Going home to watch the Bearcats
It doesnt matter where you live now, or how long you've lived there. Where you grew up will always be Home.
I went home Saturday, same as every year when the Bengals play in Baltimore. Fly to BWI, point the car south, end up in Bethesda. Eat at the Tastee Diner -- 2 scrambled, bacon, rye toast, drive to Great Falls -- amazing cataracts on the Potomac River, perfect fall afternoon, nobody around -- drive past Home, where I havent lived in 35 years, smile wistfully, feel the shiver roll up the back of my neck. . .
Then head for the pub with the 2 TVs showing Ohio State and UC.
About UC: Amazing. They manhandled the 13th best team in the country. B. Mauk was creative, gutsy, accurate. But the defense stole the day. Physical, fast from sideline to sideline, dominant in a way I've never seen. Something else: What a nice coaching job from B. Kelly, who has effectively rallied his players from what could have been a freefall, after the 2 losses. He's using Dantonio's talent, but he's getting more out of it than Dantonio ever did. The guy down at PBS might ask for an audience.
To the game today, which almost certainly will be a letdown after a perfect Saturday at Home.

Bearcats win. Bucks lose. Can't think of a better day than that.
When they announced the OSU loss, Nippert errupted in an applause so loud I bet the folks in Bethesda, Maryland could hear it.
Sounds like you feel about Bethesda the way I feel about Cincinnati. Don't know why, but there will always be a part of me that wishes I could make it back someday.
Paul - is it safe to say that the traffic was a rude adjustment? I used to live in Arlington, VA and still have family in the area and they all say the same thing when they come to visit Cincinnati - on a Saturday or Sunday when we are on I-71 or 75, they wonder where the cars are! I kid you not (non-DC-area past/present residents), I-66 in Arlington to beyond Fairfax can still be gridlock on a Saturday afternoon.
It's hard to believe a place like Great Falls exists so close to DC. When people see the Potomac in pictures, it's this quiet, still tidal river. Only 10 miles NW of Georgetown are huge rapids, waterfalls, and cliffs. There's little to no development in that area although the crowds can get a bit much. One lasting memory of Great Falls...one broken ankle! I still miss the place though.
It's probably fun to watch any hometown team win, but UC football winning is an entirely new thing. It was nice to watch the Bengals win, but 7 FGs and no TDs says that there's a cloud to be found behind all that silver lining. The Bengals had defense today, but their lack of a running game hurts them.
About UC...the b'ball UC. They're poorly coached. Say what you want about young team, new team, etc., but the bottom line is their level of play is to run up and down the court, and it's pretty unimaginative.....I keep thinking 'high school.'
Call me negative, but I don't think Cronin's got it. Apparently, he's great at closing a sale, but I'm not sure he's great at closing the right people. That's probably what Pitino and Huggins did for him. Pointed him in the right direction.
You're right Doc! I've been blessed to be able to travel all over the world. I've visited most of Europe, much of Asia and just about every place I've desired to visit in the United States. There is no place like the place we call home!
Doc,
I know it is going to be talked about this week a bunch... but with UC's crushing win over #13 UConn over the weekend the upcoming game with WVU is huge.
I believe it is the biggest college football game the city of Cincinnati has ever seen.
Perhaps something back in the Gillman erea was on the same magnitude.... but I wasn't born yet!
Not to get too off-topic here, but I went to the UC-BGSU hoops game last night...that was painful. I disagree with the earlier poster that they are poorly coached. Cronin's got the credentials to win at this level and I like his energy - he's certainly got some Bobby Knight in him (looked to me like he broke his clipboard over his knee in a timeout??). But it doesn't look like the talent is there - yet. The number of buckets they missed in the paint was really disapointing.
Hey, ADMS... you nailed it... 630 Sat. night I-95 North between DC and Baltimore, bumper to bumper 5 mph...
paul can u write something about how UC got snubbed by espn game day...
the biggest game in UC HISTORY and a big east championship on the line and they go to ann arbor where both big teams are ranked worse than UC and WVU...
not to mention, game day doesnt go to one big east game all year... is there a bias
PD, here's a contrast that goes into your "Kelly is the PR Guru in Cincy Sports" file.
Kelly's team loses ugly and he goes out of his way to say that he, the coach, did a terrible job of coaching.
Cronin's team loses ugly and he goes out of his way to say it's a bad team. (Those dirty dogs)
Nancy should make Mick sit in on Brian's "PR 101" class.
Ahh yes, the obligatory OSU bashing from a UC fan. The OSU fans cheered when the scoreboard announced the UC/UCONN score.
U Conn no more the 13th best team in nation than OSU was #1, Boston College #2 or South Florida # 5. UC improved, but nowhere near top SEC or Big 12.
Too bad UC will wind up in International or Humanitarian bowl: great bowl matchup would be UC-UK (can't happen.)
Gator Bowl vs. BC, UVa, or Florida St would be good test for UC. Or--Sun Bowl vs. Cal - Hmmm ?
The mistake ESPN is making is they are probably thinking lets do Gameday at WVU, next week, when they hook up with UConn.
Lemme guess... Georgetown Prep...
Hey, 851... not hardly... churchill
Bearcats!!!!
I know its two weeks later: but if this comes to fruition - someone needs to complain. After last nights crushing of Syracuse, I read the latest bowl projections. I saw that the Sun Bowl (with nearly 2 million payout) was likely to feature Oregon State (who we crushed) vs UCONN (who we really crushed). And we're going to Charlotte, with a mear payout of 750K??? That's complete and utter mishmash.
