Why not let them score?

With 1:56 left in Pittsburgh, Jags QB David Garrard runs 32 yards on 4th and 2, to the Steelers 11. Jags trail 29-28. Pittsburgh has 2 timeouts. Conventional wisdom says you play it out and hope the Jags turn it over or mess up the short FG try. CW almost never works.

Why not let Jax score?

The Jags go up 34-29 or 36-29, B. Roethlisberger has 90 seconds and 2 timeouts, Wouldnt you rather be in that situation about 95 percent of the time? Tony Romo isnt going to flub that snap very often. Let them score, the game is back in your hands. As it was, the Steelers used their TOs and got the ball back with less than 30 seconds. Impossible situation.

Let the Jags score. You with me?

Other stuff:

Got an e-mail from a Reds insider yesterday, encouraging me to "write something'' urging Wayne Krivsky to deal for Oakland pitcher Joe Blanton. The club says it's still seeking a starter, but it probably won't be Blanton, even though he'd put them in the Central mix. Seems to me there's a philosophical split in the ranks down there, between those who want to win now and those who see '09 as more likely. Here's for certain: With M. Belisle as your #3, say hello to 3rd or 4th place.

If you can stay, um, patient 1 more year, Griffey comes off the books, everyone will know more about the potential of Bailey, Cueto, Maloney, Votto, Bruce etc. and everything should be humming for '09... I see the thinking there. I'm just tired of it. It's a little like having Christmas on Dec. 32.

I love S. Burrell's thinking and attitude at X this year. Seniors who believe they can play aren't normally so unselfish. Stan seems to enjoy being unburdened as The Man. He's just having fun and enjoying his senior year which, ideally, is what being a senior in quasi-amateur hoops is all about...

My beloved Redskins played their guts out yesterday and would have won in Seattle, save fore 2 plays, the choke-job missed 30-yard FG that would have put them up 17-13. . . and the incredibly stupid play call with 6 mins left, when off. coord. Al Saunders asked weak-armed QB Todd Collins to throw 40 yards into the wind on 1st down from the Skins 46... it wasnt enough that it took Saunders an entire half to figure out Collins couldnt drop 5 and 7 steps and needed to go 3 steps and run some screens and draws, to keep the rush off him... Saunders, who makes lots of money, thought it was a great idea to go deep into the wind... ball was picked off, returned for a TD and that was that...

Dude should give back his game check... as for Suisham the kicker, I'd have cut him right before he got on the plane.

Damn, now I sound like you guys.

Live big, John Riggins.

Holy Slingin' Sammy Baugh, I just choked on my Sunday morning apple fritter while reading your Redskins rant. What's next, give Ladell Betts the ball more often? hehe

Don't you know Al Saunders is a genius with a playbook with 13,218 pages?

Last such genius I know if got himself fired for offensive incompetence. Otherwise, I like Brian Billick just fine.

Thanks for having me on the show the other night.

See what happens to geniuses?

The above was sent by me, the so-called new media mastermind who forgot to sign off from the misses' business log-in.

What a dope.

Cabin Fever has set in, ehh?
Your blogging on Sunday morning?
And I'm responding.

I'm with you on Steelers >> that was an excruciating finish.

How can you still be a Redskins fan? Snyder & Brown must be related - mentally, although one spends money and our guy sleeps with his.

Butterball -- Your argument has some merit, but Tomlin chose to do it his way. 30 seconds was enough time to get into fireld goal range. I like Tomlin a lot, he takes ownership for his decisions.

As for the Redskins; you are drinking the Joe Fibbs koolaid like many other Washington fans. He has a nasty habit of letting others take the blame for his misyakes. The one exception was his unbelieveable two time out decision which he was unable to shift blame because he did not consult anyone which was caught on national TV. I do think that the Redskins really put it together their last few games; and Fibbs should get credit for holding the team together following Sean Taylor's murder; but the team should not have had to wait for that tradgedy to coalesce. The fault for that lays with the coaching staff.

So you now agree that "choke job" Shane Graham should have been cut after last years 39 yard miss against the Steelers?

Doc:

My buddies and I had this conversation about Jax last night. Problem with letting them score is that they don't have to score. See Westbrook against Dallas earlier this year. A 20 yard field goal is a gimme, only by a total breakdown or fluke would they not have converted the field goal to win it.

Imagine a scenario where the defense concedes a touchdown but the offense won't take it, you'd have a bunch of guys standing on the field in a bizarre game of chicken.

On the Reds - was the point that your article would somehow push them into making a deal that's close or would the intent be simply to stoke fan interest? Either way, weird that they'd ask. Is that naive?

Joe Blanton played baseball at Kentucky and lives in Louisville. Great guy, good pitcher. Reminds me of Tom Browning. A lefty who changes speeds and hits the corners. Not overpowering. When he's on, it produces a lot of ground balls. He would be an excellent addition for GASP.

Paul...

Why do we have to "wait a year to get Griffey off the books"? If the Reds do that...THEY GET NOTHING FOR HIM!

TRADE HIM FOR PITCHING NOW NOW NOW!!

I've been singing this song for 4 years!

Let 'em score. I say it every time that situation arises. Much better to know what you need to do than hope that by waiting for the clock to wind down, you don't shoot yourself in the foot and get the ball back with scant seconds on the clock.

Jeff nailed the comment about Jax-Pitt. A smart team only will refuse to score right away. They wanted Pitt to use their time outs. Its great strategy. Letting them score means you gotta then march the length of the field to school a TD in response. A late FG only requires a 60 or so yard drive

Krivsky was too busy giving away Josh Hamilton for a guy who couldn't make the Rangers rotation for 3 straight years to think about Blanton.

Don't know if this is good or bad (meaning I may be beginning to understand Kriv-dog's thinking). I see a low tier vet becoming no. 3 or 4 with Bailey and Belisle. I think they are really trying to develop pitching from within for a change. And dont be surprised if Griffey gets a 2-3 year deal, incentives based and retires a Red. Sorry Grif-bashers, he is here to stay.

"Let them score a TD ?" That logic is why Doc and the bloggers are who they are, and Tomlin, DelRio, etc are NFL playoff coaches.

I won't even begin to lay out they potential ways that Stillers defense could have produced turnover/ made a play /forced the action or just plain "done their job."

Nice to see Big Ben planning his offseason !!

"Damn, now I sound like you guys."

Paul,

You let off a little emotion in a post, and it seems that the "you guys" out there come and pile on. No mercy for PD showing his fan side I guess

If they don't get the #3 pitcher now, they can wait, but the price will go up. Everyone will know they're desperate.

On the other hand, it's not unreasonable to hope that one or two of Volquez, Bailey, Maloney, etc. might just see the light this year. They're approaching that point. Lightning could strike.

It would be dynamite if they got the #3 AND lightning struck the younger guys.

Who's the world's best pitching coach? What do the pitchers say?
