The Bad Boy

Lots of response from my newspaper column today, 8/23, re the firing of Steve Stewart. Surprisingly, almost all of it was positive and complimentary of Stewart's approach. There is a chance he will be included in the FoxSports mix next year, when the Reds are on TV 145 times. I know he likes living here, has just enrolled his son in school here and wants to stay. Here's hoping a classy pro gets his wish. And it was the Houston radio guys who ragged my lack of baseball savvy in April, when I wrote the Reds only competition would be St. Louis. I will be seeing them today. As it is, the Reds main competition now is themselves. No reason they shouldnt bypass the Cards in the next week to 10 days. Live big, Steve Stewart.

Your column today is right on the money Doc. Any chance the Reds see the outpouring of support on Stewart's behalf, and reconsider?

Agree (as I often do) with your take on Stewart. It took him some time to loosen up in the booth, but I thought he'd made great strides. It's hard to imagine someone handling the situation he came into better than Steve. I enjoyed listening to him and thought that he and Marty had become an entertaining team. We need guys like Steve Stewart in broadcasting. It would be terrific to see him get a chance to be in the FoxSports mix next year. Where can we lobby for that?

It's a shame that someone who calls the game right--professionally and correctly with enthusiasm, is let go. I guess listening to the game is not entertaining enough for people; they need an ex-jock to tell them Adam Dunn swung hard and missed. I think the Reds just did the same thing with this move.

I don't see an outpouring of support for him. He just isn't that good.

As you scornfully disdain analysts, keep in mind that's what Nuxhall was and started out as. It was only when Marty started splitting between radio and tv that he did play by play.

Nice people get fired/laid off every single day for perfectly benign reasons.

Steve Stewart was a decent, good, professional announcer. I am still very glad he is being replaced.

The "2nd seat" in that booth--and make no mistake, Marty is #1--is a key spot to fill. It needs to be someone a little more "rah-rah" for the team, a little more colorful, and less robotic in their call of the game. Marty is the professional announcer. In the 2nd seat, we need pizazz.

Doc--wrong on this one. Grumpy and criticizing the Reds again.

BTW, did you see Dunn's TERRIBLE throw to home at the Wednesday Business Day game. He was soundly booed. Deservedly so. Doc has it right about Dunn.

Paul, I asked for this column a couple days ago and you did not disappoint. Perfect column. Gentleman is the perfect word to describe Stewart and I'll take that any day of the week.

By the way, I love listening to Joe Nuxhall, but after two years of Steve and Marty, it was really hard to hear Joe call games a couple of weeks ago. He's probably out of practice I'm sure, but it wasn't much worst than it was when he was doing it every day. It was almost like he couldn't see what was going on.
My wife, who is not from Cincy and never heard Joe, thought he was looped on something. I had to tell her, nope, that's just Joe.

I think its time for Grande to go. The only way that man could say more would be by saying less. Replace him with Stewart and I will start listening to the FSN broadcasts again. Welsh is decent but Grande needs to beeeeeeeee GONE!

I would have no problem with Steve Stewart replacing George Grande....

For those of us around the age of, lets say 40 and under, Joe and Marty are the gold standard. People may disagree with Marty on occasion but I have never heard a person say anything bad about Joe. Talk about the mayor of Cincinnati... Even out of practice, I smile every time I hear his voice on the radio.

Steve isn't a bad guy and he's not a bad announcer. He had the misfortune to come in after one of the most beloved figures in Reds history. Think about it, Joe and Marty have been with us in our cars and in our homes for most of our lives. Those are tough, if not impossible shoes to fill.

As I said, for those of us of a certain age, anyone in that both besides Marty and Joe sounds funny and just doesn't seem right. That's not Steve's fault.

I'm not a huge Steve fan but to be fair, I hope Steve does make the transition to TV. He deserves the chance to grow on us too.

It's already been mentioned, but it bears repeating: Move George Grande out of the TV booth and replace him with Steve Stewart. Grande is one of the more annoying sports announcers on TV today. [Remember Grande's "classic" call of Griffey's 500th HR? Grande: "...blah blah blah...HEYYY!!!...."]
Bring back Joe Nuxhall for Sunday home games. As for Stewart's replacement, it's too soon to bring Thom Brennaman back home. So the Reds will probably go with a former Reds player, i.e., Chris Welsh.

Although I hate seeing someone lose his job, the Reds made the right call. I had two problems with Stewart:

1) You couldn't tell the difference between a double play or a home run by the tone in his voice. You couldn't tell if the Reds just hit a homer or the other team did. Everything was the same.

2) He went out of his way to not offer an opinion. If player X threw the ball away, Stewart didn't say "You have to make that play, player X hurt the Reds there". He would phrase it "Tough one there, he couldn't quite get him" Stewart isn't as much of a homer as, say, George Grande, but he is a homer who doesn't give you an accurate description all the time.

He didn't fail because he was replacing Joe, he failed because he didn't bring anything to the microphone

I am sorry to hear Steve Stewart will not be rehired.
PLEASE, Do Not hire Tracy Jones!
:P
