Rau'shee Warren

He'll be the first US boxer in 32 years to qualify for consecutive Olympics. Warren was a light flyweight (106 pounds) in Athens in '04... he'll be at 112 in Beijing, after winning a world title over the weekend. The determination needed to train 4 years for 1 shot is to be commended. Warren is the latest in a long line of Cincinnati fighters to go for the gold. I'll have him on Sports Talk tonight, along with Mick Cronin... also checking in with a Reds guy in Sarasota, where today they're voting on whether to pay for improvements to Ed Smith Stadium... if rejected, will most likely mean a Reds spring training move... anyone who's had the pleasure of visiting Sarasota in March knows what a loss that'd be, especially if the team opts for Arizona...

As much as I'd love to see the Reds play spring training games in Arizona since it'd be closer to home, I think I'd be the only person in Metro Phoenix who would show up to the ballpark in March wearing a Reds jersey. There aren't nearly as many ex-Cincinnatians in Phoenix as there are people from Chicago, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Iowa, Nebraska and Western Missouri.

Besides, most Ohioans know Florida better than they do the Buckeye State, the only exception to the rule being the Indians, who used to hold Spring Training in Tucson. (check out the first scenes from the film "Major League", showing the Indians old spring training facility, Hi-Corbett Field in Tucson, for reference)

The majority of Ohioans I've encountered in Arizona are from Northeastern Ohio, anyway.

The Reds need, what, $16 million more for their facility? Here's an idea, why don't they stop sucking at the teat of the taxpayers and put the money up themselves?

You spread that out over a number of years, as corporations must, and the annual budget cost would be relatively minuscule. And it would be THEIR project. They wouldn't have to answer to anybody else about what they want to do with it.

Besides, when you consider the cost to move the entire operation to another city -- be it in Florida or Arizona -- it mitigates the actual cost of the upgrade, anyway.

Finally, think of the good PR spin their marketing dept. (such as it is, heh) could put on such a decision. The goodwill it would engender would be invaluable. Reds fans could use some good news.

Regarding Warren, I followed with interest his trek through Worlds. (Not that you'd have noticed, from reading the Enquirer's nonexistent coverage of it.) It is an inspiring story. Too bad nobody in his hometown knows about it.
