enough about homer

Time to quit asking for Homer Bailey... unless Krivsky is lying, Bailey isn't coming here this year. In researching the column I just finished for tomorrow, I looked at a bunch of hot, young arms and how they did when promoted before their 21st birthdays. Answer: Not good, except Doc Gooden... a nice comparison to Bailey is Minnesota's all-star starter, Francisco Liriano. He'll be 23 in October... two years ago, at Bailey's age, Liriano split time between A and Double AA... last year, between AA and AAA... the twins called him up last September...he made 4 starts... he spent much minors time developing a slider and a changeup... krivsky and everyone else says that's what bailey needs to do... major league hitters can time a jumbo jet if they know it's coming... so calm down and let the kid prepare for a long, potentially great career...

Whoever told me I should watch that Bourdain guy on the Travel Channel. . . Dude sat on the kitchen floor of an Alaskan family's home and helped them eat a seal. I mean, they're all cross-legged on the vinyl floor and this seal is cut open like roadkill. Everyone is just reaching into the carcass and yanking out whatever. Rampant seal blood. I'm amazed in front of my TV. The Bourdain guy ate the seal's eyeball. I swear. Cool. I recommend it.

Today, Mike Brown and the Cincinnati Bengals, Inc. gave us 16.3 million more reasons why Mel Kiper Jr. is an idiot.

Why wouldn't you give a guy who's got that sort of stuff at least 1 shot. He hasn't faced the league yet, more of a reason to bring him up. He'd prob win more games that milton. Your an idiot daugherty. I'm glad you like getting paid to be one. It's baseball. To not give him a chance is moronic. Just saving him for a year down the road just puts him a year behind.

The reason you don't give him a shoot is because he is pretty much a one-dimensional pitcher right now and Krivsky knows it. Homer throws heat, and you can get a lot of guys out in the minors with his stuff. Not in the big leagues.

If you bring him up now and he gets shelled, you might have a head case on your hands and you have just ruined your best pitching prospect. Let him develop for another year and we'll have a stud on our hands for years to come.

It is hard for people who don't really understand baseball to get this concept, so I understand why you want to give him a shot.

I remember when the Reds brought up this young arm. He had great potentional in the Majors. Once here though, he struggled big time. Lost some confidence. Gaining it back though, but not with Cincinnati anymore. Ryan Wagner was brought up too early and is now in the Nationals' farm club. Going from Double A to the Reds, I believe, is equal to going from say Detroit a couple years ago to the Yankees. The nation saw Jeff Weaver self destruct then. Bailey is performing wonderfully in Double A. Maybe he's ready for Triple A. But let's allow him to finish developing. Luriano is going to win Rookie of the Year. Why not a Red in 2008?

Paul, next get this book:
"Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly" by Anthony Bourdain

Awesome insight into the restaurant business. Some things will amuse you. Some will disturb you. None of it is boring.

Doc- I'm the guy who mentioned "No Reservations" (Anthony Bourdain) a few weeks back, glad you liked it, somehow I just saw a fit. Sa it was picked up for a third season, but that doesn't start to January. That's Ok though, the re-runs are good even the second time around.

Agree wih previous post on the book--one key takeaway--don't order the Fish Special on Mondays.
