who ragged Junior?

I got this e-mail yesterday, and received Mike's permission to use it in the blog. For what it's worth:

I am actually writing this e-mail to hopefully add some insight into a very misunderstood Ken Griffey story. For years I have seen Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey quoted about the fans who were yelling at Jr. for getting hurt when he was on the ground after he separated his shoulder. I again read a quote about the incident in Jim Moore’s article I just read (I linked from your blog on Jr.).

I was there that day…sitting in my front row season tickets in section 102. He literally got hurt and was on the ground right below my seats.

The two of them generally have it correct, but it was one man that yelled at Ken Griffey about him getting hurt. And it was definitely not a Cincinnati Reds fan. It was in fact a very large and very drunk Chicago Cub fan wearing a Sammy Sosa jersey. The guy was eventually removed from the stadium for being belligerent and starting a fight with a woman half his size.

Normally, I could care less what professional sports figures think about me as a fan. I assume they are just as wrong about our motivations as we are about theirs. But, this one drives me nuts because it gets brought up all the time. Having been there, the truth from my point of view is that if Ken Griffey and Adam Dunn had heard what everyone else was saying, especially to the idiot in question, they would realize that their interpretation of fan support that day was 180 degrees wrong.

Just a little insight…in case anyone wanted to hear a fans side of that particular story.

So let me get this right. The reason Griffey Jr. get more undeserved heat from the fans and the media is because Griffey made the whole thing up? the death threats against griffey Jr. and his family are al false? The FBI really didnt follow Griffey Jr. and his family because a Cincinnati fan really didnt threaten his life? The reason that Josh hamilton and Ryan Freel get more positive press than Griffey Jr. because they realy do like Junior? What a frickn joke

Someone down in Sarasota should print this out and tape on Griffey's locker.

Off the topic Doc, but I hear you may be doing more sports talk this spring on WLW?

Nice I say! I wonder if you could fill us in on this. You and Tracy Jones during baseball season?...hmm now that would be interesting.

Love that the first column after it gets out about the WLW gig is about how great TJ is - sure he's great, he just padded your pocketbook

Hey, 325: So what you're trying to say is I wrote nice things about TJ because he got Furman fired so I could take the radio gig (knowing all along Gamble would turn it down), if that's what I decide to do? Are you serious? Wow, I thought I was cynical. You should quit your day job and start writing sports columns.

Paul,
Two comments this morning.
1) I was at the game when he rounded third and went down. There was more than plenty of booing from lots of people that were "reds fans." I think this city is way too hard on him and I also believe that this "baseball city" knows jack diddly squat about the game. Too many years of crappy squads has basically run the true fans out of town or they haven't followed the team in so long they couldnt name 9 players that take the field every day.
2) Concerning your huggy bear story of today. While I would agree he chose to leave, I would say that this was a direct result of being forced out. Have you ever worked for someone who made your life so miserable that although you would love to stay and work somewhere, it simply is just not tolerable and therefore possible? Yeah he opted to leave, but based on the way this administration treats their employees (coaches... although I know a number of the surgery faculty who will jump onto this bandwagon rather quickly) how can you blame him really?

Cincinnati. You always hear how friendly it is and how it's a great place to raise a family. I believe this is just another myth that P & G created to keep a relatively bright workforce. New York City is a friendlier place than Cincy. Cincy is like the battery commercial dude, daring people to knock it off his shoulder. It keeps getting knocked off, and Cincinnatus keeps runnin his pie hole.Do folks live here because they don't want to pay to live near the beach, or the mountains, or is it because people just want to be in the Midwest so they can complain about the weather or the Sports teams. I think that besides the original band of German homelanders, most people are here because they just like to be miserable complainers. What's the appeal?

Please don't say Skyline Chili. (And you can get Montgomery Inn and Graeter's mail ordered.)

Granted it's easy to take shots. I know, I'm bracing myself for the good riddance responses. Just tell me why people are so miserable here and why they stay.
