UK basketball and such

Isn't it possible that the biggest problem Kentucky fans have with their basketball program at the moment is their own, inflated perceptions? Contrary to popular notion, 25 wins and at least a Sweet 16 appearance every year is not your divine right. I look at UK hoops the same way I see Alabama football, though to a lesser degree. The glory days are gone, not because the program has declined considerably, but because everyone else is catching up. The days of kids dreaming of going to UK to play for the 'Cats are done, just as they have been at Alabama, for many years. Instead of facing that reality, 'Bama fires Mike Shula a year after he wins 10 or 11 games, and UK fans now think Tubby Smith should go.

Maybe he should. But don't expect the next guy to suddenly restore the program to Ruppdom, or even Pitino-hood. The landscape has changed.

Someone please tell Jim Boeheim to stop complaining about his NCAA snub and start scheduling a little better. The Orange played one road game before Jan. 7 -- at Canisius. Ooooh.

And forget expanding the tournament. It works fine as is. Every year, some school or 2 will complain about missing out. That'd be true with 65 teams or 265.

Also: Even as we agree that the little guys give the tournament a lot of its first-weekend appeal, we really don't want to see those teams beyond a week from Friday, do we? As much as we like Winthrop, Holy Cross, Creighton and Oral Roberts, a Final 4 with more than one of them would be less than thrilling...

I talked to Doug Penno yesterday, the Miami senior who banked the shot to beat Akron last Saturday. Great story, great kid. It's the sort of uplift that keeps me doing this. Read it in today's (Tuesday's) Enquirer.

And I saw 300. Epic.

I think you make a fair point about UK and the "Big Blue Nation." I've felt for several years that parity was making its way into college basketball and you can see it by looking at the litany of National Champions over the past 15 years. You no longer see a dominance by any one team as you used to see with UK, UNC, Duke, and UCLA. There are enough good players around now that most every team has at least one or two top notch players.

That said, UK needs to do a better job of recruiting better players. Tubby needs to look at the type of players who give his team trouble and try to corral some of them within his program. And, having a McDonald's All American label doesn't guarantee success at the college level. (see Crawford, Joe)

I still bleed Blue but I'm realistic enough to realize that college basketball "is what it is" and no one school will probably ever dominate the landscape for a long period ever again.

You are right on about the unrealistic expectations of UK fans. The great run from '96 to '98 spoiled everyone. They don't remember that Rupp didn't have runs like that in his last 20 years and Hall never had a run like that. As a season ticket holder I am as disappointed as anyone else in the last couple of years but I think Tubby is a good coach, a better person, and he should be given the chance to improve the performance. Recruiting is his achilles heel. He needs to bring in some fresh blood to help in that area.

Paul, I like Miami and Coles very much, but I did feel for Akron a little. Joyce and Travis played in LeBron's shadow in high school, and then in this, their last year, they had a chance to shine in their own right. From all accounts they are good kids. And then the NIT snub. I'm sure when that Miami shot went in they still thought they'd have more games to play. This has got to be tough for those kids.

That Penno shot was unbelievable! A game-winning, bank-3 at the buzzer to punch a ticket to the Big Dance!?! Come on....that only happens in movies.....and only in movies like Teen Wolf. Unbelievable.

Doc. You are probably right that Syracuse probably could have scheduled non-conference a little better, but still, 10-6 in the Big East is still 10-6 in a pretty good league. What did Stanford do that was so special?

The issue I have is the commitee talks out of both sides of their mouth. On the one they say go on the road and compete. Did that help Drexel? Then they say Drexel didn't do well in the league. Did that help Syracuse? 10-6 in the BE is still 10-6 in a very good league. UC beat the A-10 champ, the MAC tournament champ, and one of the finalists in the ACC tourney. How'd they do in the BE? DFL. Other than G'town the BE got no respect from the commitee. The process is too political, and too arbitrary.

Darn us fans for expecting a top notch program. Maybe if Reds/Bengals fans expected a little more medocrity wouldn't be the standard for sports in Cincinnati. I guess the product put out by the Enquirer reflects the lower standards of its senior management which is why often times it is best for lining a bird cage. Go big blue! Tubby's a great coach but poor recruiter that will change with staff changes this offseason.

Yes, I have absurdly high expectations for UK. Like, say, maybe they'll spend some significant time in the rankings. The last two years have seen UK slide from a consistent top 25 place. And while it doesn't mean anything in the end, it says something about how the program is viewed nationally. Yes, there is parity, but other schools have at least managed to stay in the top 25, while UK's quality has slipped to a point where they only occasionally can be considered one of the 25 best schools in the country.

I hadn't screamed so loud with joy when Penno hit that shot since I got a Boomer autograph for Christmas when I was 8. That was incredible! Has to be the biggest shot in Miami University history. (Not the same as UCLA or Duke, but still...)

Why can't we just come out and say it? The Big Blue Nation is still adjusting to having African-American players...let alone a coach.

Anon 12:13,
You just won the award for most ignorant blog comment of the year. Have you seen any negative comments on this board about Tubby? Last I checked everyone hear has said that they believe Tubby is a good coach. Get off the race issue you ignorant fool. Tubby is still one of the top-10 coaches in all of college basketball.

Of course UK fans are going to have enormous expectations for the basketball program. That doesn't mean they are racists. Last I checked, white coaches/players such as Joe B. Hall, Eddie Sutton, Jared Prickett, J.P. Blevins, Josh Carrier, Ryan Hogan and even Pat Riley have drawn their fair share of criticism from UK fans. Meanwhile African-American players such as Kenny Walker, Tony Delk, Tayshaun Prince, Sean Woods, Chuck Hayes, Wayne Turner, Anthony Epps, Sam Bowie and Jack Givens are among the most revered players in the history of the program.
