Dusty

Because we're able to communicate quicker than instantly now, everyone's feelings about D. Baker as the Reds new manager were evident several days before he actually got the job. The verdict was resounding: Baker is the least popular choice since Vern Rapp. I said this on the radio last week: I don't understand the condemnation... 1,100 wins, 8 top 2 finishes in 14 years, players respect... he's not LaRussa or Torre, but the cred is there, and why does everyone assume the Reds could do better? Believe it or not, prospective skippers don't grow up dreaming of managing in Cincinnati.

Is Baker the best choice? I'd have held out awhile for LaRussa. But the chances of him coming here dimmed daily. You can't always get what you want. If you try sometimes, you get what you need.

Here's what Baker needs to do to win hearts and games here: Not allow Junior and Dunn to set the clubhouse tone. Stay with J. Votto -- and Keppinger, Hopper and eventually Bruce -- when they slump. Expect from Day One that this team play as a team. Play no favorites. Get yourself a big-time pitching coach. Leo Mazzone is available. Watch the pitch counts of Bailey and eventually Cueto. Lead, because if you don't, nobody else will.

Here's what fans need to do: Open your minds.

You know how I know this is a good hire.......because the majority of the people are against it.

It all comes down to talent and players. The other issues are secondary at best. I think the silence of Napoleon Brennaman over the last few days has been interesting. May it please continue.

I don't own the team, I don't run the team. I'm a fan of 70 years and have seen a lot of ups and downs; that's baseball. Give the guy a chance. He's had a lot of success, and I always enjoyed the way he played the game with the Dodgers. Get rid of the coaching staff except Billy Hatcher and let's get a top pitching coach, preferably Leo Mazzone.

Couldn't agree more, Paul. Reds bloggers are UP IN ARMS, judging from their comments.
But, most didn't want Pete returning either because he was not only inexperienced, but of course incompetent. So we needed a big name manager with experience who could handle the clubhouse. You know, someone with a track record of success!
Well, now we have one and the reaction is "HOW COULD CASTELLINI & KRIVSKY HIRE THIS GUY? THEY ARE SO STUPID!!!
Personally, I think the reaction would be similar no matter who the Reds hired. The vitriol expressed does bother me, though. I wonder what is driving it, especially against someone who's been Manager of the Year 3 times -- and, by the way, has managed exactly ZERO games for the Reds so far.
I imagine we'll hear from many of the naysayers quite shortly, and it won't be polite.
GO REDS!

Is it racism? Let me give some examples. Sabo, Casey and Freel all spent significant time on the DL while playing here. Were any of those players criticized? NO! Now, let's look at Eric Davis, Griffey etc. Need I say more?

Since Torre and LaRussa are still under contract and therfore unavailable, who's a better candidate than Dusty Baker?

Paul, please don't tell me you are drinking the 'give the guy a chance' Kool-Aid either. Dusty's chances read like a 'chance graveyard'...Giants, Cubs. JT Snow, Joe Nathan, Armando Rios, Corey Patterson, Mark Prior, Kerry Wood. Fail, declined to play, fail, fail, fail, and fail.

Such an incredibly spotty record, with documented shortcomings and consistent lack of good judgment in identifying good positions to put his players in. An incredibly uninspiring, out-of-touch decision that the fans of this city will be paying for again.

Let's just hope Kriv-dog and our new President Walt Jocketty can poach a few players in trade this winter.

1:43, it's not all about racism when it comes to how cincinnati rejects their ball players, look at the vilification of Adam Dunn, and the treatment of Barry Larkin in his later years

as for the dusty hire, i cant see how anyone can not see him as an improvement of dave miley and jerry narron

Sure, Paul, we're just a bunch of dumb fans that haven't been watching this franchise for the past 15 years. We have no reason to be skeptical of this hire.

You're right, Paul. Not Everyone dreams of managing the Reds. But I can give you two names that were interested. Brenly & Mackanin. I won't waste your space here, but I can easily make a case for either of them over Baker. Easily.

Paul,
Here are the pitch counts for Mark Prior in September of 2003 (he turned 23 years old that month)

131
129
109
124
131
133

Prior has averaged 82 innings per year for the last 4 years since then.

The real question is, why do you have so much contempt for your readers? We're not all rubes, you know.

It really doesn't matter who the manager is if management does nothing to upgrade the talent level on the 25 man roster - particularly in the area of the bullpen .

i live in chicago and watched dusty destroy the cubs over the course of his 4 years. luckily they had the money to buy their way out of the mess he left behind. the reds aren't so lucky. this move could set this franchise back years. this is a terrible, terrible move. i feel bad for the fans of cincinnati.

I'm not a big fan of the move but for everyone's sake let's hope this works out well.

Rusty Dusty with his toothpick popping out of his mouth. Hes going to swallow that toothpick before June of 08. Thats how long I give him and the Reds before they are done for the season and finish less than average 500 baseball again.

