A few things about Chad

Read the Sunday column before you decide I want him traded.
I don't.

Ask yourself where the Trade Chad discussion started. It wasnt in the media.

Read the book I wrote with him. It explains who he is, why he is how he is, and where he comes from.

Read Chapter1. See if it doesnt sound a lot like what I wrote Sunday.

Everything written Sunday has been said to Chad by his closest friends and associates, many, many times, most recently by his mentor Charles Collins, after the New England game. "Channel your emotions properly'' has been the message for years.

Chad doesnt need to attract attention to himself anymore. He's household. He's too old to behave the way he does, on the field and behind closed doors. If you dont think his actions have negative repercussions in a losing locker room, you've never been in a losing locker room.

He's not the reason the Bengals are 2-4, obviously. He's merely today's column and/or talk show topic. I hadnt written about Chad all year, unless you count the fluff I wrote over the summer about his trip to Africa. But as an opinion writer, I'm not going to ignore an issue that has gone national.

If you think I'm tough, check out Ditka, Parcells, Esiason etc on TV and Whitlock in print. I know Chad a whole lot better than any of those people, so I give him the benefit of the doubt.

Bottom line: Skip the celebrating, unless it's with your teammates. Stop giving your emotions free rein. You're almost 30 years old.

Funny thing is, I don't think his teammates care about his celebrations, they're sick of him blowing up at Carson, Marvin, when things don't go his way.

I am impressed that you are able to have and publicize this particular opinion of Chad. Even with your personal relationship with him, you still tell the truth and don't bow down to him for access.

Nice job. Keep it up.

I read the column Sunday and agree, you're just laying out an opinion on his role in the team and their wins/losses.
But I am curious why you didn't run the scenario by him so you'd have some informed opinion from him in the issue, instead of having it be fuel on an ever-growing fire now.
A fire, by the way, that should be under Lewis, Bresnahan, Justin Smith, Madieu Williams etc. a lot hotter than it is under Chad Johnson.

The difference with those National guys is that they are throwing out a lot of quick hits about a lot of situations and teams. My problem with all of this is just because some National guy throws out this Chad quick hit, the media here at the Mayberry Gazzette and the wag the dog radio media talk way too much about this one issue(yes, it is AN issue) like they are totally incapable of talking about the team as a whole and having an intelligent discussion of the Bengals entire situation on the field. There is an entire team of offense, defense, and special teams to discuss. You guys are exactly what you accuse Chad of being. You are focusing on one player. Is the media in this town incapable of discussing the team as a whole?

I love Chad Johnson. Even when he annoys me with some of his antics. Cincinnati would be a much smaller place without him.

Hey, ESPN just reported that T.J. just bought a bigger recliner to put in the locker room than Chad has. No, no, just kidding. Hopefully I clarified that quick enough so the entire Cinti sports media isn't in a frenzy.

Paul,

Just read your column and agree with most you said though have to question one fact, did Chad really "blow up" in the Pittsburgh playoff game? Profootballtalk.com was cited as the source when that "story" broke and they have about as much credibility as an Enron quarterly report.

The celebrations Chad does are fine and entertaining. The blowing up at Carson for the missed pass and especially the talking to the Partiot's head coach in the middle of the game were inexcusable and showed a great lack of respect towards Marvin.

However, just like with Adam Dunn and Griffey, fans in Cincinnati would quickly give up great talent for those they perceive as average hard workers and that is not the way to build championships.

And like you said if the Bengals were 4-2 this wouldn't even be a discussion.

at 7:55 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

5:54, Good point but the fire should be under the person running this team, whoever that is.

Marvin has been sadly unimpressive in every way but what are his options? What authority does he have? Chad wouldn't behave like this if he was playing for Belichick, who apparently has been given the authority to RUN the team.

Mikey has to give his coach some authority, like his Father had. That shouldn't be too hard to understand.

I Read the column - it was stupid. Its based on a false premise- that Chad Johnson has had a negative impact on the team. I've watched every snap, every "outburst"... it just simply isn't true. You may not have said he should be traded- but you did question whether the team really needs him around... thats pretty much the same thing. Why should Chad have to grow-up. He plays a kids game. He shows up on time. Plays hard. Practices hard. Gets involved with charity. He seems like a pretty responsible 30 year old to me. Watch the film - Carson has shown just as much emotion on the field as Chad this year (probably more). Explain the double standard. Chad's positive contributions far outweigh the negative. Hes not Marvin Harrison -so what. He doesn't have to be. There are lots of ways to be successful. We see the Patriots as a reflection of their smug troll-like (& genius) coach. So thats the new trend. But don't forget the 88 Bengals, 85 Bears, late 90s Packers and Cowboys or all of the classic Raiders teams who showed plenty of "unhealthy emotion" and didn't always see interviews as a chance to "say all the right things" - they still won and the fans had a great time watching them. Anyway- better luck next time with the column. You drummed up a lot of interest, but absurd premises can do that sometimes.

