live or memorex?

A column I wrote Monday on Barry Bonds elicited an interesting email. I offered Bonds a backhanded compliment, suggesting that at least he was true to himself, by being a boor 24-7. The writer wondered who was worse, a guy like Bonds, or a jerk who comes off as nice when the cameras are rolling and the note pads are out. I've known a few of those: Tommy Lasorda and Jim Valvano come to mind. That's always one thing I liked about Bob Huggins. You knew where you stood w/him at any particular moment. There was no pretending.

That said, Bonds is in a category by himself. Lots of athletes dislike the media and make that plain. But Bonds seems to dislike everyone, except himself. Even Carl Pickens -- as close a local athlete to Bonds as I've dealt with -- could be engaging when he chose, even if it was rare.

On another subject: When I heard my peer and friend Richard Skinner on the radio Sunday, comparing Adam Dunn and Ichiro Suzuki, I damned near drove off the road. His point was that Dunn's OBP compared favorably w/the Seattle slap hitter's. So what? Ichiro is paid to get on base. Dunn is paid to drive in runs. The fact Dunn walks a lot when he should be hacking is nothing to praise him for. If he swung the bat instead of walking, he might have more than 203 RBI to go with his 86 HRs in the previous 2 seasons. Dunn's best spot in the Reds lineup is No. 2, after Felipe Lopez. He'll get lots of fastballs, Lopez will get lots of steal chances and close to 40 pct of the time each will be on base w/Junior or Kearns coming up.

That said, Skinner does a great job on the radio, day after day, than I could ever do. Live big.

Yes Paul,

Bob Huggins was the real deal and UC and Cincinnati are worst off with him gone.

Instead we're stuck with the most destructive, self centered president in UC's history.

UC will be better off with her gone.

Doc:

Adam Dunn will be in the American league within a year. Just a prediction.

Watching Bonds, you can't help but wonder if there are childhood issues present. That guy really seems to have a problem. Sad that someone so talented seems to live such a tortured life.

Paul,
You are way off base with Dunn. He should be taking pitches and walking when they are not pitching to him. In fact, a lot of times he goes after pitches when he shouldn't. Remember he consistently leds the league in strikeouts. I'll take Dunn on first with Kearns batting next anyday over taking his chances hacking for the fence.

Also, a couple posts back you asked "but since when has offense been a problem" for the Reds. Nice going, you sent them into a funk. Now the pitching is starting to click and you have to jinx the bats.

I must be crazy - or rare - I was never fond of the antics Carl Pickens performed for the press, or for the team, but you were right, every time I had the opportunity to meet him in public -- at a mall or a golf store (one of his favorite places) he was warm, friendly, funny, engaging. He took an interest in what others were saying to him.

This blog is my new favorite place on the web.

Interesting that LaSorda was a jerk off-camera. I can actually see how that would've been the case. Jimmy V, too? surprising.

Dunn is overrated as a complete ballplayer. Fans in this town like him (sorry) because he's white and a good-ol-boy. He's a B+ player, which is very good, but he's not the stud, all-star that people want him to be. Jim Edmonds is a great outfielder, hitter, etc. (at least he was). Dunn is just flat out BAD in the field and his impact on the rest of the lineup isn't tremendous.

Dunn's white? Wow....didn't notice. I just thought he was a pretty good ball player who also seems pretty good with the media...perhaps that's why I like him.

Doc, I love your stuff, but lose the sign-off "Live big." It's lame. Keep up the (otherwise) good work.

Same here - your stuff is great, but lose that "live big' sign off. It is over used by everyone. Try something original.

Baseball has had a number of "home-run or strikeout" giants over the years: Frank Howard,Dave Madigan, et al. Their teams were bad all the time with them in the featured power slot. Prodigous homers with the bases empty bore me when you strike out with men on.

Junior's a shadow of his old self. Dunn is a bad clutch hitter. Only Kearns shows potential as a solid RBI guy, but he's yet to put it together. This team is still missing the mandatory clutch hitter. Oh, and Tony Womack was a lifetime .280 hitter the Reds cut too soon to keep 3 catchers.

Yeah, all 29 other MLB teams are jumping at the chance to sign Womack......

Good grief.

Its Dave Magadan, not "Madigan" & he was no power hitter? "Sally" Magadan, as I called him, hit 42 homers in over 4,100 career at-bats. He didn't strike out that much either - 546.

Tony Womack is finished. Horrible on-base percentage for years & had lost some speed as well.

I'll give you the benfit of the doubt & assume your post was a joke.

Dunn is a football player, playing baseball. He hits the longball well, but doesnt catch it so good. Huggs is a fireball jerk on TV, I imagine he would have to tone it down just to live normaly, and he's terribly missed. Lasorda & Valvano...Dont care. Pickens, Yep he was hated, but you still gotta love the catch and stare on the fake time out that O'donnel pulled against the Squeelers.

and Bonds, What you see is what you get. Steroids or not...713 is still a lot of homers.

Later Al

Here's the lineup Narron should use, if he had the balls:

Lopez
Phillips
Hattieberg
Kearns
Encarncion
Griffey
Dunn
Valentin
pitcher

the first three get on base;
Kearns is by far the Reds hottest hitter this year;
Encarnacion would benefit by Griffey behind him;
Junior's days are numbered and he can't run anymore like he used to;
Dunn can't rally=kill in the seventh spot, and has less pressure;
Valentin consistently hits the ball, Larue does not yesterday notwithstanding

this lineup screams runs and versatility, but Narron is a tinkerer a la Bob Boone UGHHHH!

Womack signed a minor league deal with the Cubbies...
