Doomed

Mike Brown, to Mark Curnutte, re Bengals "personnel department":

"The product (is) not the number of employees, but what the group as a whole produces, AND I WOULD ARGUE THAT WE DO WELL.''

"We cover effectively. I think we're efficient. I don't apologize for that.''

"We have as much digestible information as other (teams) have.''

I don't know how people stay Bengals fans. I really don't.

Paul, I don't either. I've been a fan since 1972 and I'm ashamed to admit that. I guess I suffer with insanity just like "Mikey Boy". What did Einstein say about insanity? Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results? Somehow, I've got to let go of my allegance to that joke of an NFL franchise. WOW! I need help!

Even though I now live in Nebraska, I'm raising my childeren to be Bengals fans. My 9 year old son takes losses particularly tough. I wonder if I could be brought up on child abuse charges for it?

....this whole Bengals situation is so old, so re-tread, so yesterday, so tedious & tiresome; so boring & boorish. This city needs to stop participating/enabling its own brain-washing by this joke of a front office.

I turned a significant corner in recent years when I realized I had stopped being a Bengals fan and started merely being a follower of the team. Big difference. I was 10 when the Bengals started, so my entire pro football experience and allegiance is wrapped up in this franchise. And I'm a big pro football fan. But at this point, the Bengals are like a gruesome car accident or freak show where you are appalled but can't look away. I have come to appreciate the sheer entertainment value, the comic relief, the fact that the league needs pathetic franchises just as it needs flagship ones. I'm okay now with this path that "our team" is, and always will be, on. Once I found myself seeing it in a new way, I began to see my vital signs stabilize. The air smells fresher. Food tastes better. My wife is prettier. I highly recommend it!

I think it is hard for anyone to admit that something they love so much really doesn't feel the same way about them. I feel like a jilted lover who continues to stay in a realtionship that I know will never work but I have just invested so much time in it that I'm not ready to give up on it. I still hold out hope that the other person will change. They will realize how perfect we are for each other and then everything will be perfect.

But deep down, you know things will never really change. I give my money to Mike Brown b/c I love this city and I love this team. For all that we give him, he give us the same, tired B.S. that has continued to line his pockets for the last 25 years.

Mike sticks to the same principles that worked for his father 30-40 years ago. He is unwilling to adapt to changing times. Sometimes I think he continues on the same path so that one day he can say, "I told you so".

Never forget, this is the same S.O.B. that held this city for ransom for a new stadium. The same guy (Bob Bedinghouse) who negotiated the stadium deal for the city now works for MIKE BROWN. Now Mike hopes we forget the commitment he made to us. The commitment for a better team, not just a competitive team. We've given him so much and he gives us so little in return.

I also have to laugh when the local media kowtows to the guy by saying he wants to win. I've heard local commetators say, "Well, no one wants to win more than Mike." B.S. Total B.S. Mike cares about a handful of things in this world: Himself, Katie, Troy, little Mike, and whatever other family he has. You see, we are not on his list of priorities. He will continue to take and take and take. What he gives back to us is minimal, at best.

Remember, unlike other NFL owners, this is the only business he owns. He runs it like a mom and pop store. We can all just hope that whenever Mike decides to hang it up, the same losing mentality skipped a generation w/ Katie.

God help us all if it hasn't...

Paul, to answer your question, I think most fans stay because mediocrity is actually an improvement for the Bengals.

But also, sports fans by instinct live on the eternal hope of having hope. Otherwise, Red Sox fans would have committed themselves 50 years ago.

I have no issue wearing my Bengals caps, t-shirts or winter jacket around D.C. In fact, most people usually nod in sympathy. Of course, those people are generally Washington Wizards fans!

Brown's comments are eerily similar to Dan Snyder's response to a query about hiring a GM for the Redskins; "if it ain't broke, why fix it?"

Dude, you just had a hall of fame coach go 31-36 and have to quit before further tarnishing his former accomplishments.

