Adam Dunn

Interesting that Kriv said no long term deal is "imminent." Also, smart. Before the Reds commit to Dunn, he needs to commit to them: Drop some weight, add some leadership qualities, work on your defense etc. Losing the tonnage would prolong his career and maybe allow him to get to a few more balls in the gaps. Insiders are convinced Dunn is ready to be a leader, cite his apparent anger last year at B. Arroyo, out late night before a start. We'll see. Meantime, picking up the option was the only option.

Glad, too, that they did the same for Hatteberg... $1.85 mil is a bargain for a productive, smart hitter who could be a very good influence on Votto. No one is more prepared than Hatteberg.

Now, go get D. Willis and a few others and let's go. I dunno about you, but I'm starting to feel OK about the '08 Reds. Probably, it's my desperation talking.

Live big, Tom Hume.

I am starting to feel optimistic too, but then I realize I am always optimistic about the Reds. Why isn't there a Redsized disease?

After all, who are we kidding? We don't have enough pitching and are unlikely to get enough.

You're optimistic because they signed back some of the same guys they had last year? Wow, doesn't take much to get you excited.

I'm feeling good about the Reds next year too. There's too much offensive talent to be bad, and the bullpen was solid down the stretch last year. If Bailey can stay healthy and have a stronger year and Kriv adds at least one good starter, we should get by in that department.

8:22,

You make a fair point, but a new manager and dropping some couple of dead weight contracts (Milton, Cormier, Guardado) to free up money for free agency have to count for something...

Good interview with Hatte last night on WLW. Tells me something that a pro like him is pumped up about playing for Dusty.

2nd the feelings here about Hatteberg. It's a pleasure to watch him play. He's a great example for any player that wants to improve.

Dunn is 6 feet 6 inches and weights 240 lbs, that seems about right. He is a big guy, he is going to weigh alot. I don't see why everyone is so tough on his weight.

Please don't pick up Willis. Last season his ERA was over 5, his WHIP is 1.6, his K/9 is 6.4, and h/9 was 10.56. All of those numbers point to a pitcher in decline. His style doesn't lend towards durability, it also is based on deception which can be figured out after a few years. Why overpay for a staring pitcher? Bailey is all ready up, and Cueto isn't too much further. Belise could make a step forward. A free agent would be a waste of money, when the Red's may already have the talent in house.

Three free agents the Reds should sign:

Cordero
Mariano Rivera
Kerry Wood

Those three would sure up the pitching.

That 240 must have come off some roster somewhere. He hasn't seen 240 for a long time. Try 300. He was admitting 275 last year.

Is it just me or is it borderline insanity to think we already have enough pitching "in house"? Only one solid, proven pitcher in Harang. Arroyo has one solid season under his belt. Can't count on big seasons from Bailey or Cueto. Others not worth mentioning. Talking about the playoffs, folks. Be smart and aggressive. Free agency, trades. 2000-2007 says going with our "in house" guys has been a bad idea.

10:44,

Enough pitching talent in-house? I believe we had the worst bullpen ERA in the bigs and starting pitching not in the top half. That tells me we don't have enough in-house and desperately need a solid, consistent set-up guy and a 3rd legit starter to contend.

Paul, I am not that good. Also, you can't just "go get me".

There goes Redreporter using statistics and facts to make an argument. No name calling either. Clearly that person is not familiar with how things work here in the blogosphere. **to be read as tounge-in-cheek**

6:03 Russ >> facts & statistics??
You're not from "around here", are you?

And if you ain't name-calling, you ain't "relevant".

Think this is bad, try the "Comphrensive Safety Plan".

Sad part is majority don't know what you're talking about.

240? Really? When, in 12th grade??

Look. I am a legit 6'6", and as skinny as a rail compared to Dunn...I weigh 235-240. While I cannot hit like him, I could run circles around him....there is no reason that he cannot train properly on his running and weight to become less of a defensive liability.

Dunn is more a legit 275-280, though last year he had dropped weight as compared to 2006. At the end of '06, he was pushing 3 bills...

He needs to get down more in the 250-255 range in order to be at least a marginal outfielder..

I could take his bat, if he can play at least marginal defense.

I agree with earlier poster. Team make-up same as last year.
I'm excited for last place! WhoooHaaa!

Wow; you folks have really given up on the Bengals. here it is November and you are still talking baseball! I can assure you that Pittsburghers are not talking about the Pirates at the moment -- of course they probably don't talk about them in season for that matter.

What is diifficult to understand, is:
- if you're getting paid 10 mil/year (+/-), can't you at least make an effort (see Dunn's weight/defense, Grif's home run trot on his double (turned into singles)).

We all should have their "problems".

While I'm sure Dunn could stand to lose a bit of weight he certainly seemed very improved in the outfield this past season. Hopefully he's still going to keep striving to improve and people can keep striving to try to find reasons to complain about him.

All wounds heal with time.

In baseball it's called the off season.

Still need lots of pitching problems shored up.

Offensively things are becoming more solid and borderline good.

I like Willis. A lot.

Catch him in a monster rebound season.

He is no more washed up than a pig rolling in the pen.

He's money, and I'd love him here.

Look at it this way, if the Reds fade on the vine in August next year, that's a 3 month improvement. Then it's Krivsky for GM of the Year!!

Small victories beat huge losses.

Doc;

You said you do not want Belisle starting in 2008. His numbers are similar to Harangs in 2004.

Harang (2004) V Belisle (2007)

Starts 28 ---- 30
IP 161 --- 177.66
IP/Start 5.74 --- 5.92
WHIP 1.43 --- 1.44
OBA .343 --- .337
SLG .483 --- .482
AVG .280 --- .301
K/BB 2.36 --- 2.91
BB/9 2.96 --- 2.18
K/9 6.99 --- 6.33
HR/9 1.45 --- 1.32

I am not saying he will pitch like Harang next year. I am saying that he wasn't that horrible considering it was his first fulltime big league season in the starting rotation. You gotta like his arm. He has a good fastball with good movement, and a decent breaking ball. If he makes a small improvment in 2008, he will be a solid middle rotation type of pitcher.