Butterball -- I did read the Sunday article; I really don't know where the trade talk started; and I have order your book from Borders.

A lot of the national media started mentioning Chad Johnson as one of the persona who has a negative impact on the entire league. They were citing the article that was basically lumping Chad Johnson together with the likes of Vick, Pacman Jones and Tank Johnson. A toally unfair comparison. What few people talk about is the media attention, and free publicity that Chad generates for the league which does not involve drugs, wife beatings; or gunplay. Somehow, they, or whoever they are, want to compare Chad's on field antics with the off field thuggery of outlaws who should not be in the league. A number of those miscreants were Bengals that got repeated chances by your team's management. Perhaps thats where the perception of a lack of control by Marvin should be directed. But it appears that at least 3/4 of the Cinncinnatti fans can already see that Chad is not the problem of this team if your poll results are an accurate indicator.

One point in your column confused me, I thought I read reports of Chad Johnson later taking ownership for the missed route that caused the tantrum with Palmer. If his local reporters don't even pick up that bit, then if I were Chad I might just be sending my game tapes to New England; maybe they have room for a 4th receiver.

Chad isn't responsible for the Bengals woes much like you can't place the blame on Adam Dunn for the Reds' record.

However, there is such a thing as a winning attitude you'll find in abundance on every winning team(Patriots, Red Sox). On the other hand, Cincinnati teams have their money tied up in players who set a horrible example, whether that be showing the maturity of a 6 year old girl, disappearing in the clutch, or not legging out a double. It's embarrassing.

First of all, when I read quotes from professional athletes refer to themselves in third person, I immediately think of Ricky Henderson. Then I cringe. After my physiological reaction I have to stop and think. Ricky was damn good and probably a guy other pro’s would rather play with than against. The same question was asked about Moss and Owens during difficult times. Often, the answer would sound like this quote from Joe Whiteguy “he is a distraction, he is selfish, and the team will never win with him!" The funny thing is that Joe Whiteguy’s team had a losing record and was looking for answers. It’s strikingly similar to Chad’s team and fans now. The fact of the matter is that injuries have plagued this team for a couple years and our defense makes it tough for us to be a playoff contender. The last time I checked, Chad is not involved in any defensive schemes. God forbid he becomes the subject of defensive schemes by being traded. I think I can see the quote from Chad now “Chad practiced and played with these chumps and Chad can't wait to burn 'em.” Then I cringe about the truth of the matter.

I think the headline was the most divisive part of your article to be honest. "Is Chad Worth the Trouble?" When I saw that, I was shocked. I don't even know how you would begin to justify it. My first instinct was to answer "OF COURSE HE IS!" and not read the article.

I also don't think you can justify writing an article lie that simply because it is a story in the national media. You don't necessarily have to follow their lead if you think they are off base.

About Chad specifically, he obviously brings an energy and excitement to the once lowly Bengals. With that, some people will view him as selfish, but those people have to realize that the same qualities that make him great can also make him seem selfish. Personally I think Chad has it right. Football players are, in fact, entertainers, and he is one of the best.

Hey Doc I made the same point earlier today in Curnette's blog. Celebrate touchdowns and great catches with your teammates. Run back to Carson and show some mutual admiration. The fans love it when the team succeeds and celebrates together. Chad, good fellow, you didn't score your touchdowns all by yourself. Wake up, bro, and grow up. You look too mcuh like a little kid who needs attention all the time. Popping off gets old.

As Paul B. used to drill into his players with an icy comment, act like you've been there before. Learn from T.J.. Keep it real.

That said, you are a great receiver who plays with big heart most of the time. I wonder if your love of the spotlight and its glare has dimmed your focus late in the game enough to explain all the drops in critical times lately.

I wonder how many other Bengal stories are being missed due to this eternal obsession with Chad Johnson. Certainly, there is a broader range of issues to be investigated. Could it be that Marvin chose not to completely squash the rumors about a trade to keep the press on that trail and not, much more rightfully, focus on his shortcomings as head coach?

at 11:55 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The same things that make Chad "funny" when they win are the same things that make him annoying when they lose.

Marvin has enabled this behavior. So, he is complicit.

Or, as Paul Brown used to say, when you get to the end zone act like you've been there before.

at 12:00 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Don't forget the route at the end of the first half of the New England game. Anyone who knows a little bit about reading defenses saw that he ditched the route because he was going to get hit by the safety.