It is sad to see this level of denial. Once you finish digesting material; your body normally expels the waste. No need to apologize; just go and have a good dump and move on.

Dan, it's broke - fix it.
Mike, it's broke - fix it.

Try to fool yourself if you must, but you can't fool me. I tried to take a similar path, but bought into the fools gold of 2005 and found myself as fervent as ever. I've come to grips with my fanaticism (as misplaced as it might be) and wear it like a badge. Although I know Mike Brown doesn't change, dark recesses in my brain still hold out hope. Next fall will see me (again) pacing the living room in front of the TV, snarling at it. Swearing at it and wondering just what in the hell is going on - and why I put myself through it...

It would appear that Mike Brown has drawn a line in the sand: things will not change, and those who disagree must accept that as an inalterable reality.

So, the ball is in your court, Mr./Mrs./Ms. Bengal Fan. No more waffling, no more empty rhetoric, no more complaining without backing it up. It is time to decide if you are willing to continue to fund this arrogance. He's playing with your money - the Bengals need you more than you need them.

If you are serious about your dissatisfaction, put up or shut up. Don't buy the tickets, the team-logo clothing, etc., until meaningful change takes place. Withhold what is rightfully yours, not his: your money. You have real power, if you choose to use it.

You know Mike Brown is betting that, despite your complaining, you will continue to spend your hard-earned disposable income on his inferior product - and not without reason, because that's what you have done so far. But ultimately it's your decision to make, not his - it's your money.

I urge you to use your influence accordingly, as you would anywhere else where you are dissatisfied with the product or service you receive. If it does not meet your standards, walk away from it, until it reaches a level that is deserving of your support. Until that time, no more! Only then will real, meaningful change occur.

I do not understand how Mike can say this with a straight face. Just because you draft terrible players and choose to keep them does not mean that you have done a good job scouting. They have no NFL scouts. That means that when free agency time comes around we sign players like Kendrick Allen.

at 1:29 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The obvious question: Mike, what is your yardstick?? (in claiming "we do very well").

If the scouting dept is doing "very well", then the coaches/GM must the cause for 1 winning season in 17 years.

Coaches or GM? Wait, the GM hires the coaches. Therefore, the problem must be the GM.

Course that's what you've been saying for 15 years, Paul. Jeez.

Anyway, keep it up. At least it's a little satisfying seeing Mike get called out in black & white.

Hey Paul -

Whatever happened to that Bengals documentary - the one directed by the '20 Dates' guy, Myles Berkowitz?

As I recall, it was a terrific premise - an in-depth look at the Bengals, why they're the worst sports franchise in North America, and why we as Cincy fans can't stop ourselves from rooting for them. It seemed to be in full production swing, and then we hired Marvin Lewis. So for a time, it looked like such a movie would be irrelevant, as we all hoped to be on the cusp of a collective breakthrough.

And now that that hope has been crushed, why doesn't someone call this guy? "Hey, Myles! We suck again! So finish your movie, man!" At least we'd get to see you interviewed on the big screen, saying how you've run out of synonyms for "lousy". I mean, that stuff's movie-magic, man...

If this team is really dumb enough to deal Chad that just may be the last straw for me.

Chad's making much more of the issue than it deserves... Chad's a very good player... it'd be good if he'd respect his coach enough to stop so much individual celebrating (of course, it'd be good if his coach had the brass to demand it.)He won't be traded, b/c Mike likes him and he's under contract thru 2010, w/a club option for 2011

During the past 5 years, including the 2005 playoff loss, the Bengals are 42-39. That's not good enough but it's much better than the previous decade or so. From 2000-2003 the Bengals were 12-36. From 1990-1999 they were 52-108. Our expectations are higher now and I believe that's a good thing. We should demand more, but we should also do a much better job of keeping things in perspective.