Rusty Dusty ... Enough said !

The Reds and the Bengals are determined to screw up every year leaving the fans of this city feeling cheated while they sit back and reap the money in from that big contract they signed. Im so tired of getting my hopes dashed every spring and fall this time Im done with both. I will jump on the Colts bandwagon for football and I will now root for the Cleveland Indians. Better than taking it up the rear twice a year from our lousy sports teams.

Doc:

Agree 100%. I would have gone with Mackanin but the fans'reaction to the hiring of a 3-time NL manager of the year with three division titles and an NL pennant on his resume is baffling.

I think it's become the natural instinct of many Reds fans to jump into hyper-critical, I'm-smarter-than-everyone-else mode whenever any decision is made. There'll be plenty of crow to go around if they win 95 games next year with Dusty as skip.

by the way, nice semi-subtle stones reference.

Who cares the Reds are going to continue to suck. Dusty or Torre when you have no PITCHING AND NO DEFENCE you can not win ball games. Period. I could be the greatest manager in Reds history if I had Pitching and Defence. Pitching wins ball games. Defence wins ball games! Not big names, it does not matter if someone is black or white, it does not matter if your a big mouth, or throw water coolers! Remember the Nasty Boys? Pitching people... without it they could bring Sparky back and we will not win!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wake UP!!!

anon 1:43 here is the problem and it's not race... when Cincinnati people go to the ball park they expect the big names to be there and hit home runs every time they come to bat. They don't understand baseball, and they don't understand that this is not video game. Let's start with Davis how many Borgman cartoons did he have of him Jumping up and making the catch over the fence? How many times did the media make him out to be the greatest player on the Reds? How many times did he get hurt trying to live up to that? People want to touch that and if they did not they felt personally cheated when that person is not on the field, although just last night the "star" gave up his body to keep the Reds in the playoffs. Dang it they went to the ball game, to see the star and if they did not see the "star" they got hurt on a personal level.( If anyone is reading this and thinks he's wrong then if you don't care about that stuff then why do you get upset if you don't get and autograph?) To continue Jr. he was supposed to be what the Reds built a franchise with. The problem is that JR got old. JR was not the same as he was when he was 17. If Jr was drafted by the Reds and sent most of his time here then he would be just as loved as Pete, and Barry. The problem is most Cincinnati fans are fans of fair weather, not of the games being played. Chad Johnson anyone? Let’s go over the other list that you wrote Sabo, Casy, Freel. Freel runs like Pete everyone in this town can not get over Pete and they want someone to be Pete again. Sabo he is dumb lovable guy that played heart out, I cannot put Sabo in the same league as JR or Davis. Casey is the same reason for Freel. People in this town want another PETE!!! Guess what Cincinnati there will never, never ever be another Pete. I always wondered instead of a team of Pete’s why we would not want a team of Morgans or Benches ( you people that are in the Hall of Fame). Hey Cincinnati team that’s on the field that is who is representing our town. They are Cincinnati. Either starts supporting the team or buy all the "Big Red" stuff and sit around during baseball season and watch the DVD's some of us live today and don't remember the Big Red Machine. So what does this have to do with Baker signing Torre has won world Championships, just like Marvin Lewis they have a ring. If Baker would be famous for having a ring and not saying the things that he said in the media about race they would welcome him with open arms and he could have said the things that he said in the media if he had a ring and Cincinnati would still welcome him with open arms.
I think by typing this I now understand why Pittsburgh fans are so crazy. The team that is on the field represents the town not just the past. Thank God! PS Dunn sucks let him go now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Completely uninspired hire and am very disappointed with Red's decision. We'll never know what type of manager Girardi, LaRussa or Brenly (to name just a few), but we know EXACTLy what we're getting with Baker. UGH!

You implied if Pinella or Girardi would have handled Bonds the same way Baker did in SF--obviously you have no sense of these two if you think they would have. Trust me, history would have turned out much differently today had SF had a manager with some cahones during Bonds stranglehold on the Giants clubhouse the past 10 years.

I echo Anon 8:12's sentiments. I too am from Chicago and watched Dusty in action for 4 years. It's not his handling of pitchers and youngsters that's his most annoying feature though. It's the complete apathy that he and his teams. He was there solely for a paycheck, and his teams played the same way - and he didn't expect/demand anymore.

And his rabbit ears and sensitivity to any criticism is legendary. You think Dunn and his mommy are bad? Wait til you get a load of Dusty.

It's gonna be a long 3 years, Reds fans. I feel bad for you. You deserve better.

What is this guy talking about?

at 5:49 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, anon 11:34 >> he doesn't know what he's talking about either.

It was a stream-of-conscious thing just before he passed out.

Paul, wait until you write your first article criticizing him and see what his reaction is. You'll be singing a different tune then.
