey would lose all of their creativity before they could get on the floor. They would be so overwhelmed with where they needed to be on defense that they were too spent mentally on offense to move. Now that he has tried to keep intact some of John Belein's offense he should notice the combination has produced some overall success.

By mellowing and picking his points to go beserk he has allowed this team to develop at both ends.
