I can't resist writing about Junior
Confession: I saw the Seattle newspaper story re Junior yesterday morning, and swore I wouldn't add to the discourse about it. It's more Junior melodrama, fueled equally by the player and the media. When it comes to Griffey, we've written more words about nothing in the last seven years than I care to remember. I fully include myself in that indictment. If Griffey thinks everyone with a pen is insane, he has a point.
Now then...
Junior has decided he is in Cincinnati, but not of it. Fair enough. Just be prepared for the backlash. This is a small place, which takes its teams and its heroes personally. We don't leave in the middle of the 6th of a 2-2 game to beat the traffic. Fair or not, we like to think "our'' players and coaches love us as much as we love them. We are incredibly judgmental when they goof up. See: Johnathan Joseph.
Griffey has never goofed up. He is an antidote for all the Bengals shenanigans. Good dad, good husband, clean liver. Good person, basically. He gives of his time locally, just not publicly.
And he has a pair of rabbit ears that would put Bugs Bunny to shame. Add to that mix a sensitivity not usually seen -- or at least shown -- by pro jocks, and you can see why he feels how he does. That's too bad, because if Junior chose to, he could be among the best-loved local stars ever. Regardless, that's not him. We shouldnt pass judgment on anything but how the man plays baseball. And, in my opinion, how as a 37-year-old future Hall of Famer, he shows leadership to impressionable younger teammates. What he thinks of his hometown is just a sideshow. The latest in a 7-year run.

Can you give us a link to that story, Paul?
Here you go, courtesy of a Cincinnati transplant living in Seattle (who greatly misses his Montgomery Inn BBQ).

Seattle media to Griffey: You are God.
Griffey to Seattle: Why thank you.
Cincinnati media to Griffey: Wait, Seattle says you're God. What gives?
Griffey to Cincinnati: Screw you, I don't like Cincinnati anymore.
I could be wrong, but I don't think the HOF leaves the uniform decision up to the players anymore. I think a year or two ago, the decided to start making that decision for them.
If I'm wrong, and Junior chooses to wear a Mariners hat in the HOF, I won't be upset. After all, it was in Seattle where he was unstoppable.
I'm not sure he even "works" in Cincinnati. Try running out ground balls, traveling with the team on road trips in September despite the fact that you are on the DL, and...moving to right field without complaining.
So if you reside in Cincinnati but work in Kentucky you now live in Kentucky? I work in Kentucky but lived my entire life in Cincinnati. When people ask where I live I don't say Highland Heights.
Running out ground balls is the most overrated sign of a good baseball player ever. One pulled hamstring running out a grounder to 2nd and you'll see my point.
Jr. has been my favorite player since he came up in the bigs. However, his act is wearing thin on me!!
Mark, people like you are the reason Junior only "works" in Cincinnati.
Let's review how Junior got his injuries (save the most recent one):
Tore his patellar tendon trying to take an extra base.
Dislocated his shoulder trying to make a diving catch.
Tore his hamstring trying to make a diving catch, after pulling his hamstring earlier trying to take an extra base.
Dislocated his big toe trying to go up the wall to make a catch.
You want to complain about him being fragile, go ahead. But saying he doesn't work is total BS.
who lives in cincinnati..rose? bench? larkin? chad johnson? carson? boomer?...all no. Munoz, Collingsworth, Icky Woods (had to through that one in there...is he still selling meat door to door??)
The point is that given a choice, I would rather live in south florida, or palm springs or s. california.
UNBELIEVABLE! You idiots that are ripping Griffey wonder why he doesn't like "working" there. I'm a Reds fan from Indianapolis and I'm always shocked and appalled when I go see a game and hear people bashing Griffey. Do you REALLY think that he gets injured on purpose? I've been disappointed with his injuries too, but the response he gets from you "fans" is ridiculous. If I were him, I'd quit talking to the media completely. It amazes me that in a town like Cincy, with the jokes of UC sports and the Bengals, that Ken Griffey Jr. still seems to be the biggest lightning rod of the city. As for cincymark....let me know the next time you see Dunn run out a groundball.
Griffey doesn't run out ground balls either so what is the difference? I know many fans love this guy, so why don't you go over to Redszone.com and see what I mean. I think it is a slap in the face to the fans of Cincy to state, well, I work there and that is it! No wonder people bash him! The front office needs his PERMISSION to make him move to another outfield position for the better of the team? Who is running the Reds around here?
