negative sports illustrated reds note of the week
While praising Reds GM Wayne Krivsky, SI.com writer Jon Heyman still thinks Mets' GM Omar Minaya is NL exec of the year. Tell me again: How much $ is Omar playing with? He acquires Pedro, Glavine, Beltran and Delgado and that makes him...smart? Sorry, no sale... SI picked the Reds to finish last, picked them at the All Star Break to be the first contender to fade, then decided they had too many old players to stay in it in september... SI's wild card pick was, uh, Colorado.
I'm sure I make too much of this, partly because I worked there for awhile and I know how those people think. But in New York, if it doesnt involve New York, it basically doesnt exist. Thats true for SI, the papers and ESPN, radio and TV... it's all Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, all the time... it's nice to see them try to make up for their myopia, but it's a little late.

I couldn't agree more Paul. The east coast bias of the major networks and papers is only getting worse. I can no longer watch Baseball Tonight on ESPN. If the show is on for an hour, you 30 minutes of Red Sox, 15 minutes of Yankees, and the other 15 minutes involves cramming all the other highlights in, and why every team west of the Hudson River won't make the playoffs.
ESPN has lost its way. I tried watching Sportscenter the other night, and the first 20 minutes was BREAKING NEWS that T.O. has strained his hamstring.....
Yes, it is a little late. The greatest joy for a Midwestern hayseed like me is to go to Saratoga Race Course in August and cash bets on Midwestern horses or jockeys (e.g.,Pat Day before he had to retire) and enjoy ridiculously fat payoffs all because "if it's not from New York, it doesn't exist." Of course Omar Minaya is the current genius. I mean, just because his payroll budget exceeds the GDP of half the countries in the world is no consideration. Live big.

Omar is a better GM than the Mets had before, but no where near the best the NL has to offer, after all, he does have the highest payroll in the NL.
I think can you can makes agruments that execs from Florida, Arizona, Cincinnati or Oakland has all done better jobs. Considering that all these teams are in the bottom ten for playroll and still in the playoff hunt.
I would however, like to thank ESPN for the many years of East Coast bias. I have won a few fantasy leagues due to their 'over-hyping' of Yankees or Red Sox players, especially the pitchers. I have also won several bets against people who have fallen in love with the yanks.