The older I get (I'm 47), the less I care about the Bengals and pro football in general. I am a former season ticket holder (1980 - 1993) who dedicated every Sunday to the Bengals. My mood was directly linked to wins and losses. Mike Brown and players like Chris Henry, Odell Thurman, etc. have led me to the mindset of.....Who cares?

Paul ... I stopped being a Bengals fan years ago. I have not bought a ticket, watched a game, or purchased any NFL apparel in ten years. But I am still a Paul Daugherty fan, so maybe you could just write about something else and stop trying to turn Mike Brown into something that he is not.

There was a major graphic during the Cowboys/Giants game about years between playoff wins and coming out the gates first, with a solid 17 YEARS are the Bengals.

How, in MB's most delusional state, can he rectify that stat with his comments to Curnutte?

What's the definition of insanity...doing the same thing over and over and over again and expecting a different result? Perhaps an unknown lawyer wanting some recognition could go after the Brown family for being legally crazy!

I am a fan and probably will be in the future. I don't go to games, though. If I get free tix, I certainly don't spend money on concessions.

Should I find a new team to be a fan of? Should my allegiance change based on the current standings? If I switch to the Patriots and they are losing late in the game to Green Bay in the Super Bowl, should I switch before the game is over?

at 11:20 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree with the guys who are saying to hit the Bengals in the pocketbook by not going to the games. That is exactly where we were as a city in 2002 before Marvin got here. If you remember, they were coming off a 2-14 season (worst season ever - even by Bengal standards), still hadn't really settled into PBS (few, if any, sellouts), had the first pick in the draft (expected debacle), needed a coach (expected debacle), and were basically a PR nightmare scurrying around for credibility. They need to be on that same hotseat again, or made to feel like they are. Paul, PLEASE do not let up on this team! Keep the hammer down. I am shifting my position on them from support to outright contempt. I am not ashamed of it either. They are driving me to it. Egotistical denial, hubris - whatever you want to call it - is something I choose to no longer support. Brown's 'I would argue we've done well' comments should serve as a wakeup call to this city - nothing is going to change.

I live in Chicago and the Blackhawks owned by an even worst owner than Mike Brown, Bill Wertz. No home TV games, attendance down even by NHL standards no hope for a once proud organization. But earlier this year he (Wertz) passed away and his son took over. Within a matter of days not weeks but days the Blackhawks were on TV, fired all of his dad's old cronies and hired the Cubs PR director. Before there recent slump the Hawks were getting as much pub here as the Bulls. So there is hope Bengals fans that once Mike Brown steps down Katie can change things in a hurry. until then we must all suffer with this fool who still thinks it 1960 and his dad is the coach of the Browns

Argue? I understand he was using that as a figure of speech but it can only be understood in the same light as let's say a six year old arguing at 11:00pm to stay up later to watch more TV. He has no argument to anyone who can see the real goal.

at 1:06 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

How about some props to Jim McNally, the former Bengals offensive line coach who recently retired. One of the best in the business, Mc Nally was brilliant until the Bengals stopped drafting o-lineman because they thought he could make anyone (even players without skills) into an o-lineman. That scheme where Pete Johnson would swing out of the backfield and catch a pass, the linemen would seal and Montoya would pull out in front of Johnson to wipe out the linebacer with outside contain was unstoppable. Putting Johnson one-on-one with DBs was a painful mismatch for opposing defenses.

"I don't know how people stay Bengals fans. I really don't"

I don't either. And now they raise ticket prices $4.00 a seat next season? It must be for something other than on field performance.

But next year - again - I'm sure PBS (I wonder if Paul Brown would like his name removed) will be filled for nearly every game. There IS a sucker born every minute - or at least a Bengals fan.

At least now we can say - thank goodness we have UC Bearcat football!

Our only hope is Katie Blackburn. The sooner she can take over, the better. Mike Brown is nothing short of dilusional, and after making those comments should be taken to a mental institution. I wouldn't even consider buying season tickets again until Mike Brown leaves or hires a GM 9which I'm pretty comfortable will NEVER happen under him).

