big ben and small park

It took 4 surgeons 7 hours to fix Ben Roethlisberger's broken face. Yesterday morning, helmet-less Ben's motorcycle slammed into the windshield of a car in downtown Pittsburgh. His head made a six-inch hole in the glass. Thank goodness he wasnt hurt more seriously. When he heals fully -- and nothing suggests he won't -- it'll be time to start talking about how foolish and selfish he was. And to wonder why the Steelers didnt have a clause in his contract prohibiting him from riding motorcyles, or at the very least riding without a helmet. The Browns had a clause in Kellen Winslow Jr.'s deal. Every team should. Riding a motorcycle is dangerous. Riding a motorcycle without a helmet is irresponsible. Riding a motorcycle without a helmet when you are paid millions to help a football team win -- and after you've been advised against it by your coach -- is beyond dangerous and irresponsible. Here's a prayer for Big Ben. And a hope that when he returns, he makes cycle safety a priority...

Great American Small Park is rapidly becoming a joke. At least they had an excuse in Denver for balls flying out as if they were launched. What's Cincinnati's excuse? Six more homers Monday night, and it's not even summer yet. Wait until the air heats up. Personally, I get no great thrill from seeing yet another baseball leave GASP. I don't know how they fix it, beyond extending the dimensions and/or building a screen. But they need to do something. Try getting free agent pitchers to come to Cincinnati now...

I couldnt believe I saw people doing The Wave last night. What's next, 8-track tapes? Is GASP the only place fans still do that? It's embarrassing. Watch the game...

And stop throwing homerun balls back. That's almost as much of a cliche as doing The Wave.

Why can't the Reds emulate what the Phillies did with their park, and move the fences back and the walls up just a tad? They only lost 150 seats, and now they have a very respectable and beautiful park. The way people don't show up for the Reds games anyway are 150 seats really going to matter much...shame?

I agree Paul. Throwing a homerun ball back is tradition at Wrigley. I see people do it in other places as well, let the Cubs fans keep that one...It hasn't really served the team well as a good luck charm or anything else.

uhhh, paul, they are doing the wave at the world cup (i understand you only watch local wcpo) and europe is more hip than we are, right? wearing merrills is more 8track is than the wave.

I took 14 kids tot he game last Friday night and they all wanted to do the wave. They had a blast. If you don't like it don't do it.

Be careful. Communist Paul won't let you put any negative comments in his blog.

Why bother having comments when the only thing that's acceptable is comments that praise you?

And you ARE a jerk. Deleting all the comments in the world doesnt change that.

I've been to games in DC and Boston this year...both featured the wave. I went to two Yankees games and I think (not sure) both had the wave.

Don't get me wrong-I don't like it, but it isn't uncommon.

Ben was foolish and it should be told like it is. A few months from now, telling everyone how foolish he was just won't serve the same purpose. Kids will say, look he got into a bike wreck and is about to win another superbowl.

Ballparks everywhere are getting smaller. Maybe they should do it how they do softball leagues, after so many homers, everything else that goes out is an out.

Throwing the ball back is the stupidiest thing ever.

The real question is: Is the bike going to make it? That was a really sweet bike he had, I would hate to see it go to the junkyard.

Baseball is boring. Bring on the Bengals.

GABP is too small. The Reds owners at the time of deciding where to build were either trying to make a statement to the Bengals or just did not know any better.

The stadium should not have been crammed into such a tight space to begin with. There were alternative locations to build a new stadium.

As far as the wave - the people paid their money, they can do what they want. It's not that big of a deal.

I hope the fans in the outfield don't get sore arms from throwing back all of those HR balls.

I think its appropriate to call Ben foolish. I feel bad that he's hurt and I hope he recovers, but riding a motorcycle without a helment is moronic and everyone that does it is a moron. I find it interesting that in an interview last year he said he doesn't ride sport bikes because choppers and harley's are safer. What was he riding when he wrecked? A sport bike. I'm surprised the Steelers didn't put it in his contract that he couldn't ride motorcycles. I'm sure they will now and I think every sports team should put it in every contract.

Michelle Wie and her "wie wie" must have tripped up Ben's motorcycle. I'm glad Carson is smarter than Big Dumb Ben.

Walter Payton was with Carson Palmer? Oh no, Carson has gotten ahold of Henry's goods and smoke em. Payton has been dead for a couple of years.

Wow, anonymous, really, throwing homerun balls are the "stupidiest" thing you have seen? Hmm, or is it that spelling!

And what is wrong with the wave? Anyone have any other ideas what to do when you are about to fall asleep at the game!

Interesting--
There was no wait to question the foolishness of Chris Henry's latest screwups. Why wait to critique Big Ben? A double standard Mr. Daugherty?

Hi, my name is Paul Daugherty. All I know how to do is insult people and complain. Read my past columns, that's all I do...insult.

No, check that. The stupiddiest thing I have ever seen is someone calling out a misspelling or grammar of another blogger.

Paul Daugherty may be harsh sometimes, but I still like him better than the Cincy AP writer Joe Kay. That guy rips the Reds and Bengals all the time. Just look at his stories...you will notice him going against the Cincy teams all the time. I thought he would be neutral because he's just an AP guy...but I can't stand his writing.

I don't know if Ben was right or wrong. I think if you ask him now if it was worth it, he would say no.

But I hate the argument that somehow he is more irresponsible because he is a football player that makes a lot of money. He's no more irresponsible than the average Joe with family and friends who takes the same risk.

Ben is a 24 year-old football player. He isn't the President or Jesus.

They didn't have motorcycles in Jesus' time, so who knows if he would of rode one of not.

I'm a Bengals Fan and please don't speak for me anymore. The guy could have been killed. Get over the childish attitude of "this is what you get for hurting Carson". Have a freakin heart for at least 10 minutes. You are a sick FU@K if you were smiling from ear to ear because a guy got hit on his motorcycle and if you were, please don't associate yourself with "All" Bengals fans.

So, Big Ben's accident had bootsy colaco "smiling from ear to ear."

You are classless, and give Bengals fans a bad name.

Karma's a bit@h, bootsy. You've got it coming.