Then........

He threw a fit on the sideline and in the locker room. Mind you, Carson, on the day of the game took all the blame.

Chad, being Chad, didn't fess up that it was actually he who screwed up until four days later.

Yep..... we should keep this guy. He's vital to this team winning 8 games (or less)a year...

Paul,

Great post... thanks for reading my email.

And what if Chad is just a really smart guy who's looked at what the Bengal's trajectory portends for the remaining few year of his football prime?

And what if he's decided that the Bengals aren't going to get there with what they got in any less than 5 years?

And what if he really does think he's good enough to help a contender and to get filthy rich?

And what if the way is being readied for him to get out from under this franchise?

And what if ducks fly?

at 1:52 PM Blogger Unknown said...

My bad on the missed route in question. But just look at how a "malcontent" like Randy Moss is performing for an organization like the Patriots.

at 2:50 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Granted there is a time and place for everything.
But I laugh how people rip this guy for making a childs game played by millionare brats fun again.
I pray that Chad never changes what he does and who he is.
It would be sad.

"Or, as Paul Brown used to say, when you get to the end zone act like you've been there before." Purists drag this out of the "trite" closet when they put forth their idea of what a "good little boy" should be. Paul Brown said this EARLY in his coaching career, possibly while still at Cleveland. In 1982, at the Super Bowl in Pontiac, Brown did the "Ickey Shuffle" for television cameras in Pontiac. Chad is our first true long-catch threat since Eddie Brown. Reportedly, Chad doesn't drink or smoke, has not been involved in any off-field criminal acts. According to one ex-Bengal (now ni media) he works as hard in practice as any player. So what is the problem?

at 3:12 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anyone see the story on Chad done by E:60, the ESPN investigative show? It was on Tuesday evening. I just caught the tail end of it where they spoke about the school he is building and questioning his position as a father figure to his own kids.

at 4:19 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

My problem with Chad is simple. He gives away the running plays with his piss-poor posture and pre-snap stance. He also drops a ton of balls for someone who demands to be in the spotlight.

Other than that, he's a great receiver.

at 7:02 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anyone know where I can get a clip of PB doing the Icky shuuffle, 1982?
Chad doesn't drink, smoke & do criminal stuff, works hard. Really, he's a good guy!

SI story this year quoted Chad in reference to his kids (by?) as saying "I don't have time, right now, to be involved with them as much as I'd like", paraphrased.

Have we lowered the bar this far?

Open Letter to Paul:

Enough. You know you are TOO good to be this soft.

The Enquirer is so soft, it's Charmin & you're "Mr. Whipple."

We're all adults here.

The players, owners, coaches, managers and READERS.

Please, enough of this free ride for Marvin Lewis and his enabling of players like Johnson.

Enough!

I have a good feeling that when you read the NY POST, DAILY NEWS or Boston Herald, that you want to call it like it is when it comes to this team.

Lewis KNOWS he has it easy here in river city - and as he would say in his condescending fashion:

"The paper needs to work harder and do better."

First Off I love Chad Johnson. He has brought that little extra to the field that makes the NFL and, of course, Cincinnati great. But, the last time I checked football was a team sport. So if Chad teammates don't mind him (considering their opinions are really the only ones that count)than why should we?

The cold hard truth is...it's only fun\funny when we're winning.

Words of advice to Chad from Joe Moreno

"Bring Sexy back when we are on top , until then bring some old school in your face hard nose football"

WHO DEY!!

Doc-

What you wrote had to be written. Chad's selfish antics, although fun and positive, turn off teammates.

Here is my observation. I LOVE the controversy. Why? Because the Bengals suck. People lose sight of this sometimes: Sports is entertainment. When the team sucks, we can blame Chad and criticize our local sportswriter even if that criticism is unfounded or grounded in a misunderstanding of what was written!

In the "Lost Decade" of Bengaldom, I would routinely watch Lapham on Sports of All Sorts and await Daugherty's column on Monday to see what new and creative ways the media could rightfully savage the Bengals. It's entertainment, folks.

Bashing Chad is the latest installment of that. I don't think any of it is mean-spirited and the "trade Chad" talk gives us something to do as the gray, rainy fall sets in...and the Bengals return to the place they'll always be with the Brown family running things.

Keep stirrin' it up Paul and we'll keep reading (and listening)!

Bengals beat the Steelers, 31-27.

how come no new comments have been posted in a while? Doc getting tired of the criticism?

