We don't need no stinkin' contract

It's a good thing coaches have contracts. Otherwise, they'd be moving all over the place. In July '06, Bobby Petrino signed a 10-year extension at Louisville. By January '07, he was gone to the Atlanta Falcons, who paid him $24.5 million for 5 years. Yesterday, Petrino left that job after not quite 5 years, to become the coach at Arkansas, where the Hogs had him sign a contract made of asbestos.

There was Petrino last night, doing that embarrassing Pig-sooey thing while swearing his perpetual, temporary loyalty to Arkansas. Meanwhile, Les Miles gets indignant at anyone who'd question his affinity for LSU, while at the same instant he's dialing Michigan.

As a general rule now, if you are a big-time college coach, your father was a snake, your mother a rat.

I loved how Petrino said he longed to return to the realm of the "student athlete'', where he could have a four-year influence on the minds and futures of 18-year-olds. What's he gonna teach 'em? How not to live up to your commitments?

Whenever a coach starts talking about loyalty, commitment and Staying, you should make only one move, and that's for your coat.

In Petrino's case it's far more a case of realizing that the magic doesn't necessarily transfer. Pitino found the same thing in his flirtation with the Celtics. Sure, it was the money, but what brought them back was the realization that success is the lifeblood of fame and fortune. Brian Kelly said it best about teams, and it applies, too, to coaches. "You don't win because of your ranking. You're ranked because of winning." (or something like that)

I don't fault those who try to move upward. I think Brian Kelly, if he proves he can recruit, will not be here long in Cincinnati. Cincinnati is not a coaching end point. It's got a small stadium, a small fan base, and a terribly broke and broken athletic department. (Empty basketball seats are costing them a minimum of a million a year. They could even have been hoping to get the 2million for a Brian Kelly buyout!)

In any case, Kelly is crazy if he turns down a Penn State, Alabama, or Michigan. He has no ties here.

Cincy should pray for Kerry Coomer's quick training as a college coach. He had the best defensive backs in the Big East this year. Curiously, I'm sure KC would not leave this area.

I'm equally sure that he could recruit this area.

I often wonder why Athletic Directors allow these coaches to interview at other schools when they have a contract. You hear about it all the time: Some State University has given their head coach permission to interview at Some Other State University. Why no hold someone to the deal they agreed to? I want out of my apartment lease, why can't I just find another place and tell my current landlord that I found something better? Oh wait, I have a binding contract.

Exception to the rule: Sweatervest.

So, is the moral of the story "stay where you are, be happy with what you have and be happy with who you are at the moment ? " Sounds like a case of someone who "made it" with 2 great gigs calling out those who have not yet attained their career goals !

The fall from the pinnacle is often swift, regardless of the time invested in the climb.

Funny how tenured and entrenched university leaders complain about the "business" of athletics while reaping enormous financial windfalls.

There is no "morality" or "obligation " issue here, merely individuals and organizations acting in their own best interests.

Other exception to the snake/rat rule - JoePa.

By the way, Penn State job won't open up until JoePa or Bobby Bowden croak. They both want the record.

Michigan can't hire anyone - bet they've called Brian Kelly. Hmmm.

"Why no hold someone to the deal they agreed to? I want out of my apartment lease, why can't I just find another place and tell my current landlord that I found something better? Oh wait, I have a binding contract."

Same reasons teams trade players when they "demand" to even though there is no obligation to trade them. Because they are under a performance contract and paying 10 mil to a guy who is frustrated, pouting, and not playing well isn't worthwhile.

If you want out the lease you could treat the place with crap but your landlord can hold you accountable for that. A court can't hold an athlete (or a coach) accountable for not trying his hardest.

Sweatervest had a contract at YSU and broke it and left.
Please don't drink the KoolAid.

Nearly all coaching contracts contain an escape clause which is agreed to by the team he works for. For the most part, when a coach leaves a job to take another, he's simply exercising his contractual right. It's why Bob Huggins could leave Kansas State but the players he recruited could not leave. Kansas State held those players to the contract they signed. Get a grip, this is not the same as an apartment lease!!!

sweatervest was there for 15 years and turned down several D-1 schools including miami in florida. Stop drinking the hateorade. Idiot!

who wants a disgruntled/unhappy coach for the rest of his contract?

I'm not saying that there aren't more car dealerships in Columbus than there are in Youngstown to entice players.

He may have had other chances to leave and turned them down.

BUT....Sweatervest had a contract at YSU and broke it and left.
So again, please don't drink the KoolAid.

Headline: Michigan Hires West Virginia's Rodriguez

I hear WVa had a 4 million buyout on Rodriguez. It didn't begin to faze Michigan.

Folks, if WVa is a stepping stone, then get over it about UC. You get a good coach and he's gone.