You guys look and sound like a bunch of idiots. And thats just the way Paul and others in the media like it. (or you) The Bengals problems during the season didnt have a DAMN THING TO DO WITH LACK OF SCOUTING. The idiots in the media and the fans/fools who follow the media in this town are just the lastest suckers to buy into the media's hype. the Bengals were one missed field goal away from going to the playoffs for the second consecutive year in a row and the media in this town makes you idiots believe the sky is falling and Chad johnson is the reason for it. It's no wonder so many in this country were lead to believe Sadam husien had something to do with 911. Paul and the media feeds feed off of you guys ignorance. They know you dont know anything about sports given your lack of athletic achievement so they thrive of your jealousy, envy and inherent biases. What are you going to do next, blame Chad for Global Warming? Oh i forgot, the media and fans have already blamed Griffey Jr. for that mess. And you wonder why Cincinnati sports fans and media has the "negative outside perception" it does. The days of Mayberry need to come to an end. Andy, Opie and Mr. C arent coming back. Get off of your conservitve backwater ways and step into the new century. God help Dusty baker!!!!!i can't wait till baseball season to hear the media baseball apologist talk so glowingly about how this is the Reds year and how we should all jump on the Reds bandwagon. These are the same people who labeled Josh hamilton the "natural". And that's after 8 drug rehabs. I wonder if Chad Johnson would have ever been given that name had he had gone thru 8 drug rahbs? Who am i fooling? OF COURSE NOT, this is Cincinnati.....home of the double standard.

Paul, I know it is not the media's job to promote one team over another. However, I wouldn't mind having UC seen not just as an alternative, but a preferred venue for local football (not that you haven't already said that). I paid less for UC season tickets than a single Bengals game would cost. With the pay increase of the assistant coaches, new practice/indoor fields and future facilities improvements; UC CONTINUES to show a commitment to putting quality teams on the football field. I will pay more for future tickets, but I will also probably have something to show for my investment as well.

I think the kool-aid ANON 3:57PM is drinking has some alcohol in it.

Do not invest your money in a team that refuses to invest in itself. The lack of a true personnel department hurts the Bengals franchise.

I'm not calling for a GM. I think it's great coaches have a lot of say in personnel matters. It makes the coaches more accountable. However, there is a need for more information for those coaches to make proper decisions throughout the year.

Stop drinking the kool-aid.

Gee, ANONYMOUS 3:57, why don't you just come out and say you don't like white people? To Bengals fans grappling with the past 17+ seasons of misery, I have an effective approach to following the Bengals: Invest in a DVR and record the game. Watch the first quarter. If it's not looking good, go do something else and check back after the game. If they win, watch the rest of the game in half the time by skipping through the commericals. If they lose, delete without watching and be happy you didn't waste half your day. This approach has greatly reduced my frustration over the past 5 years. Reds ownership is at least trying to improve the team, so I can honestly say I'm a Reds fan. I don't get wrapped up in the Bengals any longer - they only want to be good enough to fill the seats.

at 4:24 AM Blogger bodacio said...

Anon 3:57,

So many words...not a single valid point. The law of averages suggests you should have at least stumbled upon one. Let's go down the checklist:

Scouting: Yep...what does scouting have to do with lousy players and being ill-prepared for your opponent week in and week out?

Chad Johnson: Poster child for a team with zero discipline or chemistry. Just maybe...there are a few Bengals with dignity and class. A few that might resent those "Marv Lewis Free Pass" unsportsmanlike penalties...and the fact that a guy who so desperately tries to draw attention to himself disappears down the stretch of every big game.

The sky is falling: Been falling for 17 years, Johnny. Only someone incredibly ignorant or biased could take that 2005 season as the rule and not the exception.

