somebody's gotta do it
They tell me part of the purpose of this blog is to give you some idea of what I do. Why you'd care is beyond me. Regardless, I had 5 column ideas today, and ended up writing about the Bengals winning the offseason. The other 4 didnt strike me as strong enough to keep people reading for 5 whole minutes, no easy task now. Idea 1 was John Daly's blow-off of PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem's meek suggestion that Daly get help for his major gambling problem: What if jocks in other sports did the same?
Idea 2 was how AAU basketball is neutering the high school game. Good idea, but I didnt research it as much as I needed to. Some important calls -- to coaches, parents and players -- weren't returned.
Idea 3 was Earl Woods' death and the importance of fathers in our lives. May revisit that one on Father's Day.
Idea 4 was Barry Bonds being just 2 homers back of Babe Ruth. Had a local 4th-grade class weigh in on why they liked Ruth and didnt like Bonds. Just wasn't strong enough.
Idea 5 was talking to Marvin Lewis about creating the culture of winning in the offseason. I thought that one had the biggest across the board appeal. Plus, Lewis is great to deal with one on one: Pleasant, insightful, revealing, never condescending. Nothing like his press conference persona.
I've said for years that writing the column is the easy part. Finding something you think people want to read is hard. Spent six hours today, foraging, and about 90 minutes writing.
Anyway, if you think this was at all insightful, great. I'll do it occasionally. If you really couldn't care less, I won't be offended. Sometimes, I bore me, too. Live big.

didn't bore me at all Doc... thanks for taking us through a "day in the life" so to speak. liked your other story ideas (personally, a little burned out on anything further relating to Bonds). but, i'd really like to see you follow through on the AAU story. quite honestly, it's foundation as a recruiting avenue for shoe co.s and college coaches has probably been playing out for years... but, in this day & age of message boards, blogs, and on-line recruiting sites, we've been able to learn more & more about it's real, and suspect, agenda.
How about a story on US local golf bloggers?

or, you could write about dining out at penn Station in Loveland where I sat right behind you, but did not want to interrupt your meal to tell you how much I enjoy "anything" you write!
Barry bonds rules! I just bought his rookie card!

Paul (or Doc),
Yes, more of your reflections please. I know the depth of your sensitivity and value most anything you say on any subject.
A Father's Day column on your days with your Dad at RFK in the Redskins's hey-day would be great.
Just a thought: Bengals coverage is now impossible to oversaturate.

I have to admit that I'l pass on reading anything about the Mayo traveling circus. Good to see NCH let him back in school, if he were a typical student.... bring on state title 3 and then the circus moves to another city.
I'm currently in a rut where I bore me more than usual. It's not that I lead an uneventful life, I'm just bored right now.
What do you do -- when you bore you -- to, umm, un-bore yourself?
TIA,
a fan
Well, I'd have to say you made a good choice.
Idea 1 - Just not that interesting. Just Daly being Daly. Golf is a totally different sport than other sports. Everyone is there own man, no agents, no unions, just go play ball and win. You don't have people faking injuries and going on the DL, they just man up and play.
Idea 2 - Would probably have been a decent story. But I gotta say, AAU is a TON more entertaining than HS ball.
Idea 3 - This would be an awesome story for father's day. The Earl Woods story is amazing, especially since he was such a great dad. It is sort of a shame that it took his death to really recognize his greatness.
Idea 4 - Bad idea. The Bonds thing is getting old. We should quit bashing him so much, and start in on Bud Selig. Bonds followed the rules at the time, he just had poor morals. An honestly, he wasn't the only one (McGuire, Sosa, Palmeiro, Luis Gonzalez, Giambi, Beltre, Sheffield, Gagne, B Boone) and the list goes on, not to mention the athletes in other sports. So if you want to take issue with Bonds and him taking steriods, please include the rest of the gang. If Selig weren't such a wimp, he would wipe those records clean and get on with it. Track and Field did it and so should he.
I'll gladly take your research into the AAU scene - I'd like to see whether you think it's as greasy as I do.
POLL:
Who thinks Andy Furman is an idiot?
Not me.
I think he's a skilled entertainer. Really. The man knows how to work an audience.....
Yes he is an idoit. He blabbers on and on about stuff he doesn't know about. The other night he was defending Bond, saying that we don't know whether or not he took steriods. Give me a break. I suppose he thinks Bonds was exposed to radiation that made him twice as big or perhaps he thinks that Bonds found the fountain of youth.
Bottom line, Andy doesn't do very good reseach and tries to take counter opinions simply for controversy. If you do that, then you really have to do your research.
I also think that Furman is a moron.
Agreed Furman blows
Comparing Furman to a real Sports Journalist (let's just say, Doc, since its his blog), is like comparing Jerry Springer or Bill Cunningham to a real News Reporter (a Clyde Gray or a Tom Brokaw).
Furman, Cunningham et al are Sports/news ENTERTAINERS, they take on a persona just like any actor. They are not meant to be taken seriously, just to entertain.
The scary thing is that so many people out don't seem to understand the difference. That's what makes them popular. It's a lot like pro wrestling, the entertainment is part the actual wrestlers and part the goofs who think it is real.