Yea, just like Junior stated, the fans ONLY come out to see him break records and that is what the owners want to hear, they don't want to see Championships or the playoffs, if they did, Griffey would all ready be gone. The owners are keeping Junior around to fill the seats, nothing more and nothing less. Anyone that thinks otherwise is shortsighted.
Ken Griffey in his prime was a HOF player. The Ken Griffey in Cincinnati is not a HOF player. His body is broken down and he is as sensitive as a little girl. His physical decline has hurt the Reds as much as his salary. As a loyal fan of the Cincinnati Reds, I agree with Griffey, he is not "of this city".
Griffey does not choose his uniform the Hall does, but of course it would be Seattle that was his Glory days.
Injured players don't travel with the team to stay back and rehab often.
Good grief lets leave this molehill a mole hill
The Hall chose the cap not the player. And of course they would chose a Mariner Cap.
And often times injured players don't travel so they can stay home and rehab.
Ever since 2000 when he came here all we heard was hype! Griffey Jr to return Cincinnati to the glory years of BRM. But what has happened? Nothing except in this decade these Reds have managed to be horrible. The worst decade of Reds baseball since the 30's. One losing season after another. I just want a winning season and Griffey to actually to stay healthy and play 150 games plus. If he has one more injury they should trade him get rid of him or whatever.
How about some love for one of the true good guys of the game. It wasn't too long ago that people were debating who was going to be the first to break Maris' record; Mcguire, Sosa, or Griffey. I also remember hearing loud debates over who was the best all around player in the game, Bonds or Griffey. Yeah, he's been hurt. And he may have been surpassed by better performances on the field, but I'll still pay to see the most NATURALLY gifted player maybe in history. Yall can have those other clowns.
Look - the only comparable talent - notwhithsanding 1-2 year wonders - we've seen in two generations of reds baseball is #5. And once Bench realized he had lost it, he quit. And that was after he tried 3B. Maybe for the team, maybe to prolong a career. But Griffey is nowhere as smart as Bench. Play RF for the team? No way! Griffey is about Griffey - it's the way he was raised. And, just like his nemesis A-Rod, he's rich, but will never be a champion.
Good, we don't want to claim you as one of us. Washed up two bit hack
It struck me while reading that article that Jr. seems like a very insecure person.
We thought he was the opposite when he came to Cincinnati. He was on track to be the greatest baseball player ever. He was the most marketable player ever. He was so good that we could have never imagined the rest of his career in Cincy would go so badly.
But we've seen that Jr. is really no different then the rest of us normal folks, some who are insecure ourselves, as well as some who are too sensitive.
Unfortunately for Jr., his insecurities and high sensitivity are on display for everyone to see.
He's really a tough person to figure out. I kinda feel sorry him. I feel like he's been miserable in Cincinnati. Certainly, the injuries took their toll.
It's sad that he doesn't consider Cincinnati his hometown. He's obviously taken to heart the criticisms from fans, talk show hosts, etc., and let it affect him on a very personal level.
Here are the 2006 center field outs table.
Obviously Griffey has been unlucky with injuries but he was clearly the worst everday center fielder last year by these numbers. Playing next to Dunn can't help but it isn't bashing Jr. to say he needs to move out of center.
In addition, he had the worst zone rating of any CF who played at least 100 games last season. Combine that with his continuing to hit 3rd in the batting order despite a .316 OBP. The Reds decrease their chances to win when Griffey is in center.
As a fan I want to see the Reds win. It is not an unfair question to ask how serious the Reds are about winning if the Reds continue to play Griffey in center and bat him 3rd.
So, for perspective.
Let's say you have three kids and a wife who love you in Florida and a high-paying job in Cincinnati where you often get ripped and criticized by the local media and citizens. Which do you call home?
Yeah, but you forgot that he grew up here. It's not just that his wife and kids live in Fla. and he works in Cincy. He grew up in Cincy, works here, forced Seattle to trade him here, and took less money to be here. It seemed then that he thought of Cincy as his home. I think he stated such in that press conference after his trade.
That said, I still love Griffey. When he has his legs under him, his swing is still the prettiest in the game. He still has that power. He can still make those amazing catches. He isn't the HOF player he was, but he's still a good one. I'm guessing the pitchers he faces don't pitch to him as if he's washed up. He's too thin skinned and some fans are too hard on him (he doesn't help himself with these types of comments either), but I think most people are glad he's in Cincy. I hope he can stay healthy for a sustained period and have a good year at the plate.
1. If he wins a ring here, people will be lining up to "understand" him. That's how it works.
2. Then he can build another gate around his gated community.
3. Then jackasses who are drunk and clothed in team gear can take out their miserable existence on Ryan Freel.