Griffey, Jr.: Very little return on investment, gave up on that "hustle" concept a few years back. Criticism comlpetely undeserved?

Josh Hamilton: What does a drug addiction have to do with natural talent? Are you suggesting crack cocaine is some sort of performance enhancer or performing at a high level after a 3-4 year layoff does not hint at natural talent?

I guess it's difficult to see where you've been thrown for a loop. Keep tossin''em back, champ.

at 9:45 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Josh Hamilton was called the natural because there was a movie by that name about a great baseball player who leaves the game of baseball for a number of years. Defying odds, he then makes a comeback and hits massive homers. Hamilton was also great, made a comeback, and also hit massive homers.

What does that have to do with Chad Johnson?

at 10:19 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

annon 9:45......Josh hamilton was also an cancer in the locker room and many of his teammates resented that fact.(see brandon Phillips). ironically, it was brandon Phillips who caught hell from the media because phillips had the audacity to call out the media proclaimed "the natural". The only reason you didnt hear about this clubhouse "malcontent" was becuase the media had invested to much time and energy looking for the next great white hope. These are the same people who wanted Sean casey to assume the mantle as captain even thought we still had barry larkin on the team. But Sean casey was such a nice guy. I think you guys call those players "gamers", "guys who do more with less" and the great "high motor guy". I often wonder why the media neglected to tell the "real story" about josh hamilton but cant wait to make Chad Johnson out to be the next Barry larkin, frank robinson, eric davis, and Ken griffey jr.? Things that make you say HHHHMMMMMMMMMMMM

at 10:23 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

did i miss something? How many times has Chad johnson been arrested for DUI? How many rehab stints has Chad gone thru for his addiction to crack cocaine? Maybe one day Chad can get a "dirt t-shirt night" al Ryan freel.....or maybe the media can give Chad a catchy name like the "natural" once he goes thru rehab?? Dont you just love the media in this town? Conservitive to the core

I think Mikey B. makes a fair point about the draft and haven't heard anyone with decent reply. Listen, does anyone know which players were defense and which were offense? Numbers can lie. Which players are starters? Which aren't? Which players have stayed with the Bengals longer than they should have, etc? There may be room for explanation about people complaints about the draft. Maybe there aren't. But this seems like an issue that DEFINITELY deserves some counter research. I don't have the stuff at my finger tips.

Paul, I was a Bengals fan, and i just decided within the last couple of weeks that enough is enough. i live in Fort Wayne, IN, and have been paying $260 for the Sunday Ticket to feed my "addiction." for what? to watch Chad and TJ act like whiny little babies, and watch a team that self-destructs at every critical juncture? it's supposed to be fun, and it's not. more than anything, i'm tired of Mike Brown. he doesn't care about winning; he cares about making money. congratulations, Mike: i'm sure you're a millionaire many, many times over, but your management style sucks. it's one thing to root for a lousy team. it's another thing when management doesn't care enough about winning to spend the necessary resources to make it happen. i've had enough. i'll sit at home and watch the Colts--for free. now there's an organization that gets it.

I'm sure Mike Brown is a nice man. He seems to get along with everyone. Many people, Marvin included, speak of how well they're treated. I've never read or heard of anyone saying anything bad about him personally.
BUT -- he has absolutely no clue about how to achieve success. To argue that the Bengals have done "well" and his operation has been "quite efficient" is nothing but a FANTASY existing in his own mind.
Actually, he has led the Bengals to tops in the NFL in something -- MOST CONSECUTIVE SEASONS WITHOUT WINNING A PLAYOFF GAME!
Bengal fans have to face the fact that Mr. Brown is not going to change anything. My goodness, he thinks they've DONE QUITE WELL!
Unbelievable.

