michelle wie

Maybe by the time you read this, Michelle Wie might have qualified for the US Open, but I doubt it. It's OK that she's trying, but really: Is anyone else tired of reading/hearing/seeing stories about her? I read one this morning, praising her courage. Really? She is in a can't-lose situation.

The resentment Wie faces, especially from her peers, is understandable. Before she chases her dream of playing on the PGA Tour, it'd be nice if she won something on the LPGA. As it is, she's an immense unopened package. I saw her at Shaker Run last summer, when she lost in the quarterfinals of the US Amateur Public Links, to a guy who was the 5th-best player on his BYU team. Kid was up 4 after 5 holes, and cruised. This is a player who believes she can qualify for the Open? C'mon.

I totally agree, Wie should try and master the LPGA before she tries to play with the big boys. But I also think it is one of those things where it is better to have tried and failed on a big stage than to just do good on a small stage. Bottom line: she isn't ready to play with the big boys yet, if ever.

lots of press for a golfer that has one win... yes one win. That win was also in 2003 at the US Women's Amatuer Public Links. She may well make the US Open and then we'll have two more weeks of hype and a weekend of Michelle vs. Tiger to see who is the top nike client.

I haven't heard any talk of Michelle Wie having a wie-wie, have you?

This day in age, it wouldn't surprise me.

Golf barely qualifies as a sport based upon the amount of energy expended in its play. It's something for the "oldtimers" who are too old to play anything else and have little else to occupy their time.

That being said, I think it's OK for the girl to play if she qualifies, which she did not do this year. The press makes more of a big deal about her than she does herself. If you want to blame someone, blame the press, they certainly deserve it.

Totally agree. You don't have to be that fit or athletic to play golf. Just look at John Daly or that guy who just won the memorial or all the senior citizens that play. It is a fun game, but not a real sport.

I'm just tired of hearing/reading stories about golf period, whether it has to do with Michelle Wie or not.

All that space, time, and energy should be spent on real sports.

Paul,

Golf a real sport??? Come on, yet's stop the kidding.

Yes, I have played golf - twice, it was not a workout. I used to caddy alot for duffers and close to stratch golfers alike. Most of the players now drive around in golf carts, cutting out the only decent exercise they got, i.e. walking.

Excitement?? Non-existent. Other than the stress the run of the mill player gets when they're heart starts fluttering when they blow a 4 inch putt, there is little effect on the aerobic functioning of their system. How many calories' burn when a putt is attempted? They may burn a few calories when they are flailing any at the ball with their driver or 7 iron, but the majority of the strokes for the average player is on the putting green.

I'd rather watch a root canal than a professional golf game, unless of course I got VIP passes to the sponsor's tent at a touranment.

I suggest that if they want to get a workout, they attempt curling. At least the audience can chuckle at that sport and not show "poor form."

I agree, golf is not a real sport. It is more of a drinking game. When was the last time you saw someone drinking a beer while playing basketball or football. Golf is fun, but not a real sport. Anytime a chubby guy can win a tournament, it is not a true sport.

P.S. I play golf for fun and love playing, but do not get any real exercise out of it.

Doc, I really think if another female wants to qualify for a Men's Major, it should be Natalie Gulbis. I think she would give all of the guys a very serious case of the yips. While they are all shooting mid-70's straining to get a look at her, she might be able to finish pretty high. Plus, think of the TV ratings!

Let's see. Is a relief pitcher an athlete? A kicker? They get less of a physical workout, day in and out, than a professional golfer. Seen David Wells lately? Is he an athlete? Are jockeys? Tiger Woods: Now there's a guy with no athletic ability whatsoever. Open your minds, walk 18 hilly holes in July, try to shoot less than 100. Great debate, though. Keep 'em coming.

P.D. - you are using the exceptions to the rule as the basis for your argument. Based on your logic, women tennis players are hotter than women Hollywood stars b/c of Sharapova vs. Rosie O'Donnell.

Sure, Tiger might be a better athlete than David Wells. But let's compare 90% of baseball/football/basketball/tennis/soccer/hockey players to 90% of golfers and see where the better athletes are.

There is no denying it - golf is not a real sport.

I agree with bas16. Just becuase they is an athlete that plays doesn't make it a sport.

For example, Tiger Woods likes to go out and have a few drinks at a party. Does that make drinking or partying a sport? NO. They are fun to do, but not a sport.

NASCAR racing is another so-called sport where people pass themselves off as athletes