"My problem with Chad is simple. He gives away the running plays with his piss-poor posture and pre-snap stance. He also drops a ton of balls for someone who demands to be in the spotlight.". Really? That's a new one. Not a single item in the printed or electronic media has mentioned him giving away plays. The Bengal playcalling is predictable, except for a double-reverse play against the Jets, it looks like Paul Brown is still on the sideline (ie., draw play up the middle). Chad didn't run one route to it's expected full length, and yes, he should have run that route. "Drops a ton of balls"? What have you been smoking?

at 7:53 AM Blogger Osogato said...

Ridiculous article today Doc. No one should ever, under any circumstances, sell their tix to Steelers fans. Bye bye home field advantage. I was at the last Reds series this year against the Cubs, you know, the one that was about 80-90% Cubs fans, and it was just sickening. And crowd support isn't as big a deal in baseball as football.

at 8:37 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

An early comment commended Paul for being honest in his observation of Chad since he has written a book with Chad and has a personal relationship with Chad. True, but maybe now we can see a column(with honest observations) about how the Reds could spend more on player payroll if it wasn't for the Reds receiving inferior rights fees from WLW radio and Foxsports T.V. with both of these entities having their lowball "take it or leave it" negotiations. But would Daaaaaryl Paaaaarks really let Paul do that and keep the radio gig, too?

Here is some "tongue in cheek" food for thought.

Let no one say Cincy is a racist town, toward their athletes again!

Why does Chad get a free ride as opposed to Adam Dunn?

Like Dunn, Chad puts up some huge numbers, but fails to do it most, when it really counts and the game is on the line.

Chad's numbers will be among the tops in the NFL again this year, much like Dunn's will be in MLB.

Dunn is criticized frequently for his off physical conditioning and Chad eats so much Mickey D's that the excess fat and sodium content in his system, continues to have him cramping and heading to the lockers early for IV treatments.

Dunn has at times showed up big and hit his share of walk-off HR's, yet Chad, according to the Taliban looking columnist in Sports Illustrated, says that during the big games, Chad breaks out his "David Copperfield Disappearing Act"

Does Chad get a free ride because of skin color?

The average sports fan in this city devotes almost as much time to talking about what 3 second celebration dance Chad will do each week as to how we stack up against our opponent.

(Note to Chad...your list is always a sham by the end of the year. You get covered like one of Michael Jackson's kids at least 4 times a season. I love your numbers and your ability, but as an "educated fan", you can entertain me the same way TJ does, make catches and score TD's and don't develop skillet hands in the biggest games.)

Adam Dunn has not found himself involved in any lawsuits about give-a-ways and girlfriends.

Maybe Adam could get a new gold grill, call him self "Quattro-Quattro" and come up with a few long ball celebrations, so he could start..."entertaining" us.

Maybe Dunn could start with a Texas Two Step, or a Long Horn Leap into the Diamond Seats. Perhaps an Urban Cowboy Jig or grab his bat and simulate Sissy's bull ride while seductively waving his helmet in the air on top of home plate. What about proposing to Gapper?

Would we then love him and like Steve Perry from Journey...(cue the music) "come to Dunn with open arms"

This whole attitude thing and cry for attention on Johnson’s part could just be a ploy to position himself for a trade…by design.

I think I called this one right down to the tee about two years ago when everyone was drinking the "It's just Chad being Chad" cool aid or the "Chad's an entertainer" mantra.

Well let me just define this a little clearer.

As I said a couple of years ago, to anyone who would listen, this guy was a cancer waiting to manifest.

He's related to KeShawn (a well known cancer), and he has Drew as his agent, who is also T.O.'s agent.

Chad has worked to brand himself as a flamboyant personality and has produced big numbers for the last few years.

The Bengal’s gave him a pay raise two years ago to keep him quiet.

Now, Drew and KeShawn are giving him the already proven plan to work himself into a trade while he is still a hot commodity.

He'll get traded and then negotiate another monster payday with a signing bonus. If he doesn’t get the trade, he’ll probably throw Carson under the bus and create a situation that the Bengal’s cannot live with

That's how the money game is played.

And actually, if I was in his shoes...it's not a bad idea.

NFL contacts are not guaranteed, and every player is one snap away from his last paycheck. Cincinnati is not going to become world beaters anytime soon, Chad has become less effective in the past season and a half, T.J. is the clutch guy on the team and Chad pulls a David Copperfield act and disappears in the big games.

Right now is the time for him to try for another big cash grab. He doesn't have a lot of options after football. He's not that bright and broadcasting will probably not be knocking on his door.

He's got several kids to take care of along with a few babies’ mammas that will continue to drain the account long after the career is done.

It's now or never for Nacho Stinko.
