Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes

Bengals apply franchise tag to backup lineman Stacy Andrews... it buys them time to negotiate a long-term deal ... if that doesn't happen, they will pay him nearly $7.5 million this year, the average of the 5 highest-paid players at his position in the league... if no one is injured, Andrews will be the 6th lineman on his own team.

Bengals don't do this last year for E. Steinbach, a Pro Bowl alternate, similarly versatile. Bengals tag J. Smith instead, because they have no one to replace J. Smith if he leaves, unless you think Frostee Rucker is fabulous. J. Smith gets top-5 cash, even as he might not be top 5 in his own division.

Meantime, in the last 2 days the Chiefs tag Jared Allen, Ravens tag Terrell Suggs, Colts Dallas Clark... all Pro Bowl-caliber players.

Bengals overpay players because they don't have enough quality talent to replace decent players who can leave. Bengals don't have enough quality talent, in part, because they don't have a quality personnel dept., or a GM...

Props to Andrews, the beneficiary of the Bengals' forever weakness. Props to Paul Alexander, the O-line coach who has developed Andrews from a green 4th-rounder into a valuable player.

Just guessing. But adding 3-5 scouts and a GM might not cost the club much more than what it had to overpay Smith and might have to overpay Andrews.

Why do you get yourself all worked up with the bengals and GM, and scouts. Things are not going to change. Great Justin Smith is gone, he sucks, now the "real rebuilding" can be done LOL

You are rarely wrong about the Bengals, but does it matter? Will it ever change? What's the point of writing about it? Why should any of us, including you, spend any time on the subject? Why is Mike Brown worthy of a conversation? If Brown can fill seats after 17 years of inferior business practices, why would he change?

10:57, 11:42... great questions, for which I have absolutely no answers.

Answer: spend no money on the team. Period. Brown is not worth the time or effort, neither is his team. Make that place look barren like it did in 2000, '01 and '02. It's the only thing you CAN, as fans, control. I like Marvin's statement: I see better than I hear. When I SEE a true commitment to winning, I'll consider coming back. Until then, I will be content watching them from afar on TV.

You can still pull for the team without spending money. A few people do that and nothing changes. More disgruntled fans do that, who's to say it doesn't make a statement?

Paul,

I agree. You can't tell me its going to cut into MB profits that much to hire a GM and a couple more scouts. I think our scouts have done a good job on finding college talent but we need pro scouts because the Free Agents we have signed in the last 15 years have been awful. Actually I can't think of 1 that went to the pro bowl after signing with Cincy.

I couldn't agree with you more. Dropping some dough into management would not only save this team some major cash, but improve this team.
This is a classic example of why a lot of family business fail when the following generations take over. Just because you are a family member doesn't mean you are qualified to run the show.
It is a shame, because I grew up in an era when the Bengals were the team to route for if you lived in Cincinnati. But the kids growing up these days haven't experienced a consistent winner for so long that they are latching onto teams like the Colts, Cowboys and Patriots.
That being said, I like Stacey Andrews and all, but this tag should have been used on Steinbach last year. Every other team tags a Pro-Bowler in an effort to pay him a little less than market, shouldn't we be doing the same?

Hey Paul,
Talk about the Reds and you get some intelligent conversation about baseball and sports. Talk about the Bearcats and the Muskies and you will also get some good sports related conversation. Talk about the bengals... you get reemed hard in the groin with a fist of passionate anger faster than ANON 10:57 can say "CINCY MEDIA IS TERRIBLE, LISTEN TO ME!"

You also get people like myself in on the act.

Having said that, I think we will be fine next year. SuperBowl contenders? No! Playoff and Division? Yes! Things fall apart and quite frankly this team isnt going to make anyone happy even if they win the superbowl in my opinion, but just be patient and let the re-rebuilding begin (again). We need some D and O line and if Odell comesback and we build a little through the draft we will be fine. There is nothing we can do about it now anyways.

March Maddness, Spring Training, Opening Day, Jay Bruce and Brandon Phillips anyone???.............

Mike Brown should/will pay ~$2 million+ to replace himself, his daughter and his son-in-law as GM? Not in my lifetime (I'm only? 62).

You say you want a revolution?

Finally, a good post PD. Anyway, I do wonder why they let Steiny go. Was it that he allowed Kimo Van Cheapshot to break the franchise QB? This is a serious question because Justin Smith as a franchise player is a joke.

Andrews will be a starter on the line even if everyone is healthy. Whitworth became the 6th man when Willie got healthy this offseason, before this tag was used. I'm not sure why people automatically think Andrews will be a backup.

Remember, last season started with Levi, Stacy, Eric, Bobbie and Willie on the line and Whitworth as a backup...

The problem is that all the seats at PBS will be filled this year. Why does Brown care, he receives profit sharing whether he makes good decisions or not. I find it laughable that Justin Smith made the top five salary for his position and almost made the same amount as the whole NY Giants defensive line. Now the bengals are tagging a backup lineman. There are plenty of quality, starting OL free agents that you could get cheaper than tagging Andrews.

Player injuries have been arguably the biggest hurdle for the Bengals over the past 3 years. Mike Brown says the team has been "unlucky", but he can make his own luck by investing more in his training/medical staff? The Bengals list ZERO MDs with their staff. How many players have been mis-diagnosed/mis-treated and had protracted recoveries recently? Peter Warrick. Chris Perry. Willie Anderson. Ahmad Brooks. And many more, I'd wager. This is a huge problem that I don't hear the media question Brown about at all. In my opinion, the GM/Scouts issue is debatable but this is not. Any thoughts?

Totally agree Paul. Totally agree.

I also agree with jwolp. There have been some severe misdiagnosed players.

Do not invest in a team that refuses to invest itself.

Butterball -- read your column on the Pats and the whole videotape scandal. Some players/teams trying to sue them for compensation.

here is how a team with class handles it:

Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney on the Taping of Steelers Games

"We consider the tapes of our coaching staff during our games against the New England Patriots to be a non-issue. In our opinion, they had no impact on the results of those games.

The Steelers fully support the manner in which Commissioner Goodell handled the situation and the discipline that he levied against those who violated league rules.

We are confident that the Commissioner has taken appropriate action in his investigation of this matter, and will do so again if new information arises which requires further investigation and or discipline."

6:18 - Your confidence in Goodell is questionable, in my mind. He made his judgment & then promptly destroyed all the evidence?
CIA training?
Love the Rooney franchise but wonder why they stood up for Goodell.
If tape/spying didn't help Patroits, why do it?

08:43 PM (anon)

I did not express any confidence in Goodell. That sentiment was expressed by Mr. Rooney.

The main theme is how you handle diversity. The Steelers could cry over spilled milk; but choose not to. An example that some of the other team's should follow. The Pats got caught, they were penalized, now the league is taking steps to make the taping relevant -- giving the defense a miked helmets like the offense.

When we gave up Steinbach, it enabled Cleveland to build a solid offensive line and whip the Bengals early in the season and finish a great season. What oter cheap mistake will we make this year.

A big part of the cheating issue is filming the other team's sidelines to steal the signals being sent in to the defense.

The offense does not have the same issue because the quarterback has a microphone so that he can be told the plays without hand signals. Theleague has discussed giving the defensive captain a similar arrangement.

Makes me wish they would require the teams on the field to call their own plays but there would be no way to enforce it.

Interesting perspective, dog. Made me think of other EC lyrics that might apply to the Bengals. Such as "Nice girls, not ones with the defects - Silicone, shrink wrapped, so correct" being applied to Katie Brown. After all - being a Bengals fan is a life sentence of "Watching the Defectives."
