Sonny Moorman

Every once in awhile in this space, I write about stuff that makes life good around here. This is one of those times.

Went with my bud Kincaid after the radio show last night, to see Sonny Moorman at one of the last, great dives on the East Side... Shady O'Grady's in Remington. To say the venue matched the performer would be too obvious. Let's just say, when you think of to-the-bone blues, you think of O'Grady's and Sonny up front...

What a great guitar player. I'm not sophisticated enough in the whys of professional music to understand why some guitarists make the Big Time and some play Shady's. I just know what my ears tell me. They say Sonny is as good as anyone I've heard.

I only had time to stay for one set. Sonny ripped through four or five ZZ Top tunes right off the bat: Blue Jean Blues, Thunderbird, Jesus Just Left Chicago, Arrested For Driving While Blind among them. If genius is making the difficult look routine, Sonny qualifies. If you're a blues/R-and-B fan and havent heard Sonny, maybe you havent lived here very long. If you've never had the pleasure, I recommend it highly. What a player.

Shady's is indeed one of the last great dives on the East Side. Definitely beats the Village Tavern a few minutes up the street, but the Sleep Hollow Inn is still one of my favorite haunts (bad pun not intended). But what did you drink at the show, Doc? Do they serve Keystone Light at Shady's?

Bud Light? Try Coors Light instead, most places have that. Bud is gut rot. Splurge a little and Sam Adams and Michelob are also affordable tasty mass produced. Please consider these next time! My collge years saw a lot of Hudy Delite, so I can empathize. But, I eventually evolved. Couldn't agree more on the live scene here. Lived abroad in and out of country for several years. Now that I'm back I realized what I m issed and have a real appreciaion. Thanks for the tip, it's now on my list.

Don't take any guff from someone who claims to have "evolved" to Coors Light. Why don't you just drink a Zima, you fruit.

OK... First off... Drink Sam Adams, there is nothing wrong with Coors and Bud and such, its just... my wife drinks it! Drink a mans beer. Anyways, Sonny is one of my favorite performers of this area. He is a must see of Cincinnati. Keep in mind this is coming from a youngster that im sure most will classify as having a too progresive taste in music. I play guitar and Ive played in bands. Sonny's music is just inexplainably gooood. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL ROCK BAND!!! ....................................... Also Doc, I would like to hear you talk about why OHIO STATE (Columbus University)is soooooo loved and get to know some of there history between them and Cincinnati. I liked them up until 5 years ago and then i heard the truth.... I hate them more than the steelers and the yankees combined now and i think alot of people are getting that way do to the rise of UC football. I love your articals and i know you would have an interesting story about it... If you like OSU i know you will be the only fan with a sense of reasoning! Go Bearcats!!!

4:28 >> how about you don't drink anything for 6-8 hours & then try posting here?

Maybe then, I'll understand what you're trying to say.

HaHaHa, you guys sure got me good on Coors Light! The post was tongue in cheek on the beer, morons. Like I care what some guy from Milford (probably Hillsboro) or some hater who probably does drink alcoholic Sprite think.

I went to the Winter Blues Fest at the Southgate House a couple of weeks ago and Sonny was there. Great as always. One of the best acts playing was a group called G Mills and The Hitmen. I've never heard of them before but these guys rocked the house! Definetely worth checking them out.
