Call to the post
Going to River Downs today, to play some ponies and watch the Derby... might as well burn up a couple $20s right now... I'm going to do what some women do when picking NFL games and the NCAA Tournament (sorry to be sexist, but what's true is true.) I'll bet names I like, jockeys I admire, silk colors.. you know, everything a hardcore handicapper trusts when picking winners.
Does anyone handicap races anymore? I mean, anyone who doesnt get paid for it? If I get one (legit) response here from someone who goes to the track, devours the Racing Form and actually works it, I'll be surprised. I always loved the romance of the guy in a rumpled suit and fedora, sucking a stogie and reading the Form. I also loved the idea of the Brooklyn Dodgers... and horse racing, save for three Saturdays in the spring, is about as relevant as the Bums.
Anyway, I'm picking Adriano to win, because I admire Edgar Prado for the job he did when Barbaro broke down. I like Denis of Cork to place, because I'm Irish, and Big Brown to show, because I'd like to make a little money, though with 20 horses entered and BB in PP #20, his favorite status might do him no good.
Any experts out there? Gimme your 1-2-3.

Paul,
Yes there are legions of handicappers. Here in Sarasota, the windows are busy every day with people betting races all over the country. I personally know two who go to the dog track each and every week day, to bet horses, not dogs.

When I go to the dog track I always bet a 1-3-7 trifecta box, regardless of the dogs. I've never bet on the ponies. My picks, just for fun: 1. Pyro 2. Eight Belles 3. Denis of Cork.
CSA Longshot: Cowboy Cal. But you gotta hurry.
he ran outta gas. Oh well a short thrill.

Paul, I'm just curious and by no means trying to come across as a smart guy here. Do you understand all that goes into a Racing Form and how to handicap? Has anyone ever shown you what to look for and the significance of Beyers, workouts, etc.? If not, I think you would be surprised.
Anyway, I walked away from the ponies nine years ago because horse racing injuries were and still are skyrocketting. It's been out of hand for some time and I can't stand to watch these beautiful animals destroyed. At the very least, they should do away with the whip.
Not a horse race fan, but I watch the derby every year. Have to admit that I felt a sense of sadness when she went down and had to be put down after the race. I always wonder how "horse people" talk about the horse "having heart" and wanting to win and such. How could they possibly know?
Still, it's a damned shame...Watched it with my kids. My 9 and 12 year olds were shocked and horrified by it all...They didn't get why the need to be euthanized so quickly. Not easy to explain either.
I want to compliment all of the television folks for the gentle way that the tragedy of Eight Belles was handled. Only on blurry shot of her going down, and then the ambulances forming a protective circle. Too many times such tragedies are sensationalized.
Rest in Peace lady.