at 7:14 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

This probably won't go over well, but I agree with most of Anon 3:57's premise... and yes there was a premise. Cincy sports fans do get sucked into the hype. How important is more scouts if the coachs can't identify the talent that already exists on the team (see Toeina and Dorsey). How come people preach statistics and sybermetrics up and down in baseball, but when it comes to football and Mike Brown makes some valid statistical points about the RELATIVE success of the Bengals scouting dept over the last 5 years - people freak out. I'm sorry, we have drafted a lot of pro-bowl caliber talent, we have drafted more players that stuck with the team than most teams in the nfl, we have had an inordinate amount of injuries and bad luck occur to some of our top picks. Can it be improved? Sure. Should it? Definitely- whats it going to hurt. Is it the problem? No - its a smoke screen. This team was terribly coached, executed poorly and some of its best players spit the bit at the wrong times (and no, this doesn't fall on Chad Johnson's shoulders). Let me ask this. Why when a pass is thrown 10 yards off target and intercepted - and the QB runs up to the receiver and yells at him and the receiver yells back- should the receiver then be viewed as a cancer and the QB a saint? Wasn't Carson yelling at him? Its well established by the "blue collar" call-in sports fans that Marvin Harrison doesn't dance after he scores... but Peyton doesn't scream at Harrison on national tv either. By villifying Chad and worshiping Carson - Bengals fans set themselves up for comments about racial bias. In reality, I don't think either Carson or Chad were the problem but its just funny how some of the loudest fans don't seem to be ones who actually watch the games.

As is usually the case, I'm about to disagree with most everyone on this blog. What Mike Brown said was that the Bengals do fine drafting people. Because the Bengals record has sucked so bad over the years, most people here seem to think that the drafts must have sucked. But let's look at his drafts. The general feeling is that it takes 3 years to see how a draft works out, so lets look at the drafts from 2003-2005.

2005 Draft
Pollack - injury
Thurman - stupidity
Henry - stupidity
Ghiacuc - starter
Kieft - injury
Tab Perry - injury, but looked good when he played
Fanene - injury, but looked like he has potential

2004 draft
Chris Perry - injury
K Raitliff - underachieved
Madieu Williams - solid starter
Caleb Miller - injury
Landon Johnson - solid starter
M Askew - underachieved
R Geathers - great pick
S Andrews - a project, but looks OK now
Maurice Mann - cut
Greg Brooks - injury, I think
Casey Bramlett - cut

2003 draft
Carson Palmer - great player
Eric Steinback - great player
Kelly Washington - underachieved
Dennis Weathersby - injury
Jeremi Johnson - great pick
Khlaid Abdullah - cut
Langston Moore - cut
Scott Kooistra - injury ?
Elton Patterson - cut

So looking at their drafts, the picks look pretty good to me. Injuries have really hurt, and taking Odell and Chris Henry were risky and haven't panned out very well for them. But the picks themselves seem like they were quite good. If you compare these picks to the supposed greatest personnel guy in the league, Ozzie Newsome over those years, I'd suggest our picks are better than the Ravens, particularly if you throw out the injuries, which nobody can predict.

I know I'll get ripped for this, but the draft has certainly not been the Bengals problem. And in this instance, I agree with Mikey-boy.

Actually 10:23 >> you did miss something:
The Sports Illustrated feature where Chad was quoted as "Right now, I don't have time for my children."
Didn't know he had children/wife-not? Ha, stuff happens on South Beach.

But he's a good catcher-of-the-football, when not threatened.

Josh is a bum?

Then again, I may be wrong.

anon 10:19. Frank Robinson played too long ago to be brought up now. Barry Larkin retired as a Red and received a sizable, ill-advised contract extension because of fan support. Eric Davis loved it here so much that he returned to the Reds in the mid-90s. Ken Griffey Jr. hasn't been traded because he is loved by the fans. None of these guys was treated poorly. Nice try. Your point about Brandon Phillips has nothing to do with my post. I was trying to explain why Josh Hamilton was called the natural. Chad Johnson has no place in a Josh Hamilton conversation.
