SI hates the Reds
Negative Sports Illustrated Reds note of the week: In analyzing which teams have the best chances of making a late summer run, SI decides, again, that the Reds miss the cut. The magazine rips The Trade and says Cincinnati has too many old players to stay close in the heat. SI thinks the Rockies will be the NL wildcard team. Uh-huh.
A local guy I know, Ray Edwards, is being interviewed by HBO's Real Sports. Edwards claims to have one of those rare Honus Wagner baseball cards. I did a story on it a few years back. At the time, Edwards couldn't get anyone of influence in the card industry to authenticate it. Now, Edwards claims he's gotten it authenticated, and will have it up for auction next month. Starting bid: $800,000. BTW, if you've never seen Real Sports, you should. It's the best, most clear-eyed look at sports currently on TV.
Shameless plug: Writing something for Saturday's paper on the 1952 Lockland Wayne HS basketball team, the first Hamilton County school to win a state title and, according to several team members, the first all-black team in the country to win an integrated state title. It's a great tale about the impact a school can have on generations of kids, on the basketball court and in the classroom. Makes you wonder how much better Cincinnati would be if we had more Lockland Waynes for our kids to attend.
To golf fans, there's nothing better than waking up and turning on the British Open. I'll be in the bunker all weekend. Live big.

I noticed that SI ripped the Reds as well as CBS Sportsline, especially in their weekly ranking where the ripped the Reds several times over.
They went on and on about how the Reds got hosed. I tend to disagree. While I love the potential that Lopez brought, he has only shown a few streaks of bright moments. At the same time, he brings a ton of errors with him. I really think that he and Clayton are the same caliber. Clayton has less speed and power, but much better defense and they both bat around .260 for their careers.
I also like Kearns and his potential, but loosing him wasn't that big of a deal. This was his fifth season and he has over 1500 at bats, yet his average is in the .260's. Not exactly the All-Star that Sportsline proclaims. Even though we loose him, we were able to give Denorfia a chance, whom I believe to have a better bat. I actually think he is an improvement in RF for the Reds now and in the long term.
Loosing Wagner was no big deal, I think he was a head case. But picking up Majewski and Bray is huge.
As for SI picking the Rockies, it just makes me laugh. I am much more concerned with the surging Altanta or maybe even Houston or Milwakee. No one from the West will win the wildcard, lets just remember that last year the NL West almost sent the first team with a losing record to the playoffs. The West is full of .500 ballclubs, no way they get the wildcard.
The Rockies?? A ha ha ha!! I mean, if you don't pick the Reds, at least pick a contender that realistically has a shot. The Braves, Brewers, and Astros come to mind. My goodness, they really blew this one.
