marvin and mike

Those who don't believe Mike Brown still has sway with personnel -- and might indeed have influenced Marvin Lewis' decision to haul in the latest crop of bad apples -- forget some of the guys MB brought in (and retained after multiple misdeeds) before Marvin arrived... the list starts with Stanley Wilson and proceeds through Reggie Rembert, Fred Childress, Tremain Mack, Carl Pickens, Corey Dillon etc. Brown has never minded bottom-feeding, if it meant getting a great talent at a reduced rate. That didnt suddenly begin when he hired Lewis... that said, the coach can put a stop to it, and should. It's his integrity on the line, not Mike's. Lewis is too good a man to have his rep dragged around like this. If he wants to do something about it, he can.

I was at the Reds game Saturday night. In 25 years of covering MLB, I have never seen a team win a game the way the Reds did. They scored twice when only one guy was able to put his bat on the ball in fair territory... walk, 2 HBs, 2Ks and Denorfia's chop to short that should have been scored an error. You have to have some luck to make the postseason. It's wins like that that make you think the Reds have karma on their side, if you believe in that sort of thing...

BTW, I went as a ticket-buying fan. Sat for $12 in Section 533, upper deck RF line... absolutely great seats for not much money

Most underrated athletic assets in town: Paul Flory and his son Bruce, who year after year run the classiest event in local sports and somehow have made Cincinnati a must stop on the men's tennis tour... now they've landed Serena Williams, who will play a 1st-round match in the women's event on Tuesday... even if you care none about tennis -- I'm not exactly a tennis nut -- you have to prop the Florys for what they do year after year. Amazing.

Without Kearns and Lopez, the weight is even heavier on Dunn to produce. We'll see. Live big, and thanks for continuing to post even as your comments have to be moderated.

Paul,

I would say that the five former Bengals you named in your post today were consummately lazy professional football players, particularly Rembert, who had a world of ability and no desire to develop it, and Childress, who simply refused to lose weight.

Character is an issue. I wish every member of the team were a Carson Palmer clone, but that's a ridiculous wish.
I also keep thinking of the middle linebacker for the 2000 Baltimore Ravens who went from murder defendant to Super Bowl MVP in eight months and who has behaved immaculately since then. Human judgments hastily made are often wrong.

I went to Sunday's game against the Rockies,my first Reds game this season, a tremendous win that convinces me the Reds will win the NL Wild Card if they sustain the focus of their play. Kudos also to Castellini or someone for straightening out the concessions mess which was a disgrace last year. There is no quicker way to honk a dad off than to give his kid six bucks for a pizza and be told the pizza is inedible. Someone has taken stock of the problems and begun to do something. Live big.

the same people who are all upset at the Bengals and the "character issues" are the same people who didnt say a thing about ryan freel and the other Reds players who were cuaght by the police for "DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE". someone please explain the double standard.

Hello, it is not just the Bengals with problems. Let me see here from the top of my head, I can list several other teams with 'bad apples':

Jake Plummer - DUI
William Green - domestic violence
Ruben Droughens - domestic violence
Santonio Homles - domestic violence
Jammal Brown - domestic violence
Ray Lewis - murder
Rae Careuth - murder, prison now
Ricky Williams - drugs, nutcase
Sean Taylor - assault
Randy Moss - assault, nutcase
Bill Romonowski - assault

plus many others that I can not think of.

Is it just me, or has the violence increased the past 10 years. Maybe it is roid rage (see Romo). The NFL has low testing standards.

Also, Keith Davis, the Cowboy LB who was shot the other day... I doubt it was a random shooting. People don't randomly shot you on the highway. Especially since it was the second time he has been 'randomly' shot.

The commish better step up the penalties before the NFL gets a thug image like the NBA.

Two takes:

I don't agree with you that Marvin's "integrity" is compromised by taking a flyer on these guys. Measure his integrity by the deeds of his foundation and the work he has done in the community. As was mentioned, do you think less of Billick because ofRay Lewis' transgressions? Marvin's job is to ask whether acquiring this player will help the Bengals win more football games. Unless things get outof hand (as they have with C Henry) I don't begrudge any of the signings Marvin has made. Look at the track record of talent they have acquired since he has been here. He is a great football coach and talent evaluator, and the best thing to happen to Cincinnati football in 15 years. What more do you want from the guy?

Secondly, love the Reds trade. The people showing much love for AK and FL have been brainwashed by the Cincinnati media's obsession with "potential." How can you not give the new GM the benefit of the doubt at this point?

summer reading: If you like the Civil War and/or are intrigued by the attitudes of southerners, try "Confederates in the Attic" by Tony Horwitz. He is a writer for the New Yorker, wrote this about 6-8 years ago and is a very readable account of his travels through the south to Civil War battlefields. Good, quick read.

Living big and still reading the Doc all the way from San Jose, CA.

Funny, the same people who want the Bengals to FIRE MARVIN LEWIS for drafting "questionable players/characters" are the same people who:
A)sold out Riverfront to see Pete "i have horrible character" Rose return to Cincinnati

B)Cheers the hustle(not character) of Ryan "2 time DUI" Freel

C)Watched Tom "thats not my joint in the ashtray" Browning inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame

D)Can you say HYPOCRITES

Good points, Bruce. I guess good hustle and public perception gets you off the hook.
What if Barry Bonds had corked his bat like Sammy Sosa? I mean, we would still be talking about that to this very day! But because Sammy "Roid" Sosa did it, it is forgotten to most.

Character issues will always be a challenge, but a coach is a teacher, and he has to believe that he can make someone grow. I would imagine that there are a lot of guys that come into the league and turn into stand up people, due to there coach. Who's to say that Chad Johnson wouldnt end up as a talentless loudmouth overated punk, if Marvin hadnt got a hold of him.

And if Marvin believes he can turn a guy like Chris Henry around into a stand up guy, wouldnt it be worth it. I believe a coach has to believe that. The only real way to rid the Bengals of Character issues is to Change the Character, other wise he's just wondering the streets with the same bad attitude.

I think the vast majority of football fans just want to see good football and couldn't care less what the player does off the field. Its a Football league, not a good character league.
