maybe there's another book in it
Pete Rose decided yesterday to tell Dan Patrick that he bet on the Reds every day when he managed them. Why'd he say that now? Your guess is as good as mine. I want Rose in the Hall as much as the next guy, but every time he opens his mouth, he's walking backward. I suppose in PeteWorld -- defined by delusion, arrogance and a pathological need to say and do stuff he shouldnt -- Rose believed such an admission would make his bets appear more "honest.'' If only he'd listened to a few, trusted insiders way back when, instead of thinking he could outlast Baseball. It was never going to be as simple as playing long enough to pass Ty Cobb. The sun hasn't set for Rose yet, but it's halfway into the water. And, bless him, Pete's still Pete.

I haved lived lived here for my entire 47 years. Watched Big Red Machine, went to games for a week to see 4192. Was at Riverfront when Rose walked 4 times in a game trying for hit #4000.
While a fan at the time I'm not stupid or ignorant. When will the local masses realize how Rose is playing them for the fool. When he walked into his 1st minor league clubhouse the rules were pretty simple; you can do whatever you want EXCEPT BET ON BASEBALL.
Why do people still think he should get a pass on that and be in Cooperstown? Take off your Rose colored glasses and you'll see the real Rose. A convict and compulsive liar who feels he is still above rules everyone else must live by.
Face it Charlie Hustle is still hustling you if you are a believer.
Sad Pete story. A week-and-a-half ago, I was out at a trade show in Las Vegas. I was walking through the shops at Caesar's Palace, and there was a large sign hanging in front of a memorabilia store: "PETE ROSE HERE TODAY". I was sort of amazed to hear that Pete was in Las Vegas. Anyone else find it strange that Pete Rose was in Las Vegas, given his history? He wants back in baseball's good graces, yet he's hanging for the weekend in Vegas...amazing.
Anyway, there was Pete, sitting behind a long table, his Reds hat on, ready to sign your item - assuming you didn't gamble away your last $99.00 (the price for him to sign a baseball).
In anticipation of high traffic volume, airport-like turnstyles had been set up to guide the masses to where Pete was sitting.
The only problem was, there was no line. No wait to get The Hit King's autograph.
It was a sad sight, actually. The life-after-baseball career Pete could have had...
I'm on the fence on the whole Pete thing. I was not an active defender, but at least felt he should be in the Hall. Then after years of denial he admits he did bet on baseball. I was ticked off. I feel like he wasted 15 years of my time. Now he won't shut up. Sometimes less is more. If he would just shut up he might get what he wants.
I guess I'll take the minority point of view. I was listening to the interview and heard his so called damning quote in full context. What I heard is Pete maintaining that he bet on his team every night... meaning that he always bet on his team. Something that he has always maintained (since his admission to Bud Selig). Nothing new to me. I'm not a Pete apologist, but why people seem to get so much joy out of pounding on a 65 year old guy from a blue collar background, who isn't the best public speaker...
He admittedly trips on the meaning of the things he says. He isn't, wasn't and most likely will ever be a chior boy. But he isn't a leper either.
He isn't the first man to ever fall and eat from the devils' singular apple...
He's not a loser, but a man who has and continues to pay for his mistakes. The punishment is harsh, the one thing he has ever loved has been taken away from him perhaps forever.
I'd agree with Brian, his on field accomplishments should be enough to get him in the HOF.
However, if they elect to keep him out, it will be interesting to see how they treat players that actually cheated the game itself by using steriods. I was glad to see McGuire not make it in, and I hope the same for Palmero. But the true test will be a few years down the road when the all time home run king, Barry Bonds, trys to make it in.
How sad would that be for baseball, your all time hit king and home run king wouldn't be in the HOF.
