Golfweek: Stupid? Or Overreaction?

You don't put a picture of a noose on the cover of your magazine, in reference to a stupid comment by a Golf Channel anchorwoman about "lynching'' Tiger Woods. That's not being PC. It's just common sense. While I'm entirely fed up with Political Correctness -- we shouldnt pay much attention to an athlete's political and/or social-cultural observations; to a cable anchorwoman's goof we should pay even less -- this magazine cover was entirely calculated to enrage, not inform. Either that, or the editors of Golfweek are just very, very dumb.

Kelly Tilghman apologized to Woods. He accepted it. For a guy with a good memory for slights, Woods has been remarkably charitable when it comes to this sort of thing. See: Zoeller, Fuzzy. But this one was different than some mindless John Rocker comment or Michael Irvin observation. We weren't lynching many white people in this country in the 20th century.

Golfweek perpetuated the hurt, for profit. Foolish.

Paul, I couldn't agree with you more. What that announcer said was deplorable at worst, mindless at best, but it's time to let it go. I know there isn't much going on in the golf world right now, but couldn't they have at least been a little more subtle if they wanted that to be their cover story? Nothing like a front page of a noose (sp?) hitting newstands just in time for MLK day...

How about doing a little research? Tuskeegee Institute records of lynchings between the years 1880 and 1951 show 3437 African-American victims, as well as 1293 white victims. I got that little nugget from Wikopedia.

Those complaining the most about Tilghman's comment (Rev Al) probably didn't even know the Golf Channel existed before last week. Apologies were made to and accepted by Woods, putting a classy end to the unfortunate incident. We thought.

I agree, Golfweek certainly fanned the flames, with profit in mind. GW and its sister publication Golf World are two of the best golf publications, but not widely circulated outside the inner circles of the golf business. Both weekly publications provide plenty of timely info without all the ads and useless tips and lessons provided by Golf Digest and other such monthly mags. Will the controversy help move a few more books...probably.

All that aside. Rich Lerner does a much, much better job in the tower than Tilghman. She jabbers way too much. This might be a good time for the GC to make a switch. She should have never gotten that gig.

Michael Irvin observation? Refresh my memory.

Thanks

Based on Tiger's mature response to this thing, the media is being completely irresponsible. They are trying to create an issue where there is one. More worrisome, is how every little off the cuff remark, no matter how innocent (does anyone really think this girl was thinking about Tiger's race when she said this?) is analyzed and blown out of proportion by the media. It makes public speaking a risky business and is particularly impactful upon our political process because politicians are afraid to be honest and candid.

JB, Irvin claimed that Tony Romo must have had some black ancestry because of the way he moved.

Thanks for the Irvin info. I recall that now. Because I take almost nothing he says seriously, the remark was easily forgotten. He did have the best HOF induction speech I've ever seen, though.

First of all, there is no casual use of the word "lynch" or there shouldn't be. That Tiger thought it was no big deal is wonderful for him-- but I'm sure there are Jews who think it's not big deal when people insert the term "Nazi" into, heck, virtually everything -- (e.g. feminazi, etc.) but that doesn't make that right either.
Clearly, the suspension was enough, firing was not necessary -- and yes, the magazine cover was a ham-fisted attempt at best. But I find it amusing that the same people who think the suspension of the commentator was too harsh, have NO problem with the "reassigning" of the magazine editor. What happened to "everyone makes mistakes?".

Also Paul, glad to know this topic was only worth your time when the magazine goofed -- you didn't have the stones to address what the commentator said. Way to be on top of it....Oh wait, not suprising for a Marge apologist....

Political correctness defined:

When an extremist liberal tries to ram his or her thoughts and beliefs down your throat without any consideration that you may have another point of view and then calls you an"---ist" when you don't accept it, that's called political correctness. When a conservative (usually male, usually white) does the same, it's called adhering to a value system.

Political correctness: The idea that anyone in the majority would have to accomodate anyone else's way of thinking (the way minorities have been forever) and that there may be social sanctions if they do not (as minorities have had to deal with forever)

PC sucks, but let's not act like it's a novel idea...it's just hard being on the other side for once....

Al Sharpton is a straw man -- you don't have to like or agree with Crazy Al to think that Tilghman was WAY out of line. Her suspension was appropriate.

It is completely ignorant to mention Irvin's comments about Tony Romo. The athleticism of the black athlete was not used as a scare tactic to keep an entire race in oppression, like lynching was. You are stretching your ignorant argument.

Who hasn't done or said something stupid, and then immediately regretted it? How would it feel if the first major screw up you did on the job, not only did you lose your gig, but you have Rev. Al chasing you around? It's live TV, and she is working without a script. She admitted it was a mistake, and owned up to it. What the magazine did was totally pre-meditated, and therefore much more egregious.

hey, 3:37... nice try with the Marge Apologist remark. Check out ANYthing I wrote about her over the years... normally, don't take the time to respond to morons... you're an exception

Couldn't take the examination of your own words, huh? I gave you several examples of how you kissed her butt -- but I guess you were afraid to post it...

437... to clarify... you sent me nothing. I posted your remarks as you sent them. Go away. The dirt beneath your rock is calling.

Paul: this is a wonderful example of my point earlier (11:22am)-you try to start a discussion (you really didn't even take a side) and already a commenter has implied you are a racist (the marge apologist comment)...perhaps that is why there is so much racism still today, because the PC crowd won't let us have honest conversations about racism.

Wow --- uh, happy belated MLK day. I don't know what's between you and the poster re: Marge. But I did do a quick search re: you and Marge Schott. Your column after she passed away was very much apologist. I think you called her a "victim of PC?" -- Come on, she was a bigot. I don't know who's right, but if you can't debate with a little more class, maybe you need a new job. It's not nice being called out as an apologist -- but "moron", "dirt under rock" -- whatever -- are you 5?

Ooh read it too -- not so good. Anyway, I think Leonard Pitts, ESPN.com (I thinkt he ombudsman) and cnnsi.com deal with all of this a little more...repsonsibly....less personal rancor -- check it out....

(The drama is why I don't usually read Enquirer blogs -- even though a few guys --Borgman, Political bloggers --- seem to be able to keep it together)

Anyway, intersting thoughts, guys...

sorry --- my spelling was atrocious --

My problem with all this is how the suits at Golf Channel are trying to act as if this never happened. If nothing else, this was a chance to engage in an important discussion. My guess is they only acted on Tilghman when the Tour or their sponsors demanded action. Not surprising - GC aint even half the level of a local news operation.

But, the lack of consistency here is also troubling. Don't get me wrong, I think this all stinks. But plenty of others have been fired for the same, or less. The dude at golfweek got the ax. The fact that Tilghman is an attractive young woman certainly worked in her favor here. What if another of the Golf Channel male anchors had said the same thing?

Answer: one less annoying GC anchor. (Not necessarily a bad thing)
