Shameless Friday show plug

Friday night is my favorite radio night... try to ease off the negativity pedal, figuratively put my feet up... have Sonny Lodder on tonight, of Lodder Marine... Sonny sells boats, some huge, some so huge he has to drive them (captain them?) to the buyers' choice of port, usually in Florida... he has great stories about Huck Finn-ing between here and Ft. Lauderdale...

Will have a golf guy on, to sucker me into thinking new equipment will help my bad game... we hackers seek the Magic Wand.. I have hundreds of Wands, rusting in the garage...

seeking an HDTV expert... if you dont have Hi-Def and love TV sports, run to an electronics place and spend... amazing, amazing, from NASCAR to Lambeau in the snow to the Masters... the picture is unlike anything you've seen.... warning: once you've got it, you just can't watch anything else...

also, will pose this question, on the eve of the NFL title games: who are 3 guys and situations that will always make you stop and watch? For example: Favre in the snow, Lawrence Taylor on the edge, Devin Hester, back deep... how many of those must-sees are playing this weekend? I'd say Favre, Brady, Rodney Harrison (receiver across the middle), Randy Moss, Antonio Gates..

Paul, you're absolutely right about the HDTV thing. I got mine last fall, in time for the start of football season. Also works great with the PS3...... now I can barely stand to watch a non-HDMI signal......

Regarding HDTV...

I'm not a techie, but I know enough to be somewhat knowledgeable about this HD thing.

If you want the best HD picture, get an outdoor antenna and plug it into a television which has a ATSC digital tunner. If you have a television without a digital tuner, you can buy a setup tuner box. The government is providing each household two $40 coupons to assist you during this transition to digital.

The best HD picture is seen using an antenna. You can watch HD if you have cable or a dish, but you need a receiver which gets the HD channels. Many people complain cable's HD channels are very compressed, which results in a substandard HD picture.

Did you know 15-20% of this market watches television using an antenna (terrestial television)?

Did you know over 50% of the residents of the city of Cincinnati DON'T HAVE cable or a dish.

As for the type of television to buy, you basically have three choices: Plasma, LCD and DLP. If you want the best bang for the buck, I'd go with DLP. Not only are the prices reasonable and the televisions big, but there is no image burn in. Plus, the movie theaters use DLP technology in their digital cinemas, so they must know something.

Then there's the issue of 720p, 1080i or 1080p. 1080p is the maximum HD image, but none of the television networks broadcast in 1080p. FOX is 720p. CBS is 1080i. The only thing right now that I know of that utilizes 1080p is Blu-ray (high def dvd).

The transition to digital is happening next year. Do you need a new HD television before the transition? No. If you have cable or a dish, you won't notice the transition even happened because you're paying for television. However, this transition will affect those who watch television using an antenna. So if you watch television in the bedroom without cable, you're going to need a digital tuner for that older television.

Hope this helps.

And with all the Bengals stuff going on, check out this trip down memory lane:

You don't need to spend a ton of money on an expensive antenna. I made that mistake. A $12 set-top antenna from Radio Shack did the job amazingly well until I got DirecTV HD.

But if you go the OTA route, you will miss some of the awesome programming being offered now on HD cable and satellite--such as National Geographic Channel, HDNet, ESPN, Discovery Channel, MTV concerts and more.

Paul is right: Once you have HD there's no going back. It's amazing the stuff you watch just because of the picture. Like cookig shows. Or snakes int he jungle.

One of my favorite tricks when having people over, such as the NFL playoff games, is flipping from the HD signal back to the digital signal on standard satellite. It blows away people when they see the difference they never actually realized.

Plasma is the way to go if you have the money. Burn-in is no more from what I have been told. You can watch the tv from any angle, plus you do not have to buy any bulbs like you do with DLP. While you are at it hook up a blu-ray player to it. Holy cow!!! You will never want to watch standard television again.
I hate going over anyone's house to watch a game on standard tv's.

I have converted all my TVs over to flast screen. I get HD signals over the air using rabbit ears, and it works just fine. I may upgrade my Dish Network to get other HD channels, but my sense is they are charging a premium. Prices have dropped. Now is a good time to convert.

the most beautiful sporting event on HD is the Masters. It is the beginning of spring, you're tired of the gray cold Ohio Valley weather, and you spend the entire weekend watching Augusta National in full bloom. Worth whatever the price.

For you first time buyers, don't pay what's on the tag if you go to Circuit City. They'll negotiate like you're buying a frickin' car.

Aside from the techie talk, which I hope to join someday soon, I'd like to maybe throw another name out there of who to keep an eye on this weekend. One could argue LT be added to the list. But honestly, as solid a 'back as he is (possibly the most solid), is he in the same class at his respective position as those Doc mentioned? Doubtful. Of those not included in this weekend's festivities, I'll throw Ray Lewis in there.
